Does anyone know why the interlocking ND's were removed from the uniforms last year?

Will we ever see the green jerseys again?

Dont' know about the interlocking ND, but the green jerseys should ONLY be used sparingly and only for special occasions. That was their original intention and if we start wearing them regularly and lose in them (as we did w/ Boob Davie and against BC in 2002), then that cheapens their mystique.

yeah, green jerseys should be brought out only in special games. ill asmit when ty brought them out in 2002, it fired me up. i figured that would be enough motivation for the players to stomp the guts out of bc, but we all know what happened instead.

After that loss to BC with them I don't think we should ever see them again. They ruined the aura around those jerseys

Would the change in uniform providers have anything to do with the design? I know when they switched from Champion to Adidas and the look changed as well.

Yeah it seems lately they always lose when they have the green jerseys out. and its against what other wise would be considered above average teams.

I think they should reserve the Greens for some top ten teams (especially USC Michigan ) and BCS bowls not for BC or Geaorgia Tech.

I often wonder if ND will put anything in the middle of the field or on their helmets? Does any1 know if they have ever considered that

I don't think there was ever really a mystique to the green jerseys. If I remember correctly, Devine switched to them in the late 70s and wore them straight-through for several seasons. Faust switched back to blue for religious reasons, he wanted the gold and blue to recall the Virgin's garments.

But the official color of the jerseys was also green when we sucked in the 50s under both Kuharich and Devore (we also had big green shamrocks on the helmets back then). We have lost in those jerseys throughout the school's history. When Rockne or Leahy wore green, it was because we were playing schools like Navy that otherwise wore the same colors (I don't think anybody wore white in those days).

Likewise, the color blue has oscillated from a true Madonna pale blue to the near-black of Holtz. The sleeve design also changes every few years. I believe the ND went on the jersey during the Holtz years, and I believe Holtz was also the one who took the names off of the jerseys. Likewise, I believe they switched to numbers on the sleeves last year just to help the announcers in identifying the correct players.

Also, ND apparently had helmet awards in the 70s too, but they were sparse. Blue stars were applied to the fronts of helmets like military insignia.

Oh, how I hate helmet awards...

All those are interesting facts but these days the uniform provider has more say in what the uniforms look like. It used to be the coach had alot of the say because alot of the uniforms were bought at a local vendor OR each team had their own prvider.
These days Adidas and Nike and Champion all have a certaing uniform format that they put out. And the school has to choose among those formats or styles. If you notice alot of the teams endorsed by Adidas pretty much have the same design just different colors or an extra stripe to seperate them.
Just like everything elst these days money decides every thing. Its easier for Adidas to sell "authentic replicas" when they are all pretty much made the same.

Yeah I agree the helmets should be left alone. Sprayed gold every friday night is an awesome tridition.

i am one who thinks that the jerseys are somewhat "sacred" i know it sounds wierd...but there are just somethings that never should be changed, let alone touched..

1. Gold Helmet (must always be 24K gold) no stickers
2. Names should never be on the jersey
3. Green jerseys should only be in championship game, only against USC
4. No logo on field, or endzone...

there are more..just can't think of any at the moment...i am really supersticious when it comes to things like that

i dont think nd should ever get helmet stickers or logos. in my opinion, we have the most distinctive helmets in football. well we did, until navy switched from dark blue helmets to gold.

But-near as I can tell-points 1, 2, and 3 are revisionist histories. I think ND was even one of the last teams to wear leather helmets.

you are wrong. parseghian busted them out in '66 versus purdue; the team warmed up in blue then switched just prior to kickoff. the place went apeshit, and the irish, obviously, won. they were around pre-devine.

however, once they went to the greens full-time for a few seasons i think they lost their magical powers.

I said they were around pre-Devine!

Hence, my point: Kuharich fielded green-clad teams. With bad helmets and giant shamrocks.

And I know for a fact Devore lost to Syracuse in 1963 in the last game of the season in green shirts, having gone 2-7 for the year.

1921: Although Gold and Blue have always been and still are the Notre Dame school colors, green football jerseys were first used in a game against Iowa in 1921 when Knute Rockne, realizing that Iowa's dark jerseys would make it difficult to distinguish between the players, ordered the green worn. The switch wasn't lucky for the Irish, as they were upset by the Iowan's 10-7. The green remined with our team as an alternate color through the years, popping up occasionally as a surprise, as in Dan Devine's ploy against Southern Cal in 1977.

God willing, we will never see those damn green jerseys again! They barely ever help, going all the way back to that Iowa game.

Sorry, but I LOVE the green jerseys, mystique or no mystique, win or loss. I simply feel there is something powerful when they wear them, but it must be done on occasion.

I think we all need to stop being superstitious and just enjoy a change in pace and the tradition and mystique when and if they wear the green jerseys.

Lou did bring the interlocking ND to the sleeves and removed the last names. Last years numbers on the sleeves version was also seen back in the 70's.
