I'm aware, but forever is a long time. If someone saves my life, I'm going reward them for it, but I'm not at their mercy for the rest of my life. I got shit to do, lol.
While I understand that in playing Navy giving up yards is "understandable" but they scored more points on us than they did against Temple, Texas State, Rutgers, W. Kentucky, Air Force, and twice as much (14) as they did against OSU. Like from the OFD article above, the defense has been very average for a few games now. Thats long enough for it to become a trend. Yes, this is a young team and yes they will make mistakes but if the goal is the playoffs this D has a long way to go. I wasn't going to say anything after UNC and the second half of FSU but 6 yards per play is inexcusable.
From personal observation, overall, there were both good kicks and bad kicks made in this game. The direction ND was going in the fourth quarter was into the wind. The wind, at times, was so bad that it was shaking the goal posts. There's no doubt in my mind that Kyle could have made both field goal attempts, however these were drives that the team needed to score on. Kyle pulled the first and bad blocking led to the second. Overall, the weather was not as much of a factor as I think it could have been. I think it certainly contributed to some poor kickoffs and possibly Riggs' fumble, but this was not Stanford-type special teams weather issues. I think the problems in this game were the same ones that have been constant for the past few weeks--inconsistent blocking, inopportune fumbles, etc..
So the game might have been frustrating and 39 points is a lot to give up, but was it really that bad? Notre Dame allowed the third fewest rushing yards (336) and third fewest yards per carry (5.60) by a Navy opponent this season. Both numbers were less than what Ohio State gave up (370 yards at 5.87 per carry). Of course, 5.60 yards per carry is almost an entire yard more than what ND gave up last year (4.73).
But the Irish also forced a turnover, got a 4th down stop, and forced several punts. The defense did what they needed to do early in the game to let the offense close the door.
We also saw a willingness to try different things on defense and make adjustments. In my preview I stressed the importance of keeping things simple, but I thought BVG did a good job of mixing things up. The defense got some stops at the beginning and the end of the game but the 24 point run let Navy back in the game.
I thought VanGorder did fine in his first game against the option in 12 years. Take away Golson's ill-timed interception and this is probably a much different game.
