ND 60 - Pitt 14..... at the half

ND is just playing at a different speed than Pitt and its showing on both sides of the ball. Not only does our speed let us get open shots with the ball movement, but it also makes our defense more used to it so even the backups move and anticipate better than Pitt can on offense.

Nixon and Prohaska really impressed me with what they can do with the starters. They can add value while also not disrupting the flow of the offense or being out of place on defense. Patterson needs to get better with the starters because I love her potential, but there are still those moments where she looks like she isn't used to playing much and gets kind of panicked or tries to do too much. Her game very much reminds me of Jackie Young though and that is something we don't really have outside of her and Young. Getting her more playing time might not make us better right now, but its an investment that might payoff in the postseason.

Kalani Brown, No. 8 Baylor stun top-ranked UConn 68-57

http://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/25679115/kalani-brown-no-8-baylor-upset-top-ranked-uconn

Mechelle Voepel espnW.com 9:54 PM CT

WACO, Texas -- Baylor coach Kim Mulkey claimed her mind was already focused on her team's next game on Sunday. But nobody else was thinking about that. Baylor had just ended another of No. 1 UConn's crazy-good streaks, and that was the focus of the women's basketball world.

UConn survived one treacherous trip into Big 12 territory earlier this season. But Thursday, the Huskies lost their first regular-season game in more than four years. And it was at the hands of Baylor, the beast of Big 12 women's basketball.

The No. 8 Lady Bears prevailed 68-57 over No. 1 UConn in front a rocking full house of 10,284 fans at Ferrell Center. It was the first time Baylor has defeated the nation's top-ranked team, having gone 0-14 previously counting the NCAA and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women eras.

"Listen, we're all chasing Geno, let's be real," Mulkey said of Huskies coach Geno Auriemma, who has won 11 NCAA titles. "I didn't know it was a first. I don't coach like that. I just want to win the next game."

Winning this one was pretty enormous.

UConn fell in overtime in each of the past two national semifinals, but the Huskies had not lost a regular-season game since falling in overtime to Stanford on Nov. 17, 2014, a string of 126 victories in a row. UConn's last double-digit loss was Feb. 27, 2012, against Notre Dame (lost by 13).

The Huskies' streak of regular-season victories in regulation was even longer: 163 in a row, with the last loss to Baylor on Feb. 18, 2013. That Lady Bears team was the defending national champion at the time, and it featured then-senior Brittney Griner.

This season's Baylor squad has another strong center in Kalani Brown, and the reigning Big 12 player of the year controlled the inside. Brown finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds Thursday, her best game of this season. She was 11-of-17 from the field.

The Lady Bears also got a big game off the bench from freshman sensation NaLyssa Smith, who had 12 points and six rebounds, going 6-of-9 from the field.

Point guard Chloe Jackson, a graduate student playing her first and only season at Baylor, had 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Guard Juicy Landrum had 11 points, including all three of the Lady Bears' 3-pointers.

The Lady Bears' length on defense with the 6-foot-7 Brown, 6-4 Lauren Cox and 6-2 Smith made things difficult for the Huskies, as did the perimeter defense led by DiDi Richards, who spent a lot of time guarding UConn leading scorer Katie Lou Samuelson.

The Huskies shot 29.4 percent from the field (20-of-68), their worst mark in the past 20 seasons. That included 11 3-pointers; UConn made just 9 of 36 attempts from 2-point range. This was UConn's lowest point total of the season, and its lowest since scoring 55 in a victory over Central Florida on Feb. 7, 2018.

Game Recap: Women's Basketball | 1/3/2019 10:12:00 PM

No. 2 Irish Pounce on Pitt Early in 100-44 Win
Defense posts season best in points allowed & opponent shooting percentage

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 2 Notre Dame women's basketball team made an emphatic statement in its ACC opener, defeating Pittsburgh, 100-44, inside Purcell Pavilion on Thursday night. The Fighting Irish (13-1) defense recorded its best game of the year, posting new season lows in points allowed and opponent shooting percentage (.266).

Marina Mabrey, who exited the game after the third quarter, finished with a game high 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a 4-for-9 performance from three-point range.

