1. Defense, defense, defense...
When you play good defense, good things happen. The D didn't play particularly well today, but they did finally make some plays (especially on 3rd down). It helped, that Pitt's QB is almost really bad. He made some terrible throws, all day long.

2. Penalties, penalties, penalties....
The Irish almost spit the bit, with untimely penalties. They weren't terrible, but those same penalties against a good team probably would have cost us the game.

3. Theo Riddick...
Kid looks like he might end up being an excellent WR. He's already pretty good, in just his 6th game at the position.

4. Kyle Rudolph...
Something is definitely wrong with Rudolph. Of course, Kelly's passing game isn't exactly real imaginitive when it comes to using the TE. I hope he expands that, and soon.

5. John Goodman...
Is it me, or does it seem like every catch Goodman makes, he is moving either backwards or sideways. I'm not sure if these are the only routes he can get open on, or if maybe Crist can't make the throws, or if that is just the routes that Kelly is asking him to run, but it's getting kind of annoying. The guy is supposed to have some wheels, how about trying to get the ball to him, while he is headed downfield?

6. Dayne Crist...
A good QB, but not great. He still seems to throw every ball with the same velocity, whether it is a screen pass or a deep out. He looks like he could develop into an outstanding QB, though.

7. Armando Allen...
Still running hard, getting the tough two or three yards. He is a completely different back than he was, two years ago. We saw some flashes of it, last year, and he is showing it every week, this year. Most improved player on this team, in my opinion.

8. David Ruffer...
Congrats to Ruffer! I finally don't have a coronary, every time we attempt a field goal.

All in all, a very solid effort by all three phases of the team. I still think that the D could be playing much better. Pitt marched down the field, and into the Red Zone, on 4 of their first 5 possessions I think it was. They did make some plays in the Red Zone, but the best defenses make those plays BEFORE the ball gets into the Red Zone.

Mostly I'm happy that, when I roll into town for the Western Michigan game next weekend, we will be on a two game winning streak. I'm hoping that the mood on campus will be festive, perhaps even electric.

9. Ben Turk on the fg holds, and his Punts have been awesome, putting the Pitt O in a bad spot.

Seriously? The guy is averaging about 36 yards a punt. And I would not be surprised to learn that he was averaging 10 yards of roll, per punt. His punting stinks!

One thing that we as fans might do is look to all our mistakes and disregard the other team completely. I stated clearly in the game day thread that I thought Pitt had a great offensive game plan. They probably would have scored more points against anyone today.

Regarding AA, I have said since I first signed onto this site that the guy is dynamite. He was simply a victim of an atrocious running scheme. The guy is hell on wheels, and I'm glad others are finally starting to recognize it.

Player vs Position
Obviously we've seen some "weak position playing" not my view. You have to have nothing but an amazing attitude when you see players like Shembo, Jackson and especially Motta play today. Some of these young guys might have not have played flawlessly in previous games but to see their effort this game during special teams....you have to realize their potential, heart and future on tis team. I think we grew leaps and bounds this game, Armondo running, Theo (almost Tate like) and finally stretching the field to Floyd. I couldn't be happier and expect next game to be better, with out the dropped passes and penalties!

An atrocious running scheme didn't cause him to go down every time someone breathed on him.

I agree with everything you have said except the part about painting a negative picture of the defense. The defense kept a top twenty five rushing team to less than 110 yards! Two of the best backs (statistically, over nine yards per) were at 4.8 and 5.5 respectively. And we only gave up two big plays. When is the last time that happened?

If you take out the long one Slaughter bit on, Pitt only had about 200 passing yards! It was a little rough, like the offense. But the special teams were awesome, as you stated!

How did he net more than he averaged? Did they run backwards?

Yup...totally agree. watch the guy move...he's learned how to be shifty an deliver a blow and get positive yards every time...

For the season...I am with you...however did you see the stats for this game? And did you see the hold of the 50 yarder?

The way i see it is, Wood reminds me of Allen. In the sense that Wood shows flashes and everyone expects him to be a big game breaker. Same type of expectations put on Allen.

But as we all see Wood is going through growing pains, but he has the luxury to have veterans that are capable of running the ball strong.

Allen never had a veteran to show him the ropes, or a veteran that could come in to let Allen sit.

So while it sucked to watch Allen have to grow up, we all had to and it made Allen look like he just goes down by "breathing" on him but he was going through his growing pains.

I tend to think Allen was going through CW's growing pains. I recognized Allen's spark from the start. And I still don't like his chances with this spread offense. He is willing his way for all his yards.

The defense was very solid against a very good running team today. Could have played better in the passing defense but we focused on shutting down the run.

Definitely another game where the defense played better than the offense. We went LONG stretches of time without doing jack **** on offense.

Totally disagree that Sunseri played terrible too. He's a first year starter just like Crist and he threw for 272.

Lack of killer instinct.

Whether by design, or the boys just get bored, we need to start putting these teams to sleep, and add a roofie or 2 to make sure it happens. ND doesn't get into FG range at the end of the game and suddenly Pitt has 1:30 with 3 timeouts, needing a TD for the WIN. These close calls shouldn't be.

Rudolph would have had a TD if Crist didn't overthrow him. Crist had a pretty average game again. He missed Floyd wide open in the endzone twice. It's not good.

I guess I'll have to wait all year before this board uniformly gives the defense the credit it deserves. I thought those guys were terrific today. Pitt probably played as good an offensive game as it could, given the fact that Sunseri looks like he's finally settling down emotionally and just throwing the ball [he did have a few mental moments of insanity but not like he's been doing]. Yet even with Pitt pretty functional, we, with the exception of one brain-lock by Slaughter, really made it difficult on them. I say hurrah to Ian Williams and his up-front gang---even his soul-mates at DE had some stops today. Our linebackers were hard-working and competent---the power run game of Pitt is difficult to be spectacular against with their thug-like robocop fullback making life tough on LBs as lead blocker. The corners were terrific, and the much-hated Harrison Smith played a fine solid game. [An emotion that I do not share by the way--I think the guy's doing fine this year]. Zeke Motta comes off the bench and slobberknocks a few guys. I'm wondering what-the-hell anyone wants from these folks. They are really limiting the opponents. Do we think those other guys are children? And their coaches idiots? All praise Ian and his mighty hoard who don't get credit nor game balls.

Lack of killer instinct...

Well, can you specify a single athlete or coach that does not have the killer instinct? Seems to me there is a large difference between killer instinct, blown plays, and mistakes. I think this team is busting its ***.

We made it difficult in the Red Zone, I agree. But Pitt was in ND's Red Zone on 5 of 11 possessions for the game. That's not great defense. No one has said that the defense played poorly. But neither are most people willing to say that they played great. Because allowing the opponent into your Red Zone, 5 out of 11 times, is NOT great. Saying that defense is not great is not the same as saying that they are terrible. There is alot of grey area, in between.
