Game Recap: Women's Basketball | 1/13/2019 3:21:00 PM

Strong Defensive Effort Leads No. 1 Irish to 78-48 Win over Wake Forest
Mabrey led with 18 points while Turner earned a double-double

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to garner a 78-48 victory over Wake Forest inside Purcell Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Irish (16-1, 4-0) held the Demon Deacons (9-7, 0-3) to 15 first half points and 28.6 percent shooting in the game, holding their leading scorer, Elisa Penna, to five points.

Marina Mabrey led the Irish in scoring for the fourth time this season with 18 points to go with her season high seven rebounds. Brianna Turner notched her fifth double-double on the year with 14 points and a season high 12 rebounds. Jessica Shepard rounded out the double-digit scoring with 16 points and a season best four steals.

"I was particularly pleased with the defense, especially on (Elissa) Penna. She's a great player who can score in so many ways. We mixed up who was guarding her - both Turner and Young did a great job," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "Offensively, I thought Brianna and Jess were really active today. Marina shot the ball well. A lot of good things on both ends of the floor."

How It Happened
Shepard scored eight of the team's first 14 points which ignited an 18-0 start to the game. Wake Forest didn't connect on a field until the 2:13 mark of the first quarter, as the Irish held them to 0-for-11 shooting and eight turnovers in that span. Notre Dame ended the period up 22-6, in which 16 of the points were scored in the paint.

Notre Dame's defense left its mark on the second quarter as well, keeping the Demon Deacons off the scoreboard from 7:11 to 2:07, ultimately holding Wake to 4-of-16 shooting for the period. Shepard reached double digits (10) by half and was followed by nine points from Mabrey, who led the Irish in scoring in the quarter with five. All-in-all, the Irish boasted a 37-15 lead at the half.

Shepard and Mabrey combined for 12 of the team's first 14 points of the third quarter, igniting a 22-5 scoring spree over the first six minutes, extending Notre Dame's lead to 59-20. Turner led the Irish in scoring with 8 points in the third, already achieving her double-double for the day.

Boasting a 62-28 lead heading into the fourth, the Irish cruised to the 78-48 final, scoring 52 of their points in the paint. In addition, Mikayla Vaughn came off the bench to supply quality minutes once again, earning nine points and a career high tying four blocks.

Mabrey scores 18, No. 1 Notre Dame routs Wake Forest 78-48
Jan 13, 2019
Associated Press

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- With her off-campus roommate Arike Ogunbowale struggling, Marina Mabrey took over the scoring load for No. 1 Notre Dame in a wire-to-wire 78-48 victory over Wake Forest on Sunday.

"It happens to everyone," Mabrey said after scoring 18 points while Ogunbowale, averaging 22.6 points a game coming in, was held to four points on 1-of-11 shooting. "I'm confident the next game she will be ready to go -- she got the misses out of the way."

Mabrey hit 7 of 11 shots, including 4 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes. Ogunbowale, who scored 30 points Thursday in Notre Dame's 82-68 victory over No. 2 Louisville, saw her 37-game double-digit scoring streak end despite playing a team-high 29 minutes.

"Sometimes you just have that kind of day," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "Coming off a big game like Louisville, she just struggled to find her shot and her rhythm. But she did some other things (five assists)."

Jessica Shepard had 16 points while Brianna Turner had 14 points and 12 rebounds -- her fifth double-double of the season -- for the Fighting Irish (16-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). They combined to go 13 for 18 from the field.

"Offensively, Bri and Jessica were really active today and Marina shot the ball well," McGraw said.

Wake Forest coach Jen Hoover was impressed by the Irish.

"It's hard to guard a team that has five players on the court who are so good offensively," Hoover said. "They are much different (with Turner back from sitting out last season with an ACL injury). She's such a rim protector."

Christina Morra scored 13 points and Ivana Raca had 12 for the Demon Deacons (9-7, 0-3). Elisa Penna, Wake's 6-foot-3 leading scorer coming in at 15.4 points per game, was held to just five points on 1-of-12 shooting, including 0 for 5 from long distance.

"I was really pleased with our defense, particularly on Penna," McGraw said. "She's just a great player, hard to guard. We mixed up who was on her -- Brianna and Jackie did a good job on her and the others helped out as well. We did a good job finding her in the zone. That was No. 1 in the keys of the game."

