No. 25 Miami upsets No. 4 Notre Dame women, 72-65
9:09 PM CT
Associated Press

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- University of Miami students stormed the court when the final buzzer sounded, and above the resulting swarm stretched the long arms of Hurricanes players as they traded high-fives.

The reason for the excitement Thursday: a 72-65 victory over No. 4 Notre Dame. Miami has never beaten a higher-ranked team.

Emese Hof and Beatrice Mompremier had double-doubles for the No. 25-ranked Hurricanes, who slowed the pace to stall Notre Dame's feared transition game. The Fighting Irish were held to a season-low point total and shot 37 percent, also a season low.

Hof had 21 points and 13 rebounds. Mompremier added 18 points and 12 rebounds for her 18th double-double, the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

"We were excited. We were determined," Hof said. "We were up a lot of the time, so we kind of felt like, `OK we got this. We got this.' We really believed in each other."

And when the students rushed onto the court to join the postgame celebration?

"I was just like, `Oh, wait.' I had no idea what was going on," Hof said with a giggle. "They were very happy for us. It was a great turnout and helps us a lot."

The win was reminiscent of the Hurricanes' victory four years ago over a Notre Dame team that was also ranked No. 4. Miami (20-5, 8-2 ACC) had never before beaten a defending national championship team.

"We've got the first one now," Mompremier said.

The Fighting Irish (21-3, 8-2) fell a game behind league leader Louisville. They also lost to unranked North Carolina.

"I wasn't happy with anything," coach Muffett McGraw said. "We didn't execute. We couldn't do anything right."

Jessica Shepard led Notre Dame with 17 points and 17 rebounds but was in tears afterward.

"The other team wanted it more than us," Shepard said. "That's not acceptable."

Notre Dame's Marina Mabrey shot only 5 for 13 and scored 14 points, ending her streak of three consecutive games with at least 20. Arike Ogunbowale scored 13 points, eight under her average, and shot 4 for 15.

The Hurricanes limited Notre Dame to 11 fast-break points. They contained the Fighting Irish's transition game by committing just 11 turnovers and often running down the shot clock.

"I know the crowd was `9-8-7," coach Katie Meier said. "But that's how you beat Notre Dame. We were finding open shots at the end of the shot clock."

There were 14 lead changes before Taylor Mason's 3-pointer put the Hurricanes ahead to stay 43-41 midway through the third quarter. Notre Dame cut the margin to two points three times in the final period but could get no closer.

Mason's bank shot with 43 seconds left made it 67-63, and teammate Mykea Gray sealed the victory with a pair of free throws.

SUPER SUB

Mason, a sophomore guard, scored a career-high 13 points off the bench. She came into the 4 for 24 on 3-pointers and made 2 of 3.

MISFIRING

The Fighting Irish shot 22 for 59, including 3 for 14 beyond the arc. They came into the game shooting 52 percent, best in the nation.

Miami won despite shooting just 39 percent, including 3 for 16 from 3-point range.

INJURY REPORT

Mikayla Vaughn, who hyperextended her knee in Notre Dame's last game, played seven minutes and scored two points.

BIG PICTURE

Miami improved to 5-19 all-time against Notre Dame.

UP NEXT

Notre Dame plays host Sunday to No. 24 Florida State, which beat No. 9 North Carolina State 75-70.

The Hurricanes play Sunday at Pittsburgh, which lost to Georgia Tech 67-55.

#4 Irish Fall to #25 Miami, 72-65, in Final Minutes
Shepard records 17-point, 17-rebound, double-double

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 4 Notre Dame women's basketball team battled with No. 25 Miami in a game that featured 14 lead changes and six ties. The Irish (21-3, 8-2) cut a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to two points with 1:16 remaining but couldn't edge past the Hurricanes (20-5, 8-2), suffering a 72-65 defeat.

"We lost the game because we couldn't contain the ball," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "They beat us to the basket. It cost us the game, same as it did at North Carolina. We've got to find a way to figure out what we can do on defense."

Jessica Shepard led the Irish with 17 points and 17 rebounds, her eighth double-double on the year. Marina Mabrey (14 points), Jackie Young (14 points) and Arike Ogunbowale (13 points) also finished in double figures.

