If you didn't notice, Clausen didn't throw one deep bomb all game. Every single play an intermediate route over the middle.

The days of the excessive deep balls are over, I would think.

Now, it's basically pick your poison.

We can bomb it on the weaker teams. We wouldn't have got away with it today and we certainly wouldn't be pulling that shit against USC.

Washington was playing a whole lot of cover2 which takes away the deep ball. The problem with the cover 2 is that the middle is open. The Irish reallt took advantage of this

With 422 yards passing, we found what worked without the deep ball it seems. I also noticed the lack of the homerun tries, but when you have 67, and 77 yard passes, something is still working.

JC on at least 2 different occaisons looked for the deep 'bomb' but it wasn't there, so he hit his check down.

It's still, and should always be there. He's just a much better QB and will take what the D is giving him.

It's plainly obvious that he isn't locking on receivers anymore either. I had my doubts and thought that Quinn was just outstanding at ND, but I have to give credit to Weis on his QB development. Clausen is an outstanding QB and leader, and I will be thrilled to have him here one more year.

i think there secondary is in the top ten coach said at half time that the middle was all they were giving us so they gave us lemons and we asked for salt and tequila

It seems Weis made a conscience effort to try to get Tate all over the field and get him the ball in open space. As Tate has been progressing as a WR, he's showing that he is dangerous catching the ball anywhere on the field. This will make things easier for everyone else because he is certainly being double covered and in the case of Rudolph's long completion down the middle, he took three defenders with him.

In my opinion losing Floyd for the season may end up being a blessing in disguise, because with Floyd and Tate opposite each other the Irish would've just thrown the ball deep and against the lesser teams you can be one dimensional and win games, but as the case in the two BCS games, good teams can take away what you do best and you have to rely on other means to move the ball. If Floyd doesn't get hurt, I don't see Weis moving Tate all over the field, rb's catching balls down field or the Wildcat being used as much.

Charlie calls what works, if the bombs were open Jimmy would hit it. Instead he threw to his checkdown.

Great play calling agian by Weis. He was moving Tate all over and Rudolph was a beast again

(was anyone else sick of hearing Pat Haden and his Where's Waldo reference? That shit was annoying)

That was getting kind of annoying, but what was really bothering me was the camera guy kept showing their D coordinator with his big bald head and that mad look on his face, pace back and forth on the sidelines for like 5 min.

Hey! Don't blame the camera operator, blame one of the directors in the truck for not calling for, and calling up, other shots for broadcast. Picky, picky, picky I know, but the camera folk only shoot what they are assigned or directed to shoot. I've been on both ends of the headset ... but not at an ND football game, gosh darn it all.

Though working a game would mean not being able to actually watch the game.

If you watch the game again... once they broke the five yard box, DBs gave us quite a bit of cushion while the LBs played a softer middle zone. Lots of open passing lanes if given time.

Hopefully we get similar opportunities against USC.

Jimmy is defintely showing growth in taking what they will give us. I think we have these short pass options open all the time JC just needs to take advantage of them and stay patient. This eoll bring the D in and allow for the deep ball. I thknk we need to get Shaq the ball over the middle. I think he is who CW will be looking to to step in for Floyd. I would love to see more 3 step wuick slants. These can turn into big yards if hit in stride and JC has the accuracy to pull it off.
