It turns out that Weis never contacted Brian Smith, Walker, or Gray about decommitting from their respective schools. They all called initially to see if the offer was still good, or if ND still had interest. At that point, Weis told them that if they were interested in ND, they needed to notify the coaches of their respective programs about it, and they would go from there.

Nice to know that Weis can still keep his integrity and recruit great classes. Guys like (Oscar)Meyer(Weiner) could learn a thing or two from him.

I personally dont have a problem with teams recruiting a verbal commit. It comes down to the player if they want to keep their word or not.

Wow - if this is true then it is remarkable. I don't have a problem with calling other teams' recruits, but it seems that honesty and openness should be paramount throughout the process.

Not entirely true...he is being a bit disengenuous. Weis DID give Smith an offer LONG after he committed to Iowa. Smith did not call him once he committed. Smith contacted Weis once he had an offer in hand.

Here is what Weis said, (I probably shouldn't even post it here. It's a premium article. Simply put, Weis says that Smith was the one who initiated contact with him, and then Weis was open with brian and actually was the one who told Brian that he would need to call Ferentz before making the visit.

I don't know all of the history before this took place. But I do know that this is much more respectable than some other recruiting practices, IMO.

do you have a link to any of this stuff? that's great if it's entirely true, but the way recruiting is now a days, i'd be suprised if ND (whether it was weis or an assistant) didn't contact some of these guys first.

I believe all of this is coming from Tim Prister's exclusive interview with CW, which is premium stuff and can not be linked. Hopefully it will be de-classified by the end of the week.

I've read the article, I have also read what Smith has said...and I have read other articles.

I love Weis, but I am pretty sure he is not telling the whole truth here.

Smith has stated that as soon as he got his "late offer" he called Weis. IN FACT, Weis made offers to other publicly committed players. Brian Bulaga committed to Iowa about 10 months ago and Weis offered him well after he committed.

I personally don't think that Weis considers making an offer "contact". Because it is clear he was making offers to athletes who were already committed and were not calling at the time.

Please, don't post premium content here on IrishEnvy. It's caused no small amount of trouble in the past, and I'm none too eager to see a repeat.

Thank you.
