Young's triple-double helps No. 1 ND beat Lady Vols 77-62

Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw worried her team might be facing Tennessee at the worst possible time as the Lady Volunteers tried to end their longest losing streak in nearly half a century.

Sure enough, the top-ranked Fighting Irish needed to erase a second-half deficit before winning 77-62 on Thursday to hand the Lady Vols their sixth consecutive loss. Jackie Young recorded a triple-double and Arike Ogunbowale scored 24 of her 28 points after halftime as Notre Dame won its 12th straight.

This marked the second straight year Notre Dame (19-1) came from behind to beat Tennessee. Last season, the Irish rallied from 23 points down to defeat the Lady Vols 84-70 for their biggest comeback in program history.

"I was worried for a couple of reasons," McGraw said. "One, last year's game really turned our season around and I thought they would be talking about how this game could turn their season around. ... And I thought they kind of had their backs against the wall and were playing as hard as they could against the No. 1 team."

Tennessee (12-7) hadn't lost six straight games since 1970. The Lady Vols led for most of the first half Thursday and were still ahead early in the third quarter before Notre Dame took command.

"I'm disappointed, obviously, in the outcome, but I'll tell you this, our kids didn't have anything left in the tank," Tennessee coach Holly Warlick said. "They fought and played hard. That's a great step for us and a good process for this team."

Young had 16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and only two turnovers for the seventh triple-double in Notre Dame history. The school's last player to post a triple-double was Lindsay Allen against Chattanooga on Dec. 27, 2016.

Notre Dame missed 11 of its first 12 shots and trailed by as many as eight points before outscoring Tennessee 46-28 in the second half.

"The coaches just really told us to take good shots," Young said. "I think that was the problem at the beginning of the game. As the game went on, we were just able to stay in our offense and look for the open shots and just take wide-open layups really. At the start of the game, we were just a little rattled and just trying to score as soon as we could instead of staying in the play and just spreading our offense."

Tennessee led 38-32 early in the third quarter before Ogunbowale scored seven points in an 11-0 Notre Dame run. Tennessee rallied to tie it at 44, but Ogunbowale scored 11 more points in a 19-2 spurt that put the game away.

The Irish scored 13 straight points during that 19-2 stretch.

"I just stayed calm," Ogunbowale said. "I have to really work on my start, but I also know there's still 20 minutes left in the game. Just stay focused."

Tennessee's Zaay Green scored a career-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Evina Westbrook scored 16.

Jessica Shepard and Brianna Turner each scored 13 points for Notre Dame. Shepard also had 11 rebounds.

BIG PICTURE

Notre Dame: Young is the only non-senior in the starting lineup, but Thursday's game showed how much the junior guard means to the Irish. "She's kind of been the glue that keeps us together," McGraw said. "She's someone we can count on to do absolutely everything."

Tennessee: Green's breakthrough performance offers the Lady Vols at least some cause for encouragement. The Lady Vols now need Rennia Davis to break out of her slump. Davis, the Lady Vols' second-leading scorer this season, had six points and shot 3 of 14 before fouling out. She's shot a combined 8 of 43 over Tennessee's last four games.

MISSING MEME

Tennessee was playing without starting guard Meme Jackson, who hurt her ankle Monday in a 80-79 loss to Arkansas. Her status is day to day.

ROLE REVERSAL

Notre Dame beat Tennessee for the eighth time in its last nine attempts. Tennessee owned a 20-0 record against the Irish before this stretch.

WE BACK PAT

This game was part of the We Back Pat Week initiative to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease in honor of former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, who died in June 2016 at the age of 64. Both Tennessee and Notre Dame wore We Back Pat T-shirts during pregame warmups.

A check for a $500,000 annual grant to the University of Tennessee Medical Center's Pat Summitt Clinic was presented at the end of the first quarter. The clinic is dedicated to the fight against Alzheimer's.

Irish lost the First Quarter, opening the game shooting 1-12, missing a bunch of easy shots. That was the lowest scoring quarter for ND but was the highest scoring quarter for the Vols. The 2nd Q was a tie at 17 each. ND doubled up UTN in the 3rd Q and outscored them by 6 in the last quarter.

The game was close early because of ND's missed layups not because of superior UTN play.

Game Recap: Women's Basketball | 1/24/2019 9:40:00 PM

#1 Irish Takes Down Tennessee, 77-62
Young posts first career triple-double

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team bounced back after a cold shooting start to earn a hard fought 77-62 road victory over Tennessee (12-7). The Fighting Irish (19-1) won their 12th straight behind a Jackie Young triple-double and a game high 28 points from Arike Ogunbowale.

Young posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and a career high 10 assists, achieving the seventh triple-double in school history, and the first since Lindsay Allen versus Chattanooga on Dec. 27, 2016.

"I was pretty happy with the second half. Our offense was way out of rhythm to start the game. We tried to get the ball to the post but settled for jumpers, and once we started to get it inside, I thought the high-low game was really effective," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "Thought we moved the ball better and defended better in the second half."

Jessica Shepard notched her third consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. In addition, Brianna Turner collected 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

How It Happened
Notre Dame's offense suffered from a slight cold shooting spell to start the game, missing 11 straight shots, before ending with four consecutive makes, as Shepard, Ogunbowale, Turner and Young all contributed. After the opening period, the Irish trailed the Lady Vols 17-14.

