The girls were unrelentingly solid again, and almost no women's BBall teams are --- this is the main part of what Muffet calls "mental toughness." We just stay indomitable and others slowly crack here and there, and the lead grows until the end.

I've been tough on Arike and don't apologize for the reasons that I (looking at her play in the coaching context of ideal basketball) have felt that, but one must admit that she gives ND the missing ingredient of flat-out scoring, and scoring when the play has broken down. (Our other missing ingredient is a rim-protector who can't be thugged out of there --- Brianna Turner is "part" of that missing link.)

Arike should be applauded at the same time she humbly thanks Marina, Jackie, and Kat for doing all the rest of the offensive and defensive game that allows ND to look like a smoothly functioning team. Arike is on the perfect team for her. She can be a sometimes-malfunctioning wild talent while being the super valuable scorer, and forced to show some discipline because of her magnificently disciplined colleagues. If she was at UConn I'll bet she would not have seen the floor, considering how rough that coach is on error-prone players --- and he has the luxury of not needing any one person (other than someone like Brianna Stewart anyway.)

So, great, Arike, congratulations on your very essential contribution to this team. Bomb away mightily. Your girlfriends will create the opportunity-rich structure within which your amazing offensive talents can max out. When (if) you win ACC Player-of-the-year, scratch the names of the others onto the nameplate. This is an All-Together thing that is happening here.

And Coach --- you are magnificent.

No. 5 Irish Claim Fifth Straight ACC Regular Season Title :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Through all the adversity and challenges overcome, the No. 5 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team are ACC regular season champions for the fifth consecutive year. The Irish (27-2, 15-1) picked up its nation-leading eighth ranked win on Sunday after defeating No. 21 NC State (22-6, 11-4) by the score of, 86-67, inside Purcell Pavilion.

"That's the first deep breath I've taken since November 1," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "I'm just so proud of this team and what they've overcome. We just kept losing people throughout the year and we never put our head down and never felt sorry for ourselves. They just came back to work every single day. They stepped up individually and as a team.

"They handled the adversity and that's the kind of thing that we want to teach them. That's what sports does for you - it teaches you a lot of life lessons and handling adversity is definitely one of them. I couldn't be prouder of any team. This is definitely the most rewarding championship I think we've had."

How It Happened

An Ogunbowale three-pointer kick-started a 7-0 run at 8:19 in the first, in which seniors Kathryn Westbeld and Kristina Nelson got in on the action, with the latter making her first career start. A Marina Mabrey three in the final minute gave the Irish a 17-16 edge over the Wolfpack at the end of the period.

The Irish defense forced four turnovers in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the second quarter to jumpstart an 8-1 run, in which Notre Dame went 4-for-4 from the field. Ogunbowale supplied the offensive power in the period, exploding with 10 points, including seven straight for the Irish, to finish with 13 at the half. As a result, Notre Dame boasted a 39-31 advantage over NC State at the break.

A 12-6 NC State start to the third quarter cut Notre Dame's lead to just two points at 45-43, but an Ogunbowale three-pointer halted the Wolfpack rally and ignited a strong 21-6 Irish push over the remainder of the period. Westbeld tallied six straight points from 4:34 to 3:21, followed by a Mabrey trey at 1:42 and Ogunbowale's fourth three-pointer of the game right before the buzzer to give the Irish a 66-49 advantage.

The final quarter opened with a 7-0 Irish start that carried the momentum all the way into the 86-67 final and an ACC regular season title.

Co-Players of the Game

Jackie Young and Arike Ogunbowale combined for 43 points this afternoon. Young led with 22 points, just one shy of her career high, on 8-of-11 shooting, to go with her six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Meanwhile, Ogunbowale recorded her ACC leading 19th game of 20-plus points with 21 today.

Stat of the Game

Notre Dame earned its seventh straight regular season conference title (last two in Big East) with today's victory over NC State, and fifth consecutive since joining the ACC. Seven straight regular season titles is the third highest active streak in the country, only behind Baylor (8) and Green Bay (20). Five straight ACC regular season titles is now one shy of the all-time mark set by Virginia from 1991-96.

