Of course, ND shoulda been back at the top spot in at least one of the polls at the end of the season. Yeah, I'm bitter.

The press had pre-ordained Bowden w/ a NC before the year even started...and they made damn sure he got it...all of it.

Yeah if there was EVER a year for a split title that was it... how do the 1 and 2 teams play and the 2 team beats 1... they finish with the same exact record and number 1 remains number 1???

My theory has always been that the pollsters expected Bowden to retire soon, in 1993, and voted him the NC as a "Lifetime Achievement" Award. Who'd thunk he'd still be standing on the sidelines 14 years later?

From my recollection, that was the night we had an impromptu pep rally to celebrate the lighting of the #1 atop Flanner. I know Aaron Taylor was there, and a few other players as well. Was a sweet couple of days... "What, there's another game before our rematch with Matt Friar and the Creminoles?!!!"

I was in Diego Garcia, keeping the free world safe from Communism by "killing" every drop of alcohol I could find. All the while, cursing AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Televison Service) for showing one college football game a week. By the time we returned to Hawaii, the season was pretty much over, and I had hardly explored the island (Oahu) at all, so that season was basically a "pass" for me.

I have my doubts that even that would have done it. Pure and simple, there were a lot of pollsters who just wanted to give it to Bobby Bowden.

I still have my t-shirt from when ND beat the noles celebrating the victory. Its packed away in a drawer after I tried wearing it all through highschool even though I got it when I was 11. It was my lucky t-shirt I would wear under my pads for games. Who needs underarmour, just wear a shirt that is clearly too small for you, I needed to make cuts in the armpits though, couldn't quite move my arms all that well without them.

And hey, if we are giving out money, I am incredibly poor, my bet on ND over Air Force didn't quite work out as well as I had hoped it would.

That was a great birthday gift, I think I still have a VHS tape of the game somewhere. The next week... not so much. When has a head-to-head matchup meant so little?