The Irish offense heated up midway through the second, converting seven straight from the field to regain the lead at 29-28. However, the Lady Vols countered with a 6-0 scoring run before a Shepard layup beat the buzzer, bringing the Irish to within three at the half, 34-31. Turner boasted 10 points at the midway point, followed by nine points and six boards from Shepard.

Down 38-32 at 8:26, the Irish recorded an 11-0 run over a two-minute span, jumping ahead 43-38. Tennessee continued to fight back, tying the game at 44-all. Yet, Notre Dame countered with an 11-2 scoring spree over the final 4:30 of the period, claiming a 55-46 advantage heading into the fourth.

Ogunbowale, who only possessed four points at the half, caught fire in the third. The senior tallied 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, which included two treys.

The Irish started the fourth by scoring the first eight points of the period. Mabrey kicked it off with a three, followed by back-to-back jumpers from Ogunbowale and a free-throw from Young. Notre Dame then built upon that momentum, extending a lead as large as 21 points with 1:19 remaining, before reaching the 77-62 final.

Player of the Game
Young earned her first career triple-double, dishing out a career high 10 assists along the way. Young also poured in 16 points and was one rebound shy of tying her season high with 12 tonight.

Notes
  • Notre Dame now trails the overall series, 21-8, against Tennessee, picking up its third ever win in Knoxville. The Irish have won eight of the past nine in the series.
  • Creeping toward 2,000 points/1,000 rebounds - Shepard brings her career totals to 1,988 points and 1,044 rebounds.
  • Young's triple-double was the seventh in school history and the first since Lindsay Allen versus Chattanooga on Dec. 27, 2016.
  • Shepard recorded her third straight double-double, marking the first occurrence this season. Shepard recorded five straight over the ACC and NCAA Tournament last season.
  • Ogunbowale finished with a game high 28 points – her 13th 20-plus scoring performance of the season.
  • Ogunbowale poured in 16 of her 28 points in the third quarter alone.
  • Young dished out a career high 10 assists.
  • Turner earned her 16th double-digit scoring performance on the year.

Up Next
The Irish remain on the road for what will be their second of three straight road games. Next, Notre Dame travels to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. ET on ACCN Extra.

https://www.ndinsider.com/basketball/womens/young-questionable-as-irish-women-travel-to-north-carolina/article_e0286502-186a-5be2-a79d-2f0e38f20dfa.html

Per McGraw, in Anthony Anderson, NDInsider pregame article. She turned an ankle on the last play in practice Saturday. And, per McGraw, Abby Prohaska will start in Jackie can't play.

The Mabrey's are even with 228 treys made apiece. They hold 4th Place on ND's All-Time Leader's List. Michaela shot 228-576, 39.6% while Marina is 228-569, (7 less attempts) 40.1%.

On Sunday Marina could pass the 3rd place record holder Beth Morgan at 231. After that is Sheila McMillen with 249. Alicia Rattay hold the ND record with 262 in 550 attempts, an astonishing 19 attempts less than Marina has already taken. Marina needs 35 more treys to pass Rattay. It's doable with 19 games to play counting the remaining regular season plus the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

Fans are lamenting ND's lack of 3 point shooting this season including Marina's. BUT she's shooting 42.5%, 34-80, which surpasses her Career Average 40.1%. Considering she missed the first 5 games of the season with a leg injury and was a tad wobbly in the first couple of games back, she's shooting 3's quite well.

Marina, 34-of-80 this season for 42.5 percent, is on pace despite missing the first five games to lead Notre Dame in 3-pointers for the third straight year. She's taken 5.33 attempts/game, hitting 2.3 a game. IF ND plays the maximum number of in the tournaments, she'd have 19 game to score 35 treys or 1.84/game. In her last 5 games, she's taken 23 treys converting 11, 47.8% and that's includes shooting 1-5 against Tennessee.

OTHER CAREER MARK CHASERS

Arike needs 110 Points to pass Beth Morgan and 145 points to pass Skylar as ND's All-Time Leading Scorer. (Quite doable).

Jess needs 12 Points to hit the 2000 point mark. She's already has surpassed 1000 Rebounds. She will surpass Ruth Riley's mark of 2072 points and 1007 rebounds but not become the ND Record Holder as her first two years were at Nebraska.

Bri is #2 in ND Career Blocks with 310. She needs 61 to pass Ruth Riley. IF ND runs the table she'd have 19 games and have to average 3.16 blocks/game substantially higher than her 2.4 season average. However in the last 3 games she's recorded 11 blocks for a 3.67 average and over the last 10 games including a zero block game against Wake Forest, she's made 30 blocks for a 3.0 average. She's recorded 4 blocks in games against Drake, Con, WKU, Marquette, and Tennessee, and rejected 5 against a tall VaTech team.

1st 02:50 TIMEOUT Tied at 16.

ND is scoring ... but so is UNC. ND had a 16-10 lead but last 3 trips were a missed 3 by Marina, she already has 1, a missed J by Nixon in for Abby, and a Nixon turnover. Each time the Heels made a J in the paint.

Shep 3-3. ND's lob passes inside look crisper so far.

Rico had her pocket picked and Heels score to take the lead!

Mabs Trey GOOD.

Rico coast to coast miss.

Shep first miss on a layup.

Rico drives downcourt, heads into the far corner for a buzzer pointer trey, NG!

End of 1 ND 19 NC 18
