Open it up. Hendrix vs. Golson for next year. Hendrix looked like Tim Tebow last night, but with a better arm IMHO. Everrett's highlight tape reminds me of Troy Smith. Two promising young athletes who can really help this offense explode.

With any luck we'll snag a couple of those big recruits at the skill positions (i.e. Keith & Nelson) and see some sparks fly.

That depends on the drive you are going on. Kelly put Rees in and Rees did enough not to lose the starting job....... until last night. As much as I have defended Rees, I was on the live chat, calling for Rees to be benched at halftime. Ask anyone who was there. Rees was completely ineffective yesterday. For the first time this season. He's had rough games, but he never looked completely lost and ineffective, until last night. So he got benched. Pay attention next year; if Hendrix gets the starting nod, and has a couple of rough games? Some of the same people who are singing his praises right now will be screaming for Golson, and calling Kelly an idiot for not going to Golson earlier.

Despite Rees' ineffectiveness last night, the kid has shown a ton of guts and character over the last two seasons. He hasn't always been great, but he's never been horrible for more than one series in a row. People should have more class, and be more thankful for having Tommy around.

That about nails it.

I would rep you but I need to spread the love around first.

yes, along with paul faila

Faila was only 2-0.
Plus had Fail right in his name.
I figured that next one that could be comparable was Kiel but he started games all 4 years on campus.
(By the way Gunner just saying there is precedent for Kiel family members to step on campus and contribute right away.)

Honestly I could care less who the starter is.
Hendrix brings a new dimension to the offense that we are trying to run.
Tommy is what he is.
He'll be a career back up in the Kerry Collins mold. Who if I recall had a pretty good career at pedie state u and the NFL.

That's just not true.

How does an offense featuring Michael Floyd, Tyler Eifert, Cierre Wood, Jonas Gray, et al score 15 points against Pitt and 16 points against BC? Fyi, every team except NC State scored more against BC, and every one of Pitt's opponents scored more than the Irish did except for Lousiville (who scored 14) -- that means even Buffalo and Maine managed more offensive production against Pitt than the Rees-led Irish offense did.

I have absolutely nothing personal against Tommy Rees. I admire the kid for the way he performed during the 2010 season. However, it's been blatantly obvious for some time that he's not the guy to lead this team to a national championship. And if he can't do that, then what's the point?

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph......... I'm not sure if you are aware of it, but we BEAT both Pitt AND BC. If you are going to lay the offensive production completely in his lap, then you have to give him credit for the wins. The fact that you don't like how much he won by is immaterial to the fact that he wasn't horrible. He WON the games!!!

He wouldn't have won either game if the defense gave up 17 points.

If a pitcher gives up 7 runs, but his team scores 8 and he gets the win, does that mean he didn't have a poor performance?

Oh, and the credit for the offensive production in the Pitt victory goes to Jonas Gray. The "12-3" crowd does a disservice to every other player on the Notre Dame football roster when they constantly talk about "Rees' wins".

Lastly, I never said Tommy Rees is a horrible player or that he routinely performed horribly. All I'm saying is that, given the talent surrounding him on offense, his production has not been consistently good enough.

I know it's fashionable to pile on Tommy Rees and all. However the kid has been productive and accurate the whole time he's been here.

Tommy probably is not going to start next year but I give him credit for what he did do for us which is provide some stability until we could move on to a different qb whether that is hendrix or Golson. Tommy really is not BCS quality qb and I'm guessing when he came to Notre Dame he was not planning on starting his freshman or sophomore years. He sadly was the best option kelly had this year but by not playing the end of the stanford game kelly once again opened up the competition... I'm guessing Golson will get a decent amount of first team reps along with hendrix and rees during bowl prep.. Hendrix will probably start... but I believe that this will be an open competition but mostly between Golson and hendrix

SOON TO BE 13-2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your cocky replies about Tommy Rees are ridiculous. He will never beat an elite team. Great kid but he has the talent of Central Michigan QB. THE TOMMY TRAIN HAS CRASHED AND BURNED!!!!

