Ruth Riley Finalist for Women's Basketball Hall of Fame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – At halftime of Thursday night's No. 1 Notre Dame vs. No. 2 Louisville matchup, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame announced its 12 finalists for consideration for induction into its Hall of Fame. Highlighting the list is none other than 2001 Notre Dame graduate and national champion Ruth Riley.

The 12 finalists for the Class of 2019 are: Beth Bass (Contributor), Debbie Brock (Veteran Player), Joan Cronan (Contributor), Nora Lynn Finch (Contributor), Lucille Kyvallos (Veteran Coach), Ticha Penicheiro (International Player), Ruth Riley (Player), Carolyn Bush Roddy (Veteran Player), Paul Sanderford (Coach), Bob Schneider (Coach), Valerie Still (Player) and Amy Tucker (Contributor - Assistant Coach).

"Humble and honored to be in consideration with this class, congrats to all the other finalists," Riley commented on Twitter.

Riley is one of the prestigious few to win a NCAA title, WNBA title and a gold medal at the Olympic Games. She is the only Irish player to record over 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds.

Riley was the winner of the 2001 Naismith Award, becoming the first Notre Dame player to be honored. A three-time All-American, Riley was also named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2001 Final Four.

The center went on to a 13-year WNBA career, which included titles in 2003 and 2006 with the Detroit Shock.

Riley is still involved with the game of basketball today, serving as TV studio analyst and radio color commentator for the Miami Heat and Fox Sport Sun.

The Class of 2019 will be selected from the 12 finalists and announced, along with the 2019 Trailblazers of the Game Award recipient, on ESPN2 during the February 4th Baylor at Texas game (7:00 p.m. ET). Below is the selection timeline for the Class of 2019:

This clown wrote two post game articles on the #1 vs #2 match. The first hinting at the refs costing UL the game, and the second just flat at blaming the refs and McGraw instructing players to play dirty and how to get away with it. In both articles he accuses Arike of kicking Carter in the face. He neglected to mention Carter's take down of Arike, and that while both players were on the floor, Arike rolled over with her legs raised to avoid hitting anyone and she achieved that. The self described "reporter" aka, shameless homer, also neglected to mention that two UL players inflamed the situation by grabbing Arike's legs while she was on her back on the floor.

Louisville was mugging people throughout the game. They looked more reminiscent of the Charleston's Chiefs Hansen Brothers than basketball players. The refs took a bunch of trips to the monitor to review plays and took their time before assessing fouls. It wasn't by accident that so many UL players fouled out. They earned it! Their coach wanted to neutralize ND's rebounding and transition game by banging bodies up and down the court. Their muggings resulted in a large number of fouls called. They got their objective, turnovers, but the kamikaze action took out their own players through attrition and sent ND to the free throw line.

Meanwhile UL's highly touted 3 point game on which they rely, disappeared. Perhaps it's difficult for players to act like thugs on defense and then show finesse at 3 point shooting. They threw quite a few air balls in the process turning over the ball when they were bouncing balls off the rim that a variety of ND players pulled down.

Walz was hoisted on his own petard. And this clown wants to blame collusion between Muffet and the refs.



#2 LOUISVILLE FIGHTS TO END BUT FALLS TO #1 NOTRE DAME

The Red Green Show came to Purcell Pavilion on the campus of Notre Dame University last night, but featured a late substitution. I’m a referee, but I can change, if I have to, I guess, and thus the Zebra Lodge meeting commenced. The Cardinal women had a lot on their hands: contending with fouls, ND’s size in the paint, and a raucous arena filled to the brim with green clad Irish fans. Louisville would fight until the end, but what at times felt like a one versus three battle ended 82-68 in favor of Notre Dame.

