In doing a little studying on Georgia Tech's offense last night, I'm getting more confident about our September 2nd season opener against the Jackets.

Georgia Tech Anticipated Offensive Starters

QB 1 Reggie Ball (5-11/195/SR)
FB 40 Mike Cox (6-1/245/JR)
TB 22 Tashard Choice (6-1/205/r-JR)
LT 64 Andrew Gardner (6-6/290/r-SO)
LG 61 Matt Rhodes (6-3/285/r-JR)
C 60 Kevin Tuminello (6-4/285/r-JR)
RG 73 Nate McManus (6-3/295/JR)
RT 68 Mansfield Wrotto (6-3/310/SR)
TE 80 George Cooper (6-5/260/r-SR)
WR 21 Calvin Johnson (6-4/235/JR)
WR 89 James Johnson (6-0/190/r-SO)
PK 87 Travis Bell (6-0/210/r-JR)

Note: Players in bold are players to watch; Italics are new starters.

In looking at the anticipated Georgia Tech offensive staters, one thing you quickly notice is there are only 3 seniors. That being said, eight of them were starters for Tech in 2005 so they do have significant experience on the offensive side of the ball.

There are, however, several question marks for this Jacket squad. The most notable issue is the right tackle spot where Mansfield Wrotto, a three year starter on the defensive line, is now taking over the position. While most of the summer works I've read said he looks good, Wrotto could be a potential weakness that we can exploit. The Tech line only allowed 10 sacks last year, lowest in the ACC.

The second questionmark is at tailback, where Tashard Choice replaces PJ Daniels, who was an All-ACC 2nd Teamer. Choice did get about 120 carries last season gaining almost 550 yards, so he isn't exactly green. However, it will be interesting to see how he fares when he is the featured back in the Tech offense.

Third, and what could be very important if it's close is the GT kicking game. Travis Bell went from being a Freshman All-American to being a dog, only connecting on 11 of 21 attempts. The Jackets aren't sure which kicker they'll be getting this year and hopefully if it comes down to it, it's the latter.

Lastly, as many know, the GT receiving corps is lead by one of the best in the nation, Calvin Johnson. Beyond him, however, everyone is a virtual unknowns. In 2005, Johnson had 54 catches which accounted for over 25% of the receiver production. His sidekick in 2005, Damarius Bilbo (40 catches) graduated leaving him with James Johnson (r-SO), who had only 14 catches in 2005. Additionaly, starting TE George Cooper only had 8 grabs on the season... that's 22 catches between the other starting wideouts.

What we do know is Tech does have the talent. However, aside from a couple kids, most of it is unproven. Ultimately the game will revolve around senior QB Reggie Ball, who is a shorter version of Aaron Brooks. Both mobile and strong armed, Ball sometimes looks brilliant and at other times makes absolutely terrible decisions.

In 2005, Georgia Tech went 7-5 with key victories over Auburn (23-14), Clemson (10-9), and Miami (14-10). Their losses came to Virginia Tech (51-7), NC State (17-14), Virginia (27-17) and Georgia (14-7). They finished up their 2005 campaign with a 38-10 loss to Utah in the Emerald Bowl.

Calvin Johnson is the best in the country...hands down at his position, he should keep our secondary busy.

Great breakdown. It's all about containing Reggie Ball and getting to him before he can get the ball off to Johnson. Not to mention keeping Ball in the pocket.

With that line, it may very hard to do that. Let's hope we have some defensive trickery up our sleeves. Obviously we double Johnson and then match a LB to shadow Ball. I think we have to force incoming starter Choice to beat us.

This is going to be one tough road game

Reggie Ball will likely have a lot of time to throw the ball, and what pressure we do get, he will be able to elude, (see Troy Smith fiesta Bowl), Calvin Johnson with that kind of time will find some wide open territory, and Choice is a damn talented RB.

Hopefully we will be able to get a lot of pressue on him some how

Well, the positive to that is Ball is not terrible accurate on his throws. In fact, I believe he has more career interceptions then touchdowns.

Career 50% passer with 37 TDs and 41 Ints. And over the course of his career his numbers a flat. If hasn't improved in the first three years chances are he won't improve in his senior. He is statistically unimpressive even with his running taken into account. If you factor sacks into the equation more than half the time GT calls a pass play it ends in failure. ND can contain Johnson.

GT is in for a long night.

One more tidbit. Apparently incoming freshman RB Jamaal Evans (5-8/200/4.4) has had an awesome spring and could push Choice for the starting nod. If he doesn't catch him, expect to see him on the field because he is a potential gamebreaker for Tech.

