I’m not saying Sampson would leave on his own accord. I think the athletic is in some big trouble. I think they could be cutting a lot of positions.
The Athletic is owned by the New York Times. They may not be rolling in cash like the early days, but they’re relatively stable. And they employ SO MANY journalists. I suspect they’ll employ one to cover Notre Dame football for a long time to come.

Where's he going to go?

He's a Notre Dame beat guy, has been his whole career, and he's no kid. If you want to write good smart stories, as he does, (and not just chase recruiting scoops) it is the best job covering Notre Dame, in large part because they don't just "churn out content," as you put it. The other would maybe be the South Bend Tribune, but I'm sure The Athletic pays better. Did the SBT even replace Hansen and Tyler James?

And from The Athletic's perspective, Notre Dame has got to be one of the ten programs that drive the most readership for them. Maybe top five. Yes they dropped their Va. Tech beat guy but as long as they have beat reporters, they'll have one covering Notre Dame. And Sampson is the best around.
Pete would go back to II surely. He's practically still apart of the team (kind of surprised NYT allows his level of contribution to II)

Wait. What is the hot news here? A recruit is decommitting or a reporter? Or both?

The actual situation was Waffle decommitting. It was the same day as the Thomas commitment so it got lost in the shuffle.

Backstory is some fans think it's a big loss for a kid who committed early and recruited hard. It's a big deal for a kid committed to ND to be processed out. Other fans hear scuttlebutt about him taking secret trips to Michigan so he's persona non grata and thus not a big deal.

Sampson would not be the guy I’d see getting fired. What about the first guy you mentioned instead?

It’s a run-on joke on here. That Singer waits for Prister or especially Loy to post an update.

Nothing to see here.

Driskell's lapdog, Ryan Roberts, had another cheap shot at LSU on IB's Friday Mailbag. More or less, just a jab at which coaches LSU would have on its "Mt. Rushmore of football coaches." I love it. Truthfully, the parochial, spiteful, bitchily behavior that derives from IB keeps me coming back. Well done, Mt. Driskell.

You lost me at calling Ryan Roberts a “lapdog.”

Well, if you notice, he never disagrees with BD, ever. The topic doesn’t matter (if you listen, IB’s mailbag shows have a pretty broad scope of topics), Roberts always agrees / affirms BD’s takes.

ETA: They get a little too “geeky” in their player and recruiting analysis, but it’s still a good show with largely quality content, though. My point was just that BD rarely ever gives LSU any credit, and it appears to me to be more than just BK.

Brian *loses his mind* when his own paying customers disagree with him, so I can't imagine what it's like to work for him.

Touché. For no real reason, I always get a good laugh at his responses concerning food.

For instance, Brian apparently enjoys a nice a Boar's Head roast beef sandwich.

Brian also apparently loves a nice Boar's Head oven roasted turkey sandwich.

I always envision Brian pulling a Costanza when saying it:

Speaking of lapdog…now that Ryan Roberts has a newborn at home, he is taking time off & Vince DeDario is doing podcasts again with Driskell.
Vince is HORRIBLE and brings absolutely nothing to any conversation.
As soon as I see or hear he is on, I just turn it off.
Vince, last season, was still saying Jordan Johnson should have been playing right away & BK was clueless. Vince has no idea they Johnson, in 2 seasons at UCF, has zero catches for zero yards & zero Touchdowns, while having multiple DNP’s, despite being healthy & the UCF side says he has an attitude & effort problem. Vince just says stupid shit with no clue. But he will kiss Driskell’s ass every two seconds. He’s a fan with no knowledge and a failed HS position coach, yet thinks he knows more than ND coaches.

I’m curious how that is going to go with OV’s coming up. Roberts will have to come back for that.

Vince seems like a really nice guy, but he's tough to listen to.

He’s a super nice guy. But so is my dad.
And neither know shit about football.

I’ve heard Vince over the years going back to his time at BGI.
He & Bryan met a dozen years ago at a ND game & are neighbors. So Driskell got him a job at BGI, in which he did nothing. Then when Driskell started IB he brought him & made him an “analyst” because Driskell was the “editor,” but Vince didn’t analyze anything, Driskell always did.
Vince, going back to the beginning, will believe & echo EVERYTHING Driskell says.
As soon as Driskell started basking BK, Vince was doing it. As soon as Bryan complained about any player or assistant coach, Vince was doing it.
He is worthless & just says whatever Driskell wants him to say.

I get the mild sense that Vince is intimidated by Driskell.

There is a difference in his comfortability and openness to disagree when he’s doing a show with Sean Stires, as opposed to Big Driskell.

Ryan Roberts is great. It’s too bad he works with Driskell. Anytime you see Roberts sort of veer down a different path with an opinion, Driskell somewhat shuts it down. Or he gives off some defensive vibes.

Isn't Vince a HS Baseball coach now?

Yep.
He was a freshmen football coach, who coached WRs on JV & was the “passing game coordinator” for the varsity…aka, made up position to stand on the sideline.
Listen to his “breakdowns” of receiver play & it only takes a second to realize he knows nothing. My favorite is, “I can teach Merriweather to run a go route. Just have him do that 5 times a game & throw him the ball…”
Yeah, a P5 DC won’t figure that out…

Watch when there is mailbag question about a play, and Driskell will tell Vince to go ahead & answer it, and Vince will bumble through it & say nothing, then Driskell will just jump in & answer it, and Vince will just nod his head & say, “yep, exactly.”
Roberts will give us thoughts & it seems Driskell actually respects it. What’s funny is when Roberts is sarcastic or messses with Driskell, you can see Driskell really, in real life, gets annoyed, butthurt, upset, about it.

Dear God, this! 😂 His tone and demeanor quickly changes over a little poke. You can tell he hates being challenged and holds himself out to be the smartest guy in the room

Had absolutely no idea Staples was jacked up. I bunched all those Athletic writers into the nerd/IPA drinkin category.

He used to weigh like 300 lbs then he went on a health kick. For a while there he was basically college football diners and dives eating all the unhealthy food college towns provide

Not going to lie really going to miss him at the athletic. His podcasts were getting really good. Thought he and ari were annoying at first, but they really covered all of the things going on in college football.

I believe Staples was a walk-on/scout team guy for a year or two at Florida. Agree he's one of the best out there. Sounds like he's staying in the business just going to a different publication or something.