The red clad warriors entered a standing room only affair in South Bend but refused to be intimidated even after being confronted with wall-to-wall lime green shirts for the green out night that reminded one of either shag carpet or Kermit the Frog’s regurgitated dinner. After a fan participation green glow stick intro that had this reporter mentally jamming to Orbital tracks, the much awaited showdown between #1 and #2 tipped off in front of a national ESPN audience and attendees alike. Pre-game, both Jeff Walz and Associate Head Coach Stephanie Norman had specified the focus would have to be on aggressive rebounding and perimeter shooting if the Cards were to stand a chance. While rebounding would haunt Louisville at the end, it would be the unknown unknowns that took center stage.

The first half would be dominated by alternating runs, as each team found success both in the paint and in transition. The Cards would go on a 6-0 run, only to be answered by an Irish 8-0 run, with six of the eight coming off fast break layups. But Asia Durr responded with a 6-0 run of her own, and would score 10 of her 29 ultimate points in the first quarter alone. Durr would shoot 48.6% from the field on the night with six rebounds and two assists. Impressively, only three of those points came from beyond the arc, as Asia and the Cards would not back down against the imposing interior patrolled by Notre Dame’s Shepard and Turner. Louisville would score 16 points in the paint to Notre Dame’s 12 in the first half, and this against an Irish squad that averages 52.7 points in the paint per game.

While the Cards found themselves up 35-33 at the half, the aggressive play came at a cost. Sam Fuehring, Jazmine Jones, Asia Durr, and Kylee Shook would all end the half with two fouls, while Arica Carter and Dana Evans would end with three. All told, the Cards would be whistled for 15 fouls in the first half compared to only 6 for the Irish. Notre Dame went 8 for 27 from the field in the half but the difference was easily made up by 17 made out of 23 free throw opportunities. The Cards outplayed Notre Dame on many fronts, notably garnering fifteen points off turnovers and forcing the Irish to give the ball up eleven times while only giving it up twice themselves. A mix of perimeter shooting with aggressive drives to the basket created either layups or kick-out opportunities resulting in stop-and-pop shots from the wing or the key. But, combined with the foul differential, Notre Dame had eleven points from transition layups to Louisville’s four while the oft mentioned focal point of rebounding sat at 29 to 17 in favor of the Irish as second half play began.

While second half whistles were slightly more egalitarian in nature, the damage had been done. Walz summed up his aggressive philosophy in the face of foul trouble at the post-game presser:

You can’t just let somebody drive to the basket and score on you every time…. That’s what I tell them. You’ve got to keep playing.​

At the 6:20 mark in the third quarter, all five Cardinals on the court had three fouls. Whether Walz desired it or not it was clear that the Louisville players had, though not completely, dialed back the aggression to some degree. This did not, however, prevent a lengthy review by the officials after a foul committed by Arica Carter (her fourth) brought both her and senior Notre Dame guard Arike Ogunbowale tumbling to the floor beneath the Irish basket. The video review revealed no flagrant behavior on Carter’s part, but also missed some interesting Notre Dame tactics. Ogunbowale would be the only player to finish with 30 points and two kicks to Carter’s face on the night. This sequence was just one of the clear signs that the winds had shifted as Notre Dame would outscore the Cards 24-12 in the third, capped by a devastating three pointer at the horn to make it 57-47.

And yet the Cardinals refused to quit. As fouls mounted, Walz would be forced to call on a freshman averaging only 10.8 minutes per game and 2.1 points. But the young recruit from Ashland, KY would rise to the challenge. Mykasa Robinson would play well on both sides of the ball, taking a crucial charge and scoring all six of her points in the fourth quarter as she contributed to a Cardinal 8-0 run which cut the Irish lead to two with two minutes remaining. On Robinson’s performance, Walz would say:

She’s just been grinding it out every day in practice. We needed her tonight and she performed…. It’s what she does, she makes plays.

But it was not to be. Arike Ogunbowale could not be stopped, ending the evening with 19 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter. Three Cardinals would foul out before the night was over, with the Irish shooting a final tally of 29 for 39 from the charity stripe. And yet it is hard to look past those points of focus so often mentioned in the lead up to the game. Notre Dame out-rebounded the Cards 48-32 and garnered 20 second chance points to Louisville’s five, with the Irish also finding 23 points from fast breaks to the Cardinal’s six. Given the fouls and the rebounding margins, it’s impressive that Walz’s squad was able to keep it as close as they did for as long as they did. But with under a minute to play, Ogunbowale would hit a dagger three to make it 73-66. To add insult to injury, Dunham’s fifth foul would be ruled intentional and unsportsmanlike as would Fuehring’s fourth. Four free throws and possession in both cases sealed the deal, and at last the Cardinals were forced concede.

