To be fair, this class is still Charlie's work. Sure Kelly has to keep them all onboard, but his real first class won't be until next year.

disagree, some of these kids were close to leaving because they wanted to play for cw, not ND. bk came in and worked his mojo to keep most of the ones we had and is working major mojo to get some that nobody thought we could get. let's face it, very few of the kids nowadays don't play for history or education or THE school. they play for the coach or whoever has been winning the most nc the last few years. so for him to come in and get the kids raving about him, is exciting.

FWIW here are Scouts opinions on some top guys. Two 'experts' gave their opinions on where the Scout top 300 would end up.

Key Players on the list:

Seantrel Henderson - OSU/UF
Christian Jones - FSU/FSU
Ego Ferguson - Miami/OU
Blake Lueders - ND/ND
Matt James - ND/ND
Gio Bernard - UNC/ND
Anthony Barr - UCLA/ND
Corey Cooper - NU/NU
Josh Shirley - USC/USC (we are not even on the list of possibilities)
Dietrich Riley - USC/USC
Arie Kouandjio - Maryland/Cal (we are not even on the list of possibilities)

Well it would seem to me if we get those projected players and retained our other commits it would be a good transition recruiting class with many great ones coming down the pike!

The first expert is Allen Wallace. The second expert varies by region as Scout had their appropriate Regional Recruiting Manager make the pick for recruits in their respective areas.

If the Irish could land Lueders, James and 2 of the others (plus retaining all other commits) I would be satisfied. It would be a solid class based on star-ratings, not great, but solid.

Guys,
You all need to calm down!!! The sky is not falling and there is no reason to jump off the cliff. You are all wound up that Kelly may not be world champion recruiter like Urbie or Weis.

Here are a few things to chew on. First, ND has not performed on the field the last several years. 3-9, 7-6, 6-6 are not world beating records. Who is responsible for that?? Chuck!! Second, any time you have a change is staff there is going to be some recruiting backlash. Third, ND took a long time approving Kelly's staff because of the Oleary embarrassment.

Now, all these things are part of the past and Kelly must work beyond those. I believe that he has completely and is full steam ahead closing on our current commits and pursuing those still interested. For all those talking about de-commits. To date we really have only suffered one confirmed. That is Tony Hurd. As for Chris Martin, he was gone weeks before CW was fired. He just was not man enough to admit and then takes that pot shot at the AAA interview to say he was committed until CW left. That is an immature teenager passing the buck. We might yet lose Lueders and Gio, but it is not for a lack of Kelly's effort.

When you look at who we have committed, can you really say that you are dissapointed with the level of talent? Sure, we all want 5-star guys at every position, but reality is that ND will always struggle to recruit against the USC, UF and UT schools. Easy Academics, Sunshine, Recruiting Hotbeds, Fun Factor, Recent Success and Liberal Rules all make those schools an easy choice against ND. We will always have a smaller pool to choose from, but I am fine with that. Do you want the 31 UF arrests, UT robberies or other thug activities?

As we move into the final weeks of this recruiting cycle, let's all give Kelly our support. Remember, CW was putting together games plans for the Patroits at this point in his first year. The transition class of Weis only had about 2-3 guys who ended up being players. Look at who we have on board this year and I see several playmakers. In CW's second class which he defined as "killer", we found out it was not so killer. CW did not really bring in the playmakers until year 3, so do not crucify Kelly in a few weeks.

GO IRISH!!!

I absolutely agree with you, Jonesman. Brian Kelly knows what he's doing and who he wants to recruit. I'm taking a wait and see approach with the recruiting. We will all know more after next year's recruiting class.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly proves nimble on recruiting trail - Andy Staples - SI.com

Not sure if anyone posted this yet, but Sports Illustrated has a good article on Brian Kelly and the current recruiting season. I, for one, am very pleased that Kelly has kept the class together and added some individuals that he thinks he can mold into solid players. Given ND's recent performance in the past few seasons, I'm not surprised some recruits don't feel the "aura" of Notre Dame. These kids weren't even born when Holtz was smacking linemen with his whistle on the sidelines. For Kelly to walk into this situation and have this many people looking at us this late is a good sign and a reflection of his ability in my opinion.

For all those crying about Kelly's failings as a recruiter, I'd like to point out that some analysts are currently projecting us as the 6th ranked recruiting class in the country.

