Wow. So our starting lineup goes:

School all time 3 point leader
School all time leading scorer
One of a handful of players in school history with a triple double
First 3 time conference defensive player of the year
and then Jessica Shepherd who would probably have some record if she hadn't played two years elsewhere.

It really is a treat to get to watch this team play.

ESPN talking heads raved about balance of ND offense ... and Jackie Young. Praised Rico's scoring, Mabs Treys, Bri's D, but gushed over Jackie's all around play.

Creme, as noted here several days ago, says Greensboro IS the Battle for Chicago. Winner will go to Chitown.

IF State beats UL AND ND, ND will probably still go to CHI - CREME.

JUST WIN!

The whole location thing makes no sense and Creme’s explanation of it all hasn’t helped. Apparently they try to send teams closest to their campus because they will have an easier time filling seats? I’m all for filling the stadium, but this shouldn’t mean royally fucking teams in the meantime. UCONN will basically always be in the Albany region with this logic. Notre Dame beat Louisville, has the #1 RPI, and #1 SOS. Notre Dame should already be projected to Chicago, not UL.

The fourth #1 seed should have to travel the furthest from home. That’s pretty simple, but the NCAA prioritizes attendance more than regular season success.

IRISH TOP ORANGE 91-66 TO ADVANCE TO 6TH STRAIGHT TITLE GAME
March 09, 2019

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Jackie Young had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 4 Notre Dame advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game by routing No. 18 Syracuse 91-66 on Saturday in a semifinal.

Jessica Shepard added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Marina Mabrey finished with 16 points to help the top-seeded Fighting Irish (29-3) reach their ninth straight conference final -- a run that includes all six years of their membership in the ACC.

Tiana Mangakahia scored 14 points and Gabrielle Cooper added 12 to lead fifth-seeded Syracuse (24-8). A day after making an ACC Tournament-record 14 3-pointers in a quarterfinal upset of No. 15 Miami, the live-by-the-3 Orange were 8 of 23 from long range against the ACC's best 3-point defense.

Mangakahia pulled Syracuse to 55-44 with a layup with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third, but the Irish put the game away by scoring 13 straight points, with Young's three-point play with 1:59 left in the period stretching the lead into the 20s for good.

Brianna Turner had 14 points for Notre Dame while Arike Ogunbowale, the ACC's leading scorer, added 12 points on 5-of-18 shooting.

Muffet McGraw
Jessica Shepard
Marina Mabrey
Notre Dame

Notre Dame - 91, Syracuse - 66

THE MODERATOR: We're joined by Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw and
student-athletes Marina Mabrey and Jessica Shepard. Coach, an opening statement.

COACH MCGRAW: I thought we got our transition game going. I thought the second half defensively we played a little bit better. They were probably a little bit tired from the third game they had to play. But I thought we executed really well in the second half. Really proud of Marina Mabrey and her accomplishment of being the all-time leading 3-point shooter in Notre Dame basketball history. And excited to be still playing. Looking forward to tomorrow.

THE MODERATOR: Questions?

Q. You started off the game, like, with 4:45 left in the first quarter, it was 13-13. And then you guys ended with an 18-6 run at the end of the first quarter. So go ahead and talk about what made you guys go ahead and really have that dominant run.

COACH MCGRAW: We were able to get some stops, which is always key in getting the run. We got some rebounds, which is another key. And then I thought we got the break going. We got some easy shots. And then we made some pretty good jumpers. But I
thought Jackie Young took the ball off their press and was able to do a really good job of getting to the rim.

Q. Coach, you kind of had, I guess, an opportunity to coach what I call the splash sisters in Notre Dame with Michaela and Marina, and Marina becoming the 3-pointers leaders today. It's not that often you see two sisters be that successful in the same program. And could you talk about that?

COACH MCGRAW: It was a blessing for me to be able to coach both of them. They're very different personalities and very different players. But it was great to have Marina as a freshman when Michaela was a senior because she was a little bit like the mom
out there. And I thought she did a really good job taking care of her and showing her the way. Marina brings a different perspective to the game in terms of how feisty she is and how competitive she is, where Michaela was someone who was always the
encourager trying to keep everybody together. They made a great combination when they were on the floor. They really knew where each other was going to be. But it's really been a joy being able to coach both of them.

Q. You said a week ago that you thought you guys were peaking at the right time. I'm curious, a week later, two more games in, playing for hardware tomorrow, where you think you're at in the big picture sense?

COACH MCGRAW: I think we're in a really good place. I like what we're doing on offense. I think that's the easy part right now. We struggled a little bit defensively in the first half of this game as well as yesterday. So I'd like to see that tighten up a little bit.
But offensively we're definitely where we need to be.

Q. Marina, I was curious, did you know on the floor where you stood vis-a-vis the record and when you let that one go?

MARINA MABREY: Yeah, I knew. Just like a lot of people have been telling me from, like, our media staff and stuff. So it was really nice to have great teammates who passed me the ball in the right spots. But really I'm just worried about getting our ACC trophy back.

Q. If you could both answer this, Coach has talked about -- we know how good your offense is; that's just a consistent thing with Notre Dame. But Coach has talked about wanting defense to be better. Could you just address that? Do you feel it's progressively gotten better, and how has that happened?