How It Happened
Mabrey scored seven of the team's first nine points to jumpstart the Irish offense. In addition, Notre Dame notched six of its first 15 points off of second-chance baskets. Both sides converted nine field goals in the period, which was ended by a buzzer-beating Mabrey three to tie the game at 22-all.

The second quarter was a defensive grind for both sides as Miami edged Notre Dame in scoring 14-12 to take a 36-34 halftime lead. The Irish were limited to 4-of-14 shooting in the period with three of the field goals occurring under the 3:30 mark. A pair of Jessica Shepard free throws gave the Irish a 34-33 advantage but then it was Miami's turn to beat the buzzer, claiming its narrow two-point lead at the half.

In the third, Notre Dame countered by holding Miami to without a field goal from 9:47 to 5:11. In the majority of that span, the Irish produced a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead at 41-40. However, a pair of three-pointers from Miami's Taylor Mason put the Hurricanes back on top, 48-42, at the 3:24 mark. The Irish battled back before the end of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 54-52 heading into the fourth.

Later down 65-58 with 2:35 left in the game, the Irish recorded back-to-back steals in which they converted into five points, cutting the deficit to a one-possession game with 1:16 remaining. Next, with the shot clock winding down, Miami's Mason delivered a floater off the backboard, while on the ensuing possession, Ogunbowale's three-point attempt didn't hit the mark.

Mabrey connected on a pair of free throws to cut it to 69-65 with 19 seconds remaining, but Miami remained in front by staying sharp on the free-throw line to bring it to the 72-65 final.

Up Next
The Irish return home on Sunday, Feb. 10, to host the annual tradition known as Pink Zone. Notre Dame welcomes in No. 24 Florida State for a noon tip off on ESPN. The Irish encourage all fans to wear pink in honor of the breast cancer survivors in attendance.

Notre Dame loss returns UConn to a No. 1 seed in bracketology

Charlie Creme
ESPN.com

Notre Dame held onto a No. 1 seed despite its loss to North Carolina. The Fighting Irish are not so fortunate after Thursday's loss to Miami.

The Hurricanes held the Irish's normally proficient offense in check in a 72-65 win. Even with Notre Dame's Jackie Young in the lineup -- the versatile junior missed the game against the Tar Heels -- the Irish hit season lows for point total and shooting percentage (37.3 percent).

Notre Dame remains the top-rated team in the RPI, but after a third loss, the Irish fall to a No. 2 seed.

The shakeup results in Baylor, Louisville, Oregon and UConn as No. 1 seeds. The Huskies return to the top line after being bumped a week ago following their loss at Louisville. It was the first time since 2007 that UConn wasn't projected as a No. 1 seed in bracketology.

Notre Dame's loss to Miami further complicates what has been the most difficult season of bracketology in recent memory. A lot of the debate at the top of the S-curve has focused on why Notre Dame remained a No. 1 seed after its loss to North Carolina when UConn wasn't afforded the same luxury. Now one of the more trickier decisions in bracketology is whether UConn or Mississippi State should be the fourth No. 1 seed. And making that distinction is much more difficult that the UConn vs. Notre Dame decision of last week.

Through Thursday's games, the Huskies get the nod as the fourth No. 1 seed by the narrowest of margins -- and there will be plenty of disagreement on social media. The NCAA selection committee might in fact place the Bulldogs ahead of the Huskies on Monday when it releases its first top-16 midseason reveal.

The Bulldogs have one fewer loss then UConn and, like the Huskies (whose losses were to Baylor and Louisville), their defeat was against a No. 1 seed (Oregon). Both have the same number of top-25 RPI wins (two) and top-50 wins (five). Both are unbeaten and in first place of their respective conferences (yes, Mississippi State's SEC lead is more impressive than UConn's in the American). The slight difference, and why the Huskies get the nod, comes down to schedule strength. UConn's is better in both nonconference strength and overall, and the difference is significant enough at this stage of the season to push the Huskies ahead of the Bulldogs.

Here is how the top eight looks following Thursday's games. NC State also dropped a seed line following its loss to Florida State. That's two straight losses by the Wolfpack, who are now a No. 3 seed.