Andrew Gardner is a great left tackle. He will play on Sundays in The League.

Agreed. Anytime you're an All-American offensive lineman as a sophomore, you know you've got it.

GT Offense is only two key things as mentioned above...Johnson and Ball.

ND has to be all over Johnson constantly, if they run on us so be it, we can't be giving up the big play to Johnson, Double/Triple Teams

Linebackers have to Spy on Ball like a Hawk. We slow those 2 elements down and with our offense we will jump out to a couple scores as I am not convinced by that GT secondary. I just don't want to get into a slugfest with GT.

Well, this matchup looks eerily similar to last year's opener against Pitt. Ball and Johnson are very comparable to Palko and Lee and we had similar concerns matching up against them.

Ball's ability to run makes me think of what happened in the Fiesta Bowl... with Johnson playing the role of Ginn... let's all hope that I am wrong with my concerns.

It could be somewhere in the middle of the Pitt opener and Stanford regular season finale.

The result could be somewhere in the middle of those games....

Similar...except GT won't be in the throws of a new coaching change...

True, but Gailey is definitely on the hot seat this year.

Georgia Tech Preseason Offensive Accolades

Calvin Johnson, the junior from Tyrone, Ga., is on the cover of numerous preseason magazines, from Lindy's to Athlon to The Sporting News. He is a consensus choice as ACC Offensive Player of the Year and is a first or second-team all-America by virtually every publication.

Sophomore offensive tackle Andrew Gardner, a freshman all-America last fall, is a second-team all-ACC choice by Lindy's, Athlon and The Sporting News, which rated him the No. 17 offensive tackle in the nation.

Junior Mike Cox was rated the No. 6 fullback in the nation and the best blocking back in the ACC by The Sporting News.

It could be I'm just getting anxious, but I am really worried about this game... more so than the Penn St and or Mich games... a loss to GT could spell doom to the season and possibly recruiting momentum if we drop this game AND one or two of the first four outside of this game as well... which could certainly happen if GT pulls off the upset

Yes, a loss to GT would be devastating. I refuse to believe it's possible.

Just to update:

WR Calvin Johnson was said to have injured his leg in practice but it is just a minor injury.
FB Mike Cox also hurt himself and may miss the Notre Dame game.

tweaked a Hammy did he? anything that affects his performance is absolutely huge for us.

The loss of their FB could result in even more passing by GT

More injury news for Tech:

Starting senior right tackle Mansfield Wrotto left the scrimmage with a left foot or ankle injury. He was replaced by redshirt sophomore A.J. Smith, who also has worked at backing up left tackle Andrew Gardner.

Among the players out injured were starting right guard Nate McManus, his backup, Jacob Lonowski (shoulder), starting fullback Mike Cox (shoulder), reserve wide receiver Xavier McGuire (ankle), starting cornerback Jahidi Word-Daniels (right leg) and reserve defensive end Michael Johnson, who'd been in both practices Friday.

"[Word-Daniels, who was replaced by Avery Roberson], the jury's still out," Gailey said. "Dr. [Xerogeanes] was here today to look at him. Lonowski may be a little bit longer than McManus."

Like Reggie Ball not being able to get him the football.

Won't matter if Johnson slept at a Holiday Inn Express the night before, if Ball is inconsistent or getting pressured, all of Johnson's skills won't really matter.

To me, Reggie Ball holds the game in his hands.

I agree. I'm hoping with the new found speed on defense that Mr. Ball doesn't have much time to looks for Cal.

Well, I for one like it. Bring 'em on full strength, mano e mano.
Not only is this game important from a win/loss perspective, but it'll provide Charlie a good barometer of just what the hell he's got.

Wide receiver Smith to see a lot of action

Douglass High graduate Greg Smith hasn't unseated senior Chris Dunlap for the No. 3 wide receiver spot, but he'll play plenty.

"Calvin [Johnson], James Johnson and Chris Dunlap, they're my top three, but Greg Smith, he'll play a lot at different positions," said wide receivers coach Buddy Geis. "I feel good about those four right now. They'll rotate a lot."

It won't take an injury to someone else for Smith to get on the field. "He's going to play," Geis said. "He's too valuable to me. He has the size I like. He's a 6-3, 200-pound redshirt freshman that I like a lot."

Evans likely to spell Choice and Grant

Gailey said he'd usually use two tailbacks in a tight game, but freshman Jamaal Evans is likely to play against Notre Dame — and not just on special teams.

The coach said, "I bet if the heat's what it is, he'll get a series or two" in place of starter Tashard Choice and backup Rashaun Grant.
