I saw a quick blurb today where FSU is planning on retiring a former player's number. I know Notre Dame does not retire numbers (A policy that I personally like), but if they did what numbers do you think would have been retired by now.

I was thinking maybe 48 for Angelo Bertelli (First Heisman winner), 82 for Leon Hart (Played during probably the greatest era in ND history and won the Heisman), and 10 for Brady Quinn (Rewrote practically ever line in the ND passing record book). George Gipp would also be an obvious choice, but I believe he played before numbers were used.

These are just a few players I could think of off the top of my head and know I'm leaving out a lot of great ones. Feel free to drop some knowledge on me.

81 Ken AcAfee would be added to those you mentioned... maybe number 50 for Chris Zorich...

I have my own personal guys I'd like to see but those two may be on anyone's list.

None. We don't have a classic player who had a unique number. Brady Quinn didn't win anything, and he wasn't even the best QB of the past decade, so I don't know why he would be on there. Joe Montana would be the only one, but there is no way to retire #3.

Too many studs to retire any number, the flavor and tradition is seeing those numbers on the field. If you started retiring numbers of the greats from Notre Dame they'd end up wearing triple digits. Where do you start?

Exactly. Michael Floyd, Darius Walker being two other great players that have worn #3.

I like that we don't retire numbers, as Notre Dame would've very little numbers to choose from if we did.

One thing that bothers me with retiring numbers in college is, take usc for example they have retired quite a few in the past decade so, 5, 11,3, are out for Bush leinart and palmer among a bunch of others in the past so you have so many players in college so sc repeats way to many numbers. Its really annoying, and we repeat a few numbers and we don't retire any.

Just to show how daunting of a challenge you have posed, of the usual 98 numbers, (1 to 99), do you know how many of those numbers have been worn by one or more Notre Dame All-Americans?

its a tradition I like about Notre Dame...not retiring numbers. Also, I think it goes against what college football is about; college ball is not associated with the end of football careers. A professional team should only retire numbers, because it signals the end of that players career. Once a player leaves college, their careers are not over, but transition to the NFL. I think retiring their college number doesnt make sense. I dont think im making my point too clear on this, I just feel that its best for Notre Dame not to retire numbers.

Not retiring numbers goes hand-in-hand with not putting names on the back of the jerseys. I think both of those traditions instill feelings that no one is bigger than the university, the team, etc.

Guys,

We are ND.

We wouldn't have any numbers left at this point... Write that down.