MARINA MABREY: I think it starts with our focus, just sometimes coming out, thinking we're going to outscore people. I think we really need to lock in and want to defend and kind of have that competitiveness and pride in our defense. We plan to bring that
tomorrow.

JESSICA SHEPARD: We talk about just giving a little more, and I think on the defensive side of things is where we need to give a little more and like Marina said, just come in focused.

Q. You have five players that scored in the double digits today. Just talk about how well-balanced your team is and how important that is moving to the NCAA Tournament.

COACH MCGRAW: It's been great for us all year to have five players average double figures. I don't think a lot of teams in the country have that kind of firepower on offense. Any one of them could have 30 on any given night. So it's a great chemistry that we have that nobody tries to do too much. And we're sharing the ball really well.
I'm interested in seeing the bench scoring improve. That's what I'm looking for, seeing one person -- I think Abby Prohaska has definitely taken a step up. She's shooting some 3s. Dani Patterson gave us really good minutes. And I know Mikayla Vaughn's capable, too. So I'd like to really see that bench come along.

Q. I was just wondering, what do you think the chance is this year that we will see rematches with the ACC in the NCAA Tournament with how strong the ACC is this year?

COACH MCGRAW: I think that the ACC is obviously the best conference RPI-wise, but we definitely think we're the best conference. We've got so many great teams, looking at taking at least eight to the NCAA Tournament, which is probably more than everybody else. We had more teams than anyone else last year, with two teams making it to the Final Four. And I think definitely we have the ability to do that again this year.
Looking forward to seeing where everybody's placed in the bracket, because so much depends on where you go. And we have so much talent in this league. I hope we show well in the NCAA Tournament.

THE MODERATOR: Thank you.

#4 Irish Advance to Sixth Straight ACC Tournament Title Game
Marina Mabrey becomes Notre Dame's all-time made threes record holder

GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the sixth consecutive year, the Notre Dame women's basketball will be competing for the ACC Tournament title. The top-seeded Irish knocked off fifth-seeded Syracuse, 91-66, in Saturday's first semifinal matchup.

Notre Dame will now challenge second-seeded Louisville in Sunday's championship bout set for Noon ET on ESPN2.

"I thought we got our transition game going. I thought defensively in the second half we got a little bit better. Syracuse was probably a little tired from the third game they had to play but i thought we executed really well in the second half," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "Really proud of Marina Mabrey in her accomplishment of becoming the all-time three-point shooting record holder in Notre Dame history."

With a 4-for-9 shooting performance from beyond the arc, Marina Mabrey became the program's all-time leader in made three-pointers with 263, surpassing Alicia Ratay (262). Mabrey finished with 16 points.

For the seventh time this season, Jessica Shepard and Jackie Young recorded double-doubles together. Shepard tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds while Young finished with 18 points and a season high tying 13 boards.

Lastly, all five starters ended in double figures for the 12th time this year as Brianna Turner poured in 14 points, followed by 12 points from Arike Ogunbowale.

How It Happened
Syracuse jumped out to a 13-9 lead at the 6:08 mark behind a 3-for-3 start from three-point range. However, the Irish went on to outscore the Orange 22-8 for the rest of the quarter, receiving points from six different players including a big three from Abby Prohaska. All-in-all, Syracuse went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc in the quarter but Notre Dame's offense pushed ahead 31-21.

After 52 combined points in the first, it was a defensive battle in the second. The Irish edged ahead 13-10, ending the half on a 8-2 scoring stretch for a 44-31 halftime lead. Both Young and Shepard reached double digits with 10 points each.

The Irish used an early 7-0 run in the third to garner a 20-point lead at 53-33, but Syracuse countered with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 55-44 at the 4:40 mark. Yet, Notre Dame answered with a game-changing 15-2 scoring spurt to end the quarter, building a 70-46 advantage. Both Shepard (16 pts / 12 reb) and Young (15 pts / 10 reb) had double-doubles by the end of the third, while all five starters were in double figures already.

Notre Dame tacked on 21 more points in the fourth, turning to its bench for the final 3:30 of the game. Mabrey's record breaking three came at the 4:20 mark in the fourth.

Notes
  • Irish move to 16-1 all-time in ACC Tournament play.
  • Notre Dame moves to 34-2 all-time vs Syracuse with a 2-0 mark in conference tournament play.
  • With four three-pointers today, Marina Mabrey becomes Notre Dame's all-time made threes record holder. She surpassed Alicia Ratay (262) and now boasts 263 in her career.

  • Shepard notched her 13th double-double on the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She tallied 15 with the Irish last season.
  • Young earned her ninth double-double on the year, which continues to break the single season record for a guard at Notre Dame. Young tallied 18 points and a season high tying 13 boards on Saturday.
  • Young's 14 career double-doubles ranks second all-time at Notre Dame by a guard and sits three back from the record holder Lindsay Schrader.
  • Turner is 44-of-56 from the field over the last seven games -- she has made 78.6 percent of her shots in that span.
  • Young has now dished out an impressive 37 assists over the last four games.