Notes

Notre Dame leads the all-time series vs NC State, 6-1, with a 2-0 mark at home.
Today's win clinched Notre Dame's fifth straight ACC regular season title and seventh consecutive regular season league title when dating back to the final two years in the Big East. The seven straight is the third best active streak in the country.
The win over No. 21 NC State was Notre Dame's eighth against a ranked opponent this year, which ties UConn for the most in the country.
Today's victory was also Notre Dame's 23rd straight at home and 50th straight win at home over a conference opponent.
Also marked Notre Dame's 13th win against a RPI Top-50 opponent, which leads the nation.
After five seasons in the ACC, Notre Dame is now 77-3 in league play.
The Irish celebrated Senior Day today, honoring Lili Thompson, Mychal Johnson, Kristina Nelson and Kathryn Westbeld before the game.
Ogunbowale earned her ACC leading 19th game of 20 or more points with 21 on 8-of-19 shooting today. Ogunbowale tied her season high with four made three-pointers.
Young earned her eighth game of 20-plus points with 22 this afternoon on an impressive 8-of-11 shooting, including a 6-for-7 day from the free-throw line.
Westbeld tallied her ninth game in double figures with 16 points, tying her career high of eight made field goals.
Mabrey earned her 22nd game in double figures with 17 points. Mabrey went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Up Next

The Irish will look to make it a fifth straight ACC regular season and tournament title sweep, when they head to Greensboro for the ACC Tournament. Notre Dame received the double bye and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament, with their first game taking place in the quarterfinal round on Friday, March 2, at 6 p.m. ET.

Ogunbowale Named an Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Finalist :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Another day, another finalist nomination for Notre Dame junior guard Arike Ogunbowale. On Tuesday morning, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced the five finalists for the 2018 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.

The annual award in its inaugural year recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. This year's finalists include Ogunbowale, Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), Asia Durr (Louisville), Victoria Vivans (Mississippi St.) and Kitija Laksa (South Florida).

Ogunbowale has not only led the No. 1 rated RPI conference in the ACC in scoring with her 20.3 points per game, but has done so against the No. 1 strength of schedule as well, now up to 19 games of 20-plus points on the year. Versus the 10-ranked opponents the Irish have faced this season, Ogunbowale's scoring average hasn't wavered, averaging 19.4 points on 42.1 percent shooting to go with her 5.1 rebounds.

In addition, Ogunbowale has played a pivotal role in the No. 5 Irish securing their fifth straight ACC regular season championship, and will look to set an ACC record this weekend when they seek their fifth straight regular season and tournament title sweep.

In March, the five finalists will be presented to Ms. Drysdale and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2018 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans are encouraged to visit Hoophall Awards to cast their votes March 2-23.

The winner of the 2018 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award will be announced during ESPN2's telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women's Final Four in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, March 30. The award will then be presented to the student-athlete on Saturday, March 31 at a new awards reception presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame and the WBCA and held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Three Irish Land on All-ACC List :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics

Feb. 27, 2018

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The end of the regular season means awards time as the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its women's basketball all-conference teams on Tuesday. Three Notre Dame juniors in Arike Ogunbowale, Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey were recognized by the Blue-Ribbon Panel and the Coaches Panel for the first time in their careers.

Both Ogunbowale and Shepard were named Blue-Ribbon Panel First Team All-ACC selections, while Mabrey was placed on the Second Team. Meanwhile, on the Coaches Panel, Mabrey was given the First Team nod. All-in-all, it marks the third time in five years in the league that Notre Dame boasted three all-conference honorees.

Ogunbowale has been the model of consistency, recording double-digit points in all but one game this season. Ogunbowale, who notched eight games of 20-plus points entering the year, has exploded with an ACC-leading 19 this season, including a career high tying 32 points at Michigan on Nov. 29.

The Milwaukee native has steadily increased her scoring average every year, averaging 11.4 points as freshman, then 15.9 points as a sophomore and now 20.3 points as a junior, which just so happens to lead the ACC as well.

Next, Shepard has made an immediate impact with the Irish, ranking second on the team in scoring with her 14.8 points per game. Shepard has converted 55.3 percent of her shots this season, which ranks fourth in the conference and 32nd in the nation.