Furthermore, Thursday marked the second straight game in which a milestone was achieved after Jackie Young joined the 1,000 career point club, knocking in 16 points tonight. Young becomes the 40th member of the club, as all five starters now boast over 1,000 career points.

"It's great to get out the first game (of conference play) and really set a tone for the ACC," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "We're going to take it one game at a time, but it's important for us to play like that every game."

How It Happened
Notre Dame's defense undoubtedly left its mark in the first half, limiting Pittsburgh to just 14 points. It marked the program's second-fewest first half points allowed in an ACC contest, previously allowing just 11 against Virginia Tech in 2016.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The No. 2 University of Notre Dame women's basketball teams embarks on its first road trip of the conference season this weekend, when the Irish (13-1, 1-0) head to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech (11-3, 1-0). Tip-off is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m. ET, inside McCamish Pavilion. The game will air live across Regional Sports Networks, with the full listing found here. http://www.raycomsports.com/theacc/grids/printRSNMatch/1171

Notre Dame leads the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets, 10-0, with a 4-0 record inside McCamish Pavilion. Last year in Atlanta, the Irish walked away with a 77-54 victory.

SETTING THE TONE FOR ACC PLAY
In Notre Dame's ACC opener vs Pittsburgh, the Irish routed the Panthers, 100-44. The Irish allowed just 14 first half points, marking the second fewest scored by an ACC opponent since joining the league at the start of the 2013-14 season (the fewest was 11 first half points by Virginia Tech in 2016). In addition, the Irish defense posted new season lows in points allowed and opponent shooting percentage (.266).

REACHING THE CENTURY MARK
Speaking of the win over Pitt, it marked the fifth time in which the Irish reached triple digits this season:
100-44 win vs Pitt on Jan. 3
103-53 win vs Binghamton on Dec. 16
105-71 win vs No. 14 Iowa on Nov. 29
101-77 win vs No. 15 DePaul on Nov. 17
103-58 win vs Harvard on Nov. 9

MABREY HEATING UP
After leading the team in scoring with her 20-point, seven-assist performance vs Pitt on Jan. 3, Marina Mabrey continues to heat up for the Irish. Over the last five games, Mabrey has averaged 16.6 points on 59.6 percent, including a 13-for-26 mark from three-point range.

Mabrey has also dished out 32 assists over the last five games, averaging 6.4 assists in that span. She now averages 4.6 assists/game, which ranks second on the team.

Lastly, Mabrey has recorded all three of her 20-point scoring games over the last five games.

YOUNG AMONG NATION'S BEST FOR GUARD SHOOTING PERCENTAGE
Junior guard Jackie Young has been highly efficient from the field this season, raising her shooting percentage to 56.3 percent. That number ranks 35th nationally, but more impressively, fourth among guards:
1. Villanova's Mary Gedaka - 67.0
2. Ohio's Cierra Hooks - 57.5
3. Oregon State's Mikayla Pivec - 56.4
4. Notre Dame's Jackie Young - 56.3

GAME OF RUNS
Basketball is a game of runs, and the Irish have achieved success by not allowing a single 10-0 run by any opponent yet this season. In fact, Notre Dame leads its opposition, 16-0, in that category. Notre Dame first posted its longest run of the season vs Binghamton on Dec. 16 with 21 straight.

Then the Irish matched it twice vs Pitt on Jan. 3, recording 21-0 runs in both the first and second quarters.

THE 40TH MEMBER OF THE 1,000 POINT CLUB
On Jan. 3, Young became the 40th member of the program's 1,000 career point club, scoring 16 points against Pitt. Now that Young has reached the milestone, Notre Dame and Marquette are the only two schools in the country with five starters over 1,000 career points.

IRISH HOT SHOOTING STREAK
Before Thursday's ACC opener vs Pitt on Jan. 3, the Irish had recorded four straight games in which they shot over 55 percent from the field: 55.7 percent vs Binghamton, 69.8 percent vs WKU, 59.7 percent vs Marquette and 61.4 percent vs Lehigh. Though the streak came to an end vs Pitt, the Irish still shot 52.3 percent in the game and continue to raise their shooting average on the season along with its associated national ranking.

Over the last five games, Notre Dame has raised its shooting percentage from .489 to .524, which ranks second in the country.