Ogunbowale made two free throws with 54 seconds left in the first half. Notre Dame took a 37-15 halftime lead after starting on an 18-0 run.

Notre Dame commanded the boards 30-16, forced 13 turnovers and held Wake Forest, which missed its first 11 shots, to 20 percent shooting (6 of 30). But the Irish had 10 miscues themselves and shot 41 percent (14 of 34) in the first half, including 6 of 18 in the second quarter.

The Fighting Irish came out shooting 81.8 percent with eight assists on nine baskets as they increased the lead to 57-20 with 4:16 to go in the third quarter. Shepard, Mabrey and Turner all had six points in the spurt. The lead reached 40 points before Notre Dame finished the third quarter up 62-28.

BIG PICTURE
Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons were playing their second straight game without 6-foot-1 guard Alex Sharp, their second leading scorer at 12.7 ppg. Sharp broke her right hand during practice in between the Deacons' losses to Miami and Boston College and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Sharp, who is from Melbourne, Australia, is one of five international players on the Wake Forest roster. The others are Ellen Hahne (Sweden), Raca (Serbia), Morra (Canada) and Penna (Italy).

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish have won 28 straight games against unranked teams after beating a top 10-opponent. But they again had trouble handling the ball in the first half, committing 10 turnovers and finishing with 18. Against Louisville, Notre Dame had 11 of its 18 turnovers in the first half.

SISTERS AND ALUMNAE
On Wednesday, Notre Dame visits Virginia Tech (13-3, 0-3 ACC), which has Mabrey's younger sister, 5-foot-7 freshman Dara, starting at guard. Dara Mabrey is averaging 12.0 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the floor, 48 percent from 3-point land and 89 percent at the charity stripe. She also has a team-leading 45 assists for the Hokies, who were off Sunday.

"I've never played against (Dara) before," said Marina, the driveway games aside. The sisters did lead Manasquan (N.J.) High School to a state title in 2015. "It's going to be different, obviously. I'm looking forward to seeing her; I haven't seen her in a while. It will be fun."

The two Mabreys' older sister, Michaela, played for Notre Dame from 2012-16, played on three Final Four teams and was a two-time captain for McGraw. She is now director of recruiting for the Louisiana State women's basketball team.

Melissa D'Amico, who played for McGraw and graduated from Notre Dame in 2008, is an assistant for Hoover.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - For seven of the next 10 games, the No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team will hit the road, beginning with Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Tip is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Cassell Coliseum, streaming live on ACCN Extra. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series, 10-1, with a 3-1 mark at Virginia Tech.

STARTERS' NUMBERS
Right now, three Irish players all average above 4.0 assists per game and rank within the top-6 in the league. Jackie Young ranks 3rd at 4.7 assists per game, Mabrey fifth at 4.3 and Ogunbowale sixth at 4.2.

Furthermore, all five starters average 13.0 ppg or higher, accounting for 88.9 percent of the team's scoring.

MABREY VS MABREY
For the first time in their respective basketball careers, it'll be a Mabrey vs Mabrey showdown.

Marina & Dara played together in high school in 2015 at Manasquan, where they won the Tournament of Champions.

"She's my sister, and I want to see her play well in every game, so if they're playing us or anybody, I want her to play well every time she steps on the court," Marina said. "I'm just really happy I get to watch her play and see that she's playing at such a high level. It's cool to see someone so young impact a program so quickly."

2,000 POINTS & 1,000 REBOUNDS
Shepard is quickly approaching a very rare milestone in 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Entering Wednesday's game, Shepard boasts 1,944 points and 1,012 rebounds, which rank 14th and 13th respectively among active D1 players.

The only Irish player to ever achieve this impressive feat was 2001 graduate Ruth Riley, who garnered 2,072 points and 1,007 rebounds.

STAT SHEET STUFFER
A stat sheet stuffer game is when a player records at least five of three different stats. Against No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, Young collected 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, marking her seventh 5-5-5 game on the season --> which is two more than the next highest player in Shepard.

BLOCK PARTY
Graduate student Brianna Turner is turning up the heat in the block department. Turner has reached her season high of four blocks on four separate occasions this season. The Texas native is averaging 2.1 blocks/game, which ranks 2nd in the ACC and ranks 34th in the nation. Furthermore, Turner is chasing Ruth Riley's all-time mark of 370 at Notre Dame, currently in second place with 299.

GAME OF RUNS
Basketball is a game of runs, and the Irish have achieved success by not allowing a single 10-0 run by any opponent yet this season. In fact, Notre Dame leads its opposition, 19-0, in that category. Notre Dame first posted its longest run of the season vs Binghamton on Dec. 16 with 21 straight.

Then the Irish matched it twice vs Pitt on Jan. 3, recording 21-0 runs in both the first and second quarters.

GETTING TO THE LINE
The Irish continue to attack the basket and reach the charity stripe, ranking first in the country in made free-throws with 290 and second in attempts with 396.

Ogunbowale currently ranks 16th nationally in made free throws (80) and 18th in attempts (100). Against No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, Ogunbowale went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, which stood as the second best single-game performance in ND history, trailing just Ruth Riley & Ashley Barlow (13-for-13).

Taylor Emery got the Hokies out to a quick lead in the first quarter and the senior guard would go on to score a game high 26 points, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team (13-3, 0-3) would fall 62-58 at John Paul Jones Arena Thursday evening.

...

Tech build its largest lead in the third quarter, following an 8-0 spurt at the 5:54 mark going up 19, the largest lead of the night. However, UVA would fight back, adjusting defensively and using hot shooting in the fourth to mount a comeback.

...

For the Hokies, Regan Magarity recorded another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, Tech shot 37 percent from the floor and made 12 shots from beyond the arc.

Not great energy or concentration, but the skill level is just so much higher. I'm hoping it gets better when they settle into a routine for the second semester. That first week back from break where you just need to get used to being in class again and get used to your schedule is always tiring and it throws off your routine.

No. 1 Irish Earn 80-51 Win at Virginia Tech
Shepard leads the way with 20-point, 11-rebound double-double

BLACKSBURG, Virginia – The No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team began a road swing on Wednesday in which seven of its next 10 games would be played on the road. The Fighting Irish (17-1, 5-0) kicked it off with a strong 80-51 victory over Virginia Tech (13-4, 0-4).

Three Irish finished in double figures, led by Jessica Shepard's 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. Arike Ogunbowale sat closely behind with 19 points, followed by 15 points from Marina Mabrey. In addition, Brianna Turner collected a season high five blocks.

"I was really pleased with the game defensively and really happy with the zone. Thought we made some good adjustments and played smart defensively," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "Offensively, Shepard had a huge game. They couldn't handle her inside. Our advantage was the mismatch in size inside and I thought we did a good job of taking advantage of it."

How It Happened
Virginia Tech jumped on Notre Dame early, making five of their first 10 shots to go up 11-2 and prompting an Irish timeout at 5:55. The Irish, who started 1-for-6 from the field in the quarter, rebounded by shooting 7-for-12 for the remainder of the period. Shepard led the way at 5-for-7 from the field, ending the first in double digits already with 10 points. In addition, Mabrey went 2-for-2 from deep to add six points.

Trailing 20-18 to begin the second, Mabrey's third trey of the game kicked off a Notre Dame 14-0 run in which all five starters contributed points. In fact, the Irish held the Hokies to without a field goal from 8:50 to the 2:30 mark, building a 42-25 advantage on a 24-1 scoring spree.

However, Virginia Tech retaliated with a 9-0 run before two Shepard free throws gave the Irish a 44-34 lead at the half. Shepard boasted 14 points by the midway point, followed by 11 points from Mabrey.

The Irish spread the wealth to kick off the third as all five starters contributed to the first 11 points of the period. Notre Dame went on to record its best quarter, outscoring Virginia Tech 29-10 on 10-of-16 shooting.

Ogunbowale tallied 12 points in the third quarter alone, while Shepard reached her double-double by the end of the period. The Irish took a 73-44 lead heading into the fourth before cruising to the 80-51 final.

Player of the Game
Shepard shot an efficient 8-for-11 from the field to finish with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. It marked her fifth double-double on the year, tying Turner for most on the team. It also marked her first double-double this season in which she scored at least 20 points as well.

Stat of the Game
From the 8:50 mark to 2:30 in the second quarter, the Irish held Virginia Tech to without a field goal, outscoring the Hokies, 24-1, in that span.