Here Comes The Hendrix Train!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's a great kid but incapable of beating an elite team

"Sophomore quarterback Tommy Rees is on pace to record the second-best single-season completion percentage rate in ND history (minimum 100 attempts). Rees is at .672. Jimmy Clausen (2009) holds the record at .680."

Name One big win he's led us to? if you say last year usc. he had 5 yes thats five turnovers. you're a joke

And he turns the ball over during crunchtime. People forget the little things that hurt teams.

Fact is, Hendrix came in and scored twice and turned the ball over once. Averaged 8 yards per attempt and looked nice running the ball. Rees did not score and turned the ball over twice. Averaged 4.6 yards per attempt and played scared in the pocket. All this talk about how Rees is a gamer and the first game he takes a couple good hits, he is afraid to stick in the pocket and follow through with a throw. I was done with him when he missed Riddick on a simple pass that shouldve scored.

Personally, I think it should be a battle with Hendrix and Golson for this offense to evolve. We don't need a game manager, we need a game changer.

With respect, there is a huge discrepancy in the sample size. Armando Allen was 1 for 1 in passing in 2010, so by this reasoning he was our best QB that year.

The most popular guy on every roster is the backup QB.

Rees didn't play well against Stanford. However he got destroyed on the first play of the game. I think he receivers far too much hate for being nothing but productive.

going to be an even more wide open race this spring with coach kelly seeing the benefits of having a running QB on the field.

imo it is completely wide open, especially if Gunner enters the mix and i see hendrix winning out as of now, but things can certainly change.

I could see Golson winning because he's a better passer but bringing Hendrix in on 3rd and short to be that battering ram.

I don't ever remember calling for Crist when Clausen was playing.

Err, the guy hasn't played full service all year long. He also ran out of pressure situations, which Tommy couldn't. Your argument is moot.

Gunner Kiel has no chance whatsoever to start next year.

I remember a lot of people were wondering whether he was going to take over Jimmy's starting job prior to the 2009 season.

It would be a great pleasure if everyone would pause for breath for a while and, especially quit crapping on an "OK" football player who did a lot of service for our team this season and last, and should get more uniform thank you's for that.

And everyone should relax also in the knowledge that Kelly, although basically a good person, is pretty ruthless when it comes to whom will play for him vs who will sit the bench. He will do what he says as far as I have seen, and what he says [even at the post-game presscon] was that he's evaluating everything. That will absolutely take place in the Spring with Andrew having the whole playbook and Everett as well. If they are even close to Tommy's competency at pre-snap understanding and adjustments, they will [one of them] be handed the keys.Nothing trumps "the best chance to win the game" with Coach.

I assume that Hendrix and hopefully Golson WILL be football smart enough to succeed Tommy at the vital position. Whoever gets it will make mistakes. It will also be a pleasure if the Board shuts it's collective mouth for several games and gives the kid a honeymoon. The amount of cheap-shotting done on our players by our noisy negativists is appalling. No one is all bad. These are young people [if I knew for sure that these crap comments never got back to them or their families, I wouldn't care, but who really believes that we speak in a vacuum?]. They deserve better treatment from us who don't even play the game.

P.S. Thank you Tommy and Bless you for your really hard work and will to compete under very difficult circumstances. I will always honor your effort just as i have other ND QBs who were dealt a less-than-perfect hand and still went out there and gave all they had for us.

And he turns the ball over during crunchtime.

Really? He had quite a few turnovers that were his fault, this year. And a couple of them came at key points in the game.

But I also remember him being money in a couple of crunch times:

Against Michigan, on ND's 61 yard drive to take the lead with :30 seconds left:

Tommy was 3/4 for 46 yards (the other 15 yards came on a pass interference call) and a touchdown.

Against Pitt, in the fourth quarter, on ND's 85 yard game winning drive:

Rees was 8/8 for 71 yards and a touchdown.