Walz was conciliatory in the post-game press gaggle, and immediately pointed out that his team would have little rest before a match-up against Georgia Tech at the KFC Yum! Center this Sunday. It seems the focus will remain on competing against a stacked ACC schedule with eyes on March and April prizes. While that may take a bit of the sting out of the lost opportunity in South Bend, it’s likely the Cardinal women will be anticipating another crack at the Irish should that opportunity come in Greensboro this March. One step at a time, but eyes on the horizon.

AFTER FURTHER REVIEW: REFLECTING ON LOUISVILLE WBB AT NOTRE DAME

A month ago, if you’d asked me whether I thought a 23 hour day including a nine hour road trip to South Bend, IN was in my future I might have laughed. But here we are, on the raggedy edge. Firstly, one must state the clear fact that Notre Dame is not a university; it’s a brand. Rolling on to that campus is a noteworthy experience whether you like the Irish or not. As an Irish-Catholic boy growing up, Notre Dame gear and weekly Rudy viewings were mandated elements of confirmation classes. So it was impossible not to feel a little tug at the heart string when viewing Touchdown Jesus (aka Word of Life) for the first time in person. But a night at Purcell Pavilion would quickly wash away any remaining shreds of cultural bonds; let’s break it down.

Asia Durr – Maschinenmensch
Asia Durr’s supposed slumps just aren’t cut like the rest, as even during a so-called two game slump she was still averaging 11.5 point and 5 assists a game. When the Cardinals needed an offensive spark against the Irish, Durr was ready. 19 first half points on her way to 29 for the night, but more importantly the contribution Louisville needed to go into the half with a two point lead.

Yeah, About Those Fouls
I’ve refereed high school basketball, so I’m typically more understanding towards the plight of officials than most fans might be. The Notre Dame game pushed well past my threshold. Sure, Asia Durr had 19 points in the first half. But the Irish had 17 points off free throws alone. Perhaps Muffet McGraw knew how to bend the ear or perhaps the referees were out of position. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. It doesn’t matter, as 29 of Notre Dame’s 82 points would come from free throws. The Irish were whistled for 15 fouls to the Cardinal’s 28, thus granting 39 free throw attempts to Louisville’s 16. In a game with a 14 point final margin, it’s difficult to not find correlation. And as a reminder, the bottom video below tweeted by card_sharp72 was ruled an unsportsmanlike foul…on Bionca Dunham.

Mykasa Robinson – Ready For Duty
With six Cardinals in foul trouble to start the second half, it was inevitable that Jeff Walz would have to call on his bench to put in minutes. In the post-game presser Walz talked about Robinson’s dedication and focus in practice, which he predicts should lead to increased playing time going forward. And given her performance on Thursday night, that can’t be a bad thing. Robinson would contribute all six of her points in the fourth quarter along with a critical taken charge late in the game as the Cards fought to cut the lead to two. It’s great to see such a young player step up, especially in an environment such as a nationally televised showdown at first-ranked Notre Dame.

Interior Play – Better Than The Numbers Imply
The Cards were out-rebounded 48-32, with 30 of Notre Dame’s rebounds coming off Cardinal missed shots. Still, I have to give a lot of credit to Sam, Jazmine, Kylee, and Bionca. They played their tails off, and remained aggressive despite mounting foul trouble. This is especially impressive given Notre Dame’s, <ahem>, unique style of play. Muffet McGraw coaches her players to be physical, and it’s clear they know they can get away with it. When Arike Ogunbowale can take a couple of kicks at Arica Carter’s face, and Arica gets reviewed for a possible flagrant foul then you’re obviously on some alternate plane of existence.