Notes
  • Notre Dame leads the overall series, 11-1, against Virginia Tech, including a 4-1 mark in Blacksburg.
  • Irish are 82-3 in ACC play since joining the league at the start of the 2013-14 season.
  • Tonight's game began a giant road swing for the Irish, in which they'll play seven of their next 10 on the road.
  • Tonight's game also marked a Mabrey vs Mabrey showdown with sisters Marina (senior at Notre Dame) and Dara (freshman at Virginia Tech).
  • Shepard recorded her fifth double-double on the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds. It also marked her first double-double this season in which she scored over 20 points and the first from an Irish player since Young tallied 28 points/12 rebounds at DePaul on Nov. 17.
  • Turner recorded a season high five blocks to go with her seven points and six rebounds. It marked the first five or more block Irish performance since Turner notched five against Robert Morris back on March 17, 2017.
  • Prohaska tied her career high of four steals in tonight's win.
  • Patterson reeled in a season high seven rebounds.
  • Creeping toward 2,000 points/1,000 rebounds → Shepard brings her career totals to 1,964 points and 1,023 rebounds.

Up Next
The Irish return home for one game when they host Boston College on Sunday, Jan. 20. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, streaming live on ACCN Extra. In addition, the Irish will hold a post-game autographs session with the entire team.

Shepard, big run lift No. 1 Notre Dame past Hokies, 80-51
8:54 PM CT
Associated Press

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- A fast start for Virginia Tech had No. 1 Notre Dame back on its heels, but only briefly.

Before the second quarter was over, the Fighting Irish put together a 24-1 run, leaving a six-point deficit a distant memory in an 80-51 victory against the Hokies on Wednesday night.

They came out and gave us a knockout punch. Fortunately we took it and gave them one of our own.
Irish coach Muffet McGraw said.

Jessica Shepard had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Arike Ogunbowale had 19 points and Marina Mabrey scored 15 for the Fighting Irish (17-1, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Notre Dame trailed 24-18 before Mabrey sparked the run with her third 3-pointer of the first half. The burst took just six minutes and ended with Notre Dame ahead 42-25 and on its way to its 10th consecutive victory.

McGraw smiled a knowing smile when asked if she knew a run was coming. On a team with five players averaging at least 13.2 points, it's highly unlikely all five will have an off-night together.

"You know that we are a powerful offensive team and we have a lot of weapons," she said. "Really any of the five are capable of having a big game for us. It's just a question of who it's going to be."

Virginia Tech (13-4, 0-4) responded to the run by scoring nine straight points to bring the crowd back into it, but it was 44-34 at the half. Notre Dame pulled away thereafter, dropping the Hokies to 1-47 in program history against teams in the top five.

"I was disappointed in our fight," Hokies coach Kenny Brooks said. "As soon as they took the lead it was like somebody took the air out of the balloon."

Taylor Emery had 15 points and Trinity Baptiste had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Virginia Tech.

SISTER ACT
The game marked the first on-court matchup of sisters Marina Mabrey, a Notre Dame senior, and Dara Mabrey, a freshman for the Hokies. The pair played together in 2015 at Manasquan High School in Belmar, New Jersey, but hadn't ever gone head-to-head before.

As with her team, Marina had the decided upper hand, scoring 15 points while Dara missed 12 of 14 shots and scored five.

"Just being able to experience that at such a high level in the ACC -- a lot of people don't get to do that, so just cherishing this moment," Marina said of the matchup. "It probably won't happen again."

The two spent a lot of time together the night before the game, but there was no smack talk, before, during or after, Marina said.

"We just talked about normal stuff like offenses and defenses," she said. "Things like that. We really were just happy to see each other."

Virginia Tech did not make Dara available after the game.

BIG PICTURE
Notre Dame: The Irish have five players averaging at least 13.2 points and apart from two baskets by Danielle Patterson, the five accounted for all the points during the big run. Ogunbowale had seven, Mabrey five, Shepard two, Brianna Turner four and Jackie Young two.

Virginia Tech: The loss continued conference woes for the Hokies, who won their first 13 and are 56-31 under third-year coach Kenny Brooks, but just 10-26 in league play. In his first season, Virginia Tech won its first 15, then was 4-12 in the league. Last season, they started 11-2, then lost 10 of 16 ACC contests. Their first three ACC losses this season came by a total of 13 points.

"It's very frustrating," said Regan Magarity, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. "But I think as a team, we know we have games coming up that we can and should win."

HE SAID IT
They're fun to watch. I think there's 11 teams in the WNBA and they're the 12th.
