Just a thought, say a few things went differently and ND won a champiomship in 05 or 06 and we were currently a "contender" Would all this realignment talk be going on for us at ND? i have no clue, but what do you guys think?

Yes, it would. The evolution toward superconferences and a playoff is inevitable, and there won't be any room for independents in such a system.

We would certainly have more leverage if we'd won a MNC recently, but I don't think it would drastically change anything. Texas won it all in 2005, and it will still have to join one of the superconferences.

BCS is a flawed system and the only true way to get a true national champion is with a playoff. It was inevitable. Now if say Boise St or TCU or Utah were to have won the MNC then I think they would not have been so much controversy. Still though, if those teams had won I still believe these conferences would have been inevitable just from a revenue standpoint.

It won't give you a true champ, but closer.

How many times does the not best team win it all?

It's the best way of deciding a champion since it puts the best teams against each other and usually doesn't exclude any serious contender. A 4 team playoff would be perfect.

I think what he means is that single-elimination games don't always prove who is best. The best of 5/7 series that the NBA and NHL use are best for that, but obviously are not feasible for football.

I hate how a playoff diminishes the regular season if it has 8 teams or more (which I'm sure would happen eventually). IMO a "plus one" always made the most sense. You get a 4 team playoff, and the pageantry of playing in bowl games is still there. With the BCS NCG already in place, essentially no changes would have to made to the current system, except the title game field isn't set until everything else is played.
