Just a couple thoughts on the offense and why I think it has struggled under Kelly no matter who the QB has been:
- No identity. What does this offense want to do well and hang its hat on? I don't think anyone can answer that almost half way through Kelly's third year. It's like the offense has a different look each week and is constantly trying to adjust to what the defense is doing instead of things being the other way around. It's a reaction offense, not an attacking offense. The offense has talent, but without any clear direction that talent becomes irrelevant and in my opinion that is what we have seen thus far.
- The offense does not feature anybody. Instead of playing everybody, why not just let the best players play and try to build some consistency on this offense? To me it makes no sense and is doing no favors for a young QB trying to get on the same page with the skill players on offense. Getting everybody playing time during a game is great for recruiting and bad for trying to build consistency. Every WR on the roster has played this year and multiple RB's have seen time. For instance, Goodman has a tremendous TD catch one week, and does not see the field the next week. It's just madness. To me I do not think there is any question that some guys (Wood, Daniels) have clearly shown they need to stay on the field unless they are injured or need a rest. It's time to leave guys who have proven they can make a play in the game and cut down on playing time for some others. Give Golston a core group that he can get comfortable with instead of trying to get his timing down with everyone.
Until this offense finds an identity and starts playing the better players consistently, I suspect we will continue to see more of the same garbled mess on offense.
