Depends on the severity, but rest and Ice are first. Ice after any activity (15 min on/off/etc...) and heat or warmup before activity. Popular term is R.I.C.E, (rest, ice, compress, elevate) but it is kind of difficult to compress and elevate the groin.

Pulled groin is terrible. Don't expect to do any full out running for at least 3 weeks.

No more than 15 minutes at a time with the ice.

Just a random site, but says the same thing you will find almost anywhere (Orthopedics, Sprains and Strains - HowTos

# Get the ice on quickly.
Icing is most effective in the immediate period following an injury. The effect of icing diminishes significantly after about 48 hours.

# Perform an "ice massage."
Apply ice directly to the injury. Move the ice frequently, not allowing it to sit in one spot.

# Don't forget to elevate.
Keep the injured body part elevated above the heart while icing -- this will further help reduce swelling.

# Watch the clock.
Ice for 15-20 minutes, but never longer. You can cause further damage to the tissues, including frostbite, by icing for too long.

# Allow time between treatments.
Allow area to warm for at least 45 minutes or an hour before beginning the icing routine again.

Another danger, believe it or don't believe it, is overstretching. I know of a coach who made his athletes do a slow jog for about at least 10 minutes, just to heat things up, before they even thought about stretching. Coach never used partner stretching and never forced the muscle beyond slight tension. His last 4 years coaching, ZERO pulled muscles, and this was in 4 different sports, two of which he was the head coach (high school level). The results his teams teams produced (zero to hero), caused him to be accused of cheating. lol.

If you're still up, take some ibuprofen. In fact, if you ever tear a muscle get some first thing - it helps reduce the amount of swelling, which often times is causing the pain.

I prefer the Oxycodone method. Barring that the sucking lead through 52 gauge shotgun straw is something to contemplate.

Second Neutered's warning about excess stretching. Western Michigan's basketball teams began slow-movement jogs and warm-ups, then VERY "soft" stretching pre-games several years ago. I can't remember many groins, hams, or other pulls there....and for sure zero on the girl's team that I helped a bit with. Whenever there was an "assisted" stretch it was so minimalist that fans wondered why they were doing it at all [not understanding the idea].

For Terry: now that the deed is done, it's just Neutered's care formula, and a lot of patient rest, unless you want to go for science-fiction bionic parts replacement.

I have excedrin body and back extra strength, heat therapy patches, and a reusable cold compress. We're managing.

First, make sure you have a very sharp blade. Preferably a serrated one that can cut through bone. Next, apply alcohol to gauze pad and wipe over area between thigh and knee. The higher the better, though you don’t want to get too close to your equipment. Then, tie a very tight piece of tee shirt (use your own, you’ll look tougher) around the highest point that you want to cut into. After that, down a bottle of the stiffest liquor you can find, Everclear should work fine, and begin the process of regretting the decision of playing in that pickup game with other guys too old to be playing hoops. Begin to saw in strong, downward driving motions, until you are cleanly through the leg. Apply the heated muffler of a supped up bike to cauterize the wound. Get back in the game.

You have solved your hamstring problem. I can help you out with any bicep injury as well.

Would work great if it were his hamstring and not his groin. hahahah