Shepard has achieved nine double-doubles, which is tied for the seventh most in the ACC, and is two double-doubles away from cracking the top-8 in program history for the most in a single season. Shepard has led the Irish in rebounding 16 times, as her 7.8 rebounds per game ranks seventh in the ACC.

Rounding out the trio is Mabrey, who finished the regular season ranked in the top-15 in the second most statistical categories of any player in the ACC. Mabrey averaged 14.5 points in league play where she also boosted both her assist and steal averages. The junior's 4.8 assists ranked fourth in the ACC while her 2.6 steals ranked second.

Ogunbowale, Shepard, Mabrey and the rest of the Irish begin their quest for a fifth straight ACC Tournament title on Friday, March 2, at 6 p.m. ET. If successful, a fifth straight ACC regular season and conference tournament title sweep would set a new ACC record.

OTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team has one goal in mind heading into the ACC Tournament this weekend – make history. The No. 2 seeded Irish, whose ACC Tournament kicks off Friday, March 2, at 6 p.m. ET, could become the first school to sweep the ACC regular season and conference tournament titles in five consecutive years.

Friday’s quarterfinal matchup will be broadcasted across Regional Sports Networks (RSN) along with ACCN Extra (Subject to blackout). For a full list of networks, click here. The Irish will play the winner of today’s Virginia vs Georgia Tech matchup.

In addition, Notre Dame’s potential semifinal round contest would take place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ESPNU, while the ACC title game will commence at 2 p.m. on Sunday on ESPN2.

LOOK BACK AT 2017 ACC TOURNAMENT
Notre Dame’s path to the 2017 ACC Tournament title started with a 76-59 win over Virginia in the quarterfinals, followed by an 84-73 win over Louisville. The Irish then claimed the tournament crown with an 84-61 win over Duke. The Irish averaged 81.3 points on 49.2 percent shooting in the tournament. Both Arike Ogunbowale (17.7 ppg) and Marina Mabrey (17.3) averaged over 17 points in the three games and were named to the All-ACC Tournament Team.

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT SUCCESS
A fifth straight ACC Tournament title would tie Duke for the all-time mark. The Irish are thus 12-0 in ACC Tournament games, as they chip away at another Duke record – 17 consecutive conference tournament victories.

When dating back to the final year in the Big East, the Irish conference tournament winning streak gets extended to 15-0. Overall, Notre Dame is 48-19 in conference tournament play, which includes their time in the MCC (now Horizon League), Big East and the ACC.

The Irish won their 10th overall conference tournament championship in 2017 and fifth in a row when counting the 2013 Big East Tournament. Nationally, only Notre Dame and Albany (America East) have won their conference tournament each of the past five years.

2017 also marked the eighth consecutive year the Irish have played for a conference tournament championship.

ACC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS
Since Notre Dame and Louisville tied atop the ACC standings at 15-1, both the Irish and Cardinals were named 2018 ACC regular season champions. For Notre Dame, it marked their fifth straight ACC regular season title and seventh straight when dating back to the final two years of the Big East. Seven straight regular season titles is the third highest active streak in the country, only behind Baylor (8) and Green Bay (20). Five straight ACC regular season titles is one shy of the all-time mark set by Virginia from 1991-96.

THREE IRISH NAMED ALL-ACC
For the first time in their respective careers, juniors Arike Ogunbowale, Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey were all named All-ACC honorees. Ogunbowale was unanimously announced to the First Team on both the Blue Ribbon Panel and the Coaches Panel. Shepard was placed on the Blue Ribbon’s First Team but Coaches Second Team, while Mabrey was the exact opposite on the two panels.

All-in-all, it marked the third time in five years in the league that Notre Dame boasted three all-conference honorees. In addition, Notre Dame’s three honorees were the most of any ACC school.

ARIKE ACCOLADES
The last week of February has been good to Arike Ogunbowale. More impressive than her First Team All-ACC nod was the fact that Ogunbowale was named an Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Finalist, recognizing the top-five shooting guards in the country. Also in the running are Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), Asia Durr (Louisville), Victoria Vivans (Mississippi St.) and Kitija Laksa (South Florida).

Earlier, Ogunbowale was also named as 1-of-10 semifinalists for the Citizen Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year. Four national finalists will be announced on March 16.