Followed the link on SportsIllustrated.com to the MaxPreps.com website. Here's the list with analysis

Top 20 college football recruiting classes - MaxPreps News

Those of you who are still fearing the impending doom of Notre Dame football as a result of hiring a guy like Kelly, please find a new team to cheer for because you're annoying everyone. Thanks.

I agree. The sky is not falling! We will pull in a good class. Remember that BK is working on keeping CW's recruits at the same time he is putting in a new system at ND. All will be well.

Scout's picks for top remaining prospects

Scout's picks for top remaining prospects

With just over a week until NSD, here are Scout's picks for the remaining uncommitted (or softly committed) players.

Scout.com: Scout 300 Commitment Tracker

To summarize ND's prospects, they feel we'll keep Lueders and we'll get Matt James, but they are split on Geovanni Bernard, with one of the writers feeling he is Carolina bound. They also believe that we will not get Seantrel Henderson (OSU or Fla), Christian Jones (FSU), Ego Ferguson (Miami or Oklahoma), Corey Cooper (Nebraska), Dietrich Riley (USC) or Hayes Pullard (UCLA).

Time to "channel" my "Inner-Annie".......

"The sun will come out, tomorrow....Bet your bottom dollar, that to-morrrrrrow.... There'll be sun."

Those a-holes don't know anymore than we do at this point. I wouldn't get all wrapped up in their nonsense as they're just feeding people crap that just need to know. Website hits and subscriptions are a big deal to these guys and they're loving all of the speculation right now. The process will play itself out soon enough.

Yeah, I'll be ecstatic if we kept Lueders and Bernard and added James, but I want one of the other players. I don't care which one of them...just one unexpected surprise!

I'd love it as well, but if not, come day 1, our boys will strap 'em up, and go punch someone in the mouth. Let's not forget the kid out of Punahao HS, Iaone....That kid has the potential to become an absolute beast.

How Good Of A Recruiter Is Brian Kelly?

How Good Of A Recruiter Is Brian Kelly?

That was my primary argument about him before the hire regarding that his lack of experience as a coach on a BCS level would negatively affect him if he were to come to a program like Notre Dame.

He brought over a staff that has followed him from GVSU through multiple stops however these guys are not used to recruiting Nationally, Alford is our only recruiter with a track record to go out of state to recruit players. I would've rather he kept Polian due to his California connection than Alford but thats how things worked out.

So before the infantry arrives to reinforce the word of Brian Kelly, the coaching change from Charlie Weis to Brian Kelly would not have negatively affected our recruiting to the point that it has. Kelly's primary recruiting responsibility has been to try to keep as much of the previous staff's commitments to remain with Notre Dame, after getting being sure of several players' motives he could focus on recruiting.

Brian Kelly's first 2 commitments came from Austin Collingsworth, the #121 ranked safety according to ESPN. Collingsworth was on Kelly's radar at Cincinatti but received a Notre Dame offer to fill a need. I've seen some of Collingsworth's ability and I think he will be solid at Notre Dame, but I dont feel he was worth a Notre Dame scholarship offer. You dont recruit players that you dont expect to ever start at your program, you should always target the most talented players and those you do expect to start.

Kelly followed up with an addition of Tate Nichols, the #101 ranked Offensive Tackle although he could project as a TE or OT in college depending on what the staff sees in him. We snagged him away from the trees. Obviously another guy that Kelly had on his radar from his time at Cincinatti and decided in order to fill a need he offered him a scholarship. To summarize this, guys who become tweeners as Tackles and Tight Ends rarely succeed in college or the NFL and they're rare in general. Some guys are naturals at either position and may have played both in High School but to grab a tweener at both positions makes his development very interesting.

During his recruitment of borderline top 100 recruits at their positions we end up losing out on our prized recruit for the 2010 class, Anthony Barr. I am not disappointed in his decision because I dont doubt his talent at all and I know he will be great anywhere. We also lose out on Giovanni Bernard, who could still remain committed but that seems unlikely at this point so close to NSD.

At this point it seems very likely that we are going to land Matt James, Danny Spond, and Jeremy Ioane. Thats solid, but not the great finishes were have been accustomed to with Charlie Weis despite sometimes losing guys on NSD. I'm just going to say that it smells a lot similar to the start of the Ty Willingham era.