No. 1 seeds: Baylor (Chicago), Louisville (Greensboro), Oregon (Portland), UConn (Albany)

No. 2 seeds: Mississippi State (Albany), Notre Dame (Portland), Stanford (Greensboro), Marquette (Chicago)

The geographical placement of these teams also becomes a bigger challenge for the committee. Ideally, having Notre Dame in Chicago would be far more fan-friendly and better for attendance, but the Irish are also no worse than No. 6 overall, and placing them in the same region as Baylor would create an imbalanced bracket.

Mississippi State fans should keep this in mind: Even as a No. 1 seed, the Bulldogs would have been bound for Albany with the way the other top seeds shake out. Whether Mississippi State is a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in this version of bracketology, UConn was going to be the other top team in the region.

Given the respective schedules of the two teams the rest of the way, it's possible (and perhaps likely) that Mississippi State will leapfrog the Huskies for a No. 1 seed. That could happen even with UConn winning the remainder of its games.

Thanks to Miami, the conversation has shifted yet again. And a compelling season just got even better.

Sad. But what I've feared for this year. Jess is our AA and Jackie is probably doing all she can. Marina is slightly desperate to help, maybe too much so. Arike is gunning and the lowest percentage shooter in nearly every game. Brianna is either half-asleep or carrying some injury --- I know nothing which, as a senior, would explain her passivity (except that I believe that this is simply who she is.) No one on the bench seems to have a clue about scoring, except Vaughn.

We can't consistently function at high levels with two AAs, one stressed out floor general, and no one else playing real basketball --- no matter how talented. The rest of this season should be quite stressful. Muffet should be grey-headed by the end of it. The major thing that I'm left curious about is whether the "nation" will ever wake up and give the AA honor to Jess ahead of Arike; and whether Jackie will be elevated to near AA status by the "experts." I'm continually stunned by how people who have played the game do not honor the hard things about it: defense, team coordination, rebounding, 5-player help, toughness and competitiveness when it counts.

I was spoiled by the great overall job last year, but the joy is leaving the building I fear. Let us reflect back for a moment upon how important a little lady nicknamed Kat was to us. Stability, toughness, rebounding, help defense, passing, refusing to lose. ... and Koko got there too in the end. There was more reason than we thought when Muffet hugged them both and said: these are my two favorite players. Some of that was honoring the seniors ... some something more.

The interesting thing to me is we often look lost on offense. I watched the last 6 minutes of the 4th and we couldn't get any type of flow or good look on offense. It seemed our offense only consisted of down screens for marina and arike. If they weren't open then they would throw back to Young or try to throw in the post. Very stagnant, not a lot of movement or cuts. We only came back and made it close by getting out in transition.

An actual pass first point guard would help this offense immeasurably. Do we have one on this year's team? Wouldn't surprise me if we did.

Watched the 2nd half last night. Starters played virtually the entire time. Muffet won't substitute regardless of how badly someone is playing.

I'd like to see Turner and Shepard split 40 minutes and a creator get their minutes. The only thing Turner is good at is blocking shots and the usually go out of bounds anyway. Shepard could use more rest too, IMO.

We've watched Muffet try to get Nixon functioning many times this season --- lots of chances to show something positive. But LOTS of really bad play. Muffet tried to use Prohaska, but Abby is a power forward in a guard's body --- she is just not geared for that. Other attempts at guard play have been even more dismal.

And as for taking Jess off the floor more ... GAWD just shoot us in the head now.

Jordan's +- numbers have not done well whether she's been on the floor with four starters or the clean up crew. It is a puzzlement. I find you descpription of Abby as a power forward in a guard's body painfully apt. Sorry Abby, I like your tenaciousness.

Take Jess off the floor and point production and rebounding plummets. Not just her's, the whole team. Jess is the heart of the fast break attack. I don't know it statistics would back it up but her halfcourt to 3/4 court outlet passes SEEM more accurate regardless of who receives them than a lot of her 12-15 foot high post passes down low. She's not a ball hog. Dishes off. Like many I like do see her take some shots from Kat Range. She was touted for having range up to the arc when she came from Nebraska. In this attack she seems much more one dimensional ... in the paint. No idea if this is the game plan or how her play has gravitated to fit in with the other four.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The No. 4 Notre Dame women's basketball team will play its second top-25 matchup of the week on Sunday, Feb. 10, when the Irish host No. 24 Florida State. Tip off inside Purcell Pavilion is set for Noon EST, airing live on ESPN. Sunday's contest will also be Notre Dame's Pink Zone game - an annual tradition honoring those brave women who have been affected by breast cancer. The Irish players will be wearing special Pink Zone warmups before the game while the coaching staff will adorn special polos.