Parting Shots

• Purcell Pavilion looked like Kermit the Frog’s lime green vomit bucket
• The Irish fans booed Jeff Walz for calling timeouts and fouling at the end of the game. Apparently the Cards were expected to not try and win.
• It was obvious Muffet McGraw took no shortage of glee in rectifying last year’s embarrassment at the Yum! Center.
• Grissom Air Reserve Base has a cool outdoor aircraft museum. I might go back up just to see that.
• Don’t ever be this person sliding into Sam Fuehring’s DM’s. Just don’t.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The No. 1 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team takes its eight-game winning streak into Sunday's ACC matchup, when the Fighting Irish (15-1, 3-0) host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (9-6, 0-2). Tip off is slated for 1 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, with the game streaming live on ACCN Extra. The Irish will also be hosting their annual toiletries drive for the YWCA. The Irish are an unblemished 6-0 against the Demon Deacons, with all but the first game of the series happening after Notre Dame joined the ACC for the 2013-14 season. In all six games, the Irish have scored at least 86 points.

RPI TOP-25 WINS
With wins over Gonzaga, Drake, Iowa, Marquette and Louisville, the Irish boast five RPI top-25 victories, which doubles the amount of RPI top-25 wins over the next highest Division I team. Notre Dame's five ranked wins stand as the most in Division I as well.

All resulting in Notre Dame boasting the No. 1 SOS and ranked RPI.

POWERING UP AGAINST RANKED FOES
After earning an 82-68 victory vs No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, the Irish moved to 5-1 against top-25 opposition. When looking at the stats you'll see that Notre Dame is averaging more points in those ranked games at an impressive 89.5 ppg, with a scoring margin of +14.7. Furthermore, Ogunbowale, Young and Turner all possess higher scoring averages than their season norms against ranked teams.

TAKING OVER IN THE 2ND HALF VS LOUISVILLE
After sitting with just four points at the half vs No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, Ogunbowale took over the game in the second half where she shot 7-of-9 from the field, 2-for-2 from three and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, finishing with 30 points for the game. Ogunbowale hit a buzzer beating trey at the end of the third and a dagger three with 40 seconds left to push the Irish up by seven. More impressively is the fact that Ogunbowale totaled 12 points in the final 40 seconds of the game.

BEAST ON THE BOARDS
Against No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, Shepard reeled in 15 boards, marking her third game this season with 15 or more rebounds. In the process, Shepard crossed over the 1,000 career rebound mark. Only 13 active players in Division I right now boast over 1,000 career rebounds.

Now since Shepard's first two seasons were at Nebraska, her four-year career totals don't count towards the Notre Dame record book. If it did, Shepard would be just two rebounds shy of breaking the all-time rebounding record set by Ruth Riley (1,007).

Shepard posted a 15-point, 18-rebound, double-double at Marquette (12/22). Her 18 rebounds marked her highest rebound total in an Irish uniform and was just two shy of her career high set at Nebraska. The performance also marked her second 15+ point, 15+ rebound performance of the season. Prior, Shepard achieved a 16-rebound, 15-point double-double at No. 15 DePaul. It was the first 15-point, 15-rebound, performance since Brianna Turner (29/18) at North Carolina on Jan. 15, 2015.

STAT SHEET STUFFER
A stat sheet stuffer game can also be called a 5-5-5 game, in which a player records at least five of three different stats. Against No. 2 Louisville on Jan. 10, Young collected 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, marking her seventh 5-5-5 game on the season -- which is three more than the next highest player in Ogunbowale.

Women's Hoops Hosting YWCA Toiletries Drive on Jan. 13

Encouraging Irish fans to donate non-food items

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – When the No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team returns to the court to take on Wake Forest on Sunday, Jan. 13, the program will also be hosting its annual toiletries drive for the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA).

The YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. Each year nearly 3,400 women and children are served by the YWCA in both Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties.

Notre Dame is encouraging all fans in attendance this Sunday to help make a difference. Below is a list of immediate needs for women and children staying at the YWCA North Central Indiana Shelters:
