Notre Dame's True Class

So I was one of the lucky few to see in person the 43 year old streak end. By the end of the first overtime, the crowd was insanely exhausted from cheering their hearts out on every 3rd and 4th down...you can only guess how we felt at the end of the game.

But what I want to bring up is what happened after the game ended. Of course the entire crowd went silent, but then the Irish players walked to midfield to meet the Navy players and shoot hands. Then both teams went to the far corner of the stadium to stand in silence for the Navy alma mater. The crowd actually clapped at the end of the song. The players then walked all the way across the field--still both teams, together--and did the same for the ND alma mater.

Besides being awestruck at the finish of the game, this gesture on the part of both teams left me literally speechless. It made me proud to be a part of a school, first as a student, then as a fan, who would show so much respect for a team that just beat them for the first time in 44 years. Instead of throwing their helmets, tearing their jerseys, and sprinting into the locker room, the players showed amazing class.

That's great. My family has a bunch of Marines in it. Losing stinks but losing to a service academy while we are at war took a little of the sting out of losing to A SERVICE ACADEMY. if that makes any sense?

glad the team showed such respect.

I think we should show them much respect, but it doesn't make the loss any easier for me. In fact, because it's a team that we own, it makes it harder.

your a genius. have you seen our recruiting classes under weis?

I hate to point out the elephant in the room here, but.....yes I have....on the field......and I'm not terribly impressed.

I'm all for giving trolls a ribbing, but at least keep it honest/realistic in doing so.

Southie,

Not that it diminishes the classiness of it in any way, but this is done after every game between Navy and ND. ND and Navy have a long, strong tradition. My older brother just finished up his tour as the Executive Officer of the Naval ROTC Battalion at ND. There are NUMEROUS ND grads in the Navy and Marine Corps. At one point, ND graduated more Naval and Marine Corps officers than any other ROTC program.

Kmoose, was this done under Ty? I was there, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't. I also don't remember the Navy guys coming over with us any of the times we beat them.

Let me dig back into the archives to see if I can find a time that Navy came over with our team for our Alma Mater......digging....digging....(this might take a while).....oh wait....nevermind......it happened the last time we played them.

Seems like Navy just started reciprocating with the '06 game. In '05 it was such a big deal that we went over to the Navy band and fans, it seemed like a bit of a surprise to them. Perhaps they did not know how to react. Can anyone validate that?

Hmm, I see. Well, since 1. It only happened once, 2. it wasn't a home game, and 3. I only watched it on TV, guess I didn't see that part. Note that I simply said I didn't remember it happening, not that it didn't happen. Please, be a jerk more :).

I'll point out that my main point of this being only a recent phenomena under CW stands.

Well, considering "any of the times we beat them" consists of the last 43 years (among many others,) if your "main point" was that it only happened under [NAME REDACTED] then it was poorly conveyed.

I think it started under Holtz. I obviously can't say for certain that it has been done every year, but it's not a new thing.

I think the rest of us understood you meant under Weis.