NO. 3 ON FIRE FROM THREE
Over the last four games, Marina Mabrey has shot a blazing 18-of-30 from three, connecting on 60.0 percent. Mabrey converted a season high six threes in back-to-back games against Clemson and Georgia Tech.

Mabrey has raised her season three-point shooting percentage from .425 to .473 over the last four games. That number ranks fifth in the country and second in the ACC behind her sister Dara at Virginia Tech.

Marina has also raised her three-point field goals made per game from 2.3 to 2.7, which ranks 3rd in the ACC.

Lastly, Mabrey has officially surpassed her position coach, Beth (Morgan) Cunningham, for No. 3 all-time in career treys. moving up to 246 in her career. Up next is Sheila McMillen with 249, while Alicia Ratay holds the top spot at 262.

BEST IRISH PLAYER IN ACC PLAY ONLY?
Only one Irish player ranks in the top 10 in five different statistical categories in ACC play only. The answer: Marina Mabrey.

Mabrey ranks 10th in Scoring (16.2), 7th in FG% (.541), 7th in Assists (4.2), 2nd in 3PT FG% (.531), and 1st in 3PT FG (3.4).

TURNER TIDBITS
The block party continues for Brianna Turner, who's defensive production has ramped up. She's collected 27 blocks over the last seven games, including a season high of five three times.

In addition, on Jan. 31 at Clemson, Turner notched her sixth double-double on the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds - also earned a career high 6 steals.

BEAST ON THE BOARDS
Since Shepard's first two seasons were at Nebraska, her four-year career totals don't count towards the Notre Dame record book. If it did, Shepard would be Notre Dame's all-time rebounding record holder with 1,080 rebounds, surpassing Ruth Riley (1,007).

Shepard posted a 15-point, 18-rebound, double-double at Marquette (12/22). Her 18 rebounds marked her highest rebound total in an Irish uniform and was just two shy of her career high set at Nebraska.

Shepard is coming off a 17-point, 17-rebound double-double at Miami (2/7), which marked her third 15+ point, 15+ rebound, double-double on the year.

BIG-GAME JACKIE
The title says it all about junior guard Jackie Young. Last season, the Irish played 16 ranked opponents and in those games Young outperformed her season scoring average, with 16.6 points on 51.8 percent shooting, to go with her 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists against top-25 teams.

The trend of Big Game Jackie has carried over into the 2018-19 season. Against seven ranked opponents this year, Young is averaging 16.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

PROTECTING THE HOUSE
Purcell Pavilion continues to be one of the toughest venues to play in women's hoops. Over the last 109 games at home, the Irish have only lost three times, with all three coming against UConn.

Notre Dame is 477-93 all-time inside Purcell Pavilion. The Irish have sold out Purcell Pavilion 55 times and boasts a 45-10 record in those instances.

Most notably, however, has been how dominant the Irish have been in league play at home. Notre Dame has won a school-record 55 consecutive home conference games, beginning with a 66-47 win over Providence on Feb. 14, 2012, in BIG EAST play.

GETTING TO THE LINE
The Irish continue to attack the basket and reach the charity stripe, ranking first in the country in made free-throws with 401 and first in attempts with 556.

Arike currently ranks 17th nationally in made free throws (111) and 15th in attempts (145). Against No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, Arike went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, which stood as the second best single-game performance in ND history, trailing just Ruth Riley & Ashley Barlow (13-for-13).

GAME OF RUNS
Basketball is a game of runs, and the Irish have achieved success by not allowing a single 10-0 run by any opponent yet this season. In fact, Notre Dame leads its opposition, 28-0, in that category. Notre Dame recorded its best run of the season against Georgia Tech on Feb. 3, scoring 24 straight.
