Another "impossible" gut-it-out-all-game-just-getting-stronger performance. Someone on campus must have a bio-engineering lab and the girls are the volunteer subjects.

Strong Second Half Pushes No. 5 Irish to 85-69 Victory over Georgia Tech :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The No. 5 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team utilized a strong second half surge to claim an 85-69 victory over Georgia Tech inside Purcell Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.

Arike Ogunbowale (27 points) and Jackie Young (22 points) each recorded 20-point games, combining for 49 points for the Irish (23-2, 11-1). The victory over the Yellow Jackets (15-11, 4-9) marked Notre Dame’s eighth straight on the season and 21st straight victory at home.

"It was a really good second half. I found it interesting that it was a reverse of what happened at Georgia Tech," Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Women's Basketball Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. "In the second half, we buckled down defensively and that was a big key.”

How It Happened
Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale got the offense started in the first quarter, scoring the team’s first eight points. Jessica Shepard picked up right where she left off, scoring the next six points for the Irish, as Notre Dame claimed a 14-9 lead. By the end of the first, the Irish had recorded nine made field goals on eight assists, leading the Yellow Jackets, 21-17.

With a few minutes left in the second quarter, Georgia Tech staged a rally with an 8-0 run that handed the visiting team a 36-33 lead. However, Kathryn Westbeld scored six of the last eight points for the Irish, including a buzzer-beating lay-up that knotted the game at 39-all at the half. Westbeld and Jackie Young combined for 16 of the team’s 18 points in the quarter.

The Irish, who scored the last four points of the half, started the third quarter on a 6-0 run, receiving points from Ogunbowale, Shepard and Young. However, Georgia Tech began to creep back into the game, cutting the deficit to 54-52 at the 4:03 mark. That’s when the Irish found another gear, recording a 10-0 run in under a two-minute span, ultimately taking a 64-54 lead into the final period.

One minute into the fourth, the Irish surged with yet another double-digit run, scoring 13 straight points to jump out to a 79-56 lead. Later, an Ogunbowale three-pointer put the finishing touch on the game, as Notre Dame earned the 85-69 victory.

Player of the Game
Young tied her career high in made field goals, shooting an impressive 10-of-13 from the field, finishing with 22 points on the afternoon, one shy of her career high. Young also secured a season high five steals and dished out seven assists, which is one shy of her career high.

Stat of the Game
The Irish tallied 22 assists in today’s victory, and have now recorded 20-plus assists in four of the last six games. Furthermore, for five straight games, the Irish have tallied double-digit fast break points, finishing with 18 this afternoon.

Notes
  • Notre Dame remains unblemished against Georgia Tech, now 10-0 all time, with a 5-0 mark at home.
  • Irish are 73-3 all-time in ACC play.
  • Irish have won 21-straight inside Purcell Pavilion.

Second-Half Adjustment
Georgia Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph credited Notre Dame’s second half adjustment against its full-court pressure by getting the ball into the hands of Young and Ogunbowale — while stationing Ogunbowale on the back side that presented her with 2-on-1 advantage off some diagonal feeds.

Ogunbowale then would either drive to the basket aggressively (she was 8-of-9 from the foul line while drawing fouls) or dish off to the open woman (she had five assists). That also forced Georgia Tech to back off more from the press — the Irish went from 15 turnovers in the first half to four in the second — and go more to zone, which played into the Irish hands.

“That’s our game,” McGraw said of speeding up the game with her explosive guards. “We want to run … we definitely want to advance the ball as much as we can and not run as much offense as we can.”

Notre Dame goes from sloppy to superb against Georgia Tech

More uncharacteristically, she (Young) and Ogunbowale paired to pile up nine first-half turnovers as the pressing Yellow Jackets fought to a 39-39 tie by the break.

Young and Ogunbowale’s combined second-half turnover count: Zero.

I think we have flashes of brilliance. I mean, I don’t know how I would guard us sometimes when we’re really operating on all cylinders and moving the ball. We had a couple times on press offense that the ball never hit the floor and we got a layup, so there are some things we are doing that are really, really good, but I always think there’s room for improvement.

I did not expect ND to pass UL. They both have 2 losses but ND looked bad against UL. Margin is only 5 points but it's enough for 4th!

Game 26: #5/4 Notre Dame (23-2, 11-1) at (NR/RV) Virginia (16-9, 9-3)
When: Thursday, Feb. 15 | 7:00 pm ET
Where: Charlottesville, Va. | John Paul Jones Arena (14,593)
Watch: ACCN Extra Stream
Listen: Pulse FM 96.9 / 92.1 | Bob Nagle (PxP)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With the regular season winding down, the No. 5 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team begins its final week on the road during the regular season, starting with a trip to Charlottesville for a Thursday night matchup at Virginia. Tip-off against the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m. ET, streaming live on ACCN Extra.

The Irish (23-2, 11-1), who sit atop the conference standings alongside Louisville, is vying for its seventh consecutive regular season title and fifth straight in the ACC.

HISTORY VS VIRGINIA
Since joining the ACC, the Irish have not lost to Virginia (16-9, 9-3), boasting a 5-0 record. All-time the Irish are 5-2, with a 2-1 mark in Charlottesville.

Notre Dame and Virginia squared off twice last year, first at home that resulted in an 82-74 victory. Both Mabrey and Ogunbowale recorded 20-plus point efforts with 26 points and 21 points, respectively. The two sides met once more in the ACC Tournament, where the Irish won 76-59. That time, Ogunbowale poured in 19 points, while Mabrey added 13 points.

WHO’S HOT
In her final season, senior Kat Westbeld is leaving nothing on the table. Just look at the last four games - Westbeld has shot 76.0 percent (19-of-25), averaging 11.0 points and 6.8 rebounds. In addition, the Ohio native currently ranks first in ACC play in shooting percentage (.623) and second overall (.631).

SHEPARD’S ACTIVE CAREER NUMBERS
In midst of a stellar first year at Notre Dame, junior Jessica Shepard continues to solidify herself among the best in the country. Shepard’s 17.6 points per game career scoring average ranks 13th among all active Division I players. In addition, her 8.9 career rebounding average ranks 13th while her 34 career double-doubles ranks 20th.

SCORE WITH THE BEST OF THEM
Notre Dame continues to climb the charts in the major offensive statistics. The Irish currently rank fourth in the nation in shooting percentage, converting 49.6 percent of their shots. If the season ended today, that number would tie for the ninth best in program history. Points wise, the Irish are averaging an impressive 84.8 points per game, which ranks fifth in the country. That number would stand as the second best in school history, checking in behind the 2013-14 squad’s 86.1 ppg.

BLINK AND YOU MISS IT
Notre Dame enjoys a quick strike transition offense which has been exemplified over the last five games. In that stretch, the Irish have tallied double-digit fast break points in all five games, including 18 vs both No. 8 Florida State and Georgia Tech, and a season high of 19 at No. 19 Duke.

A DEFENSIVE FRONT
The Irish continue to up the defensive ante. In fact, Notre Dame’s defense has forced a total of 169 turnovers that resulted in a combined 192 points over the last eight games. That’s good for an average of 21.1 forced turnovers and 24.0 points off said turnovers. In addition, the Irish have forced over 20 turnovers in five of the last eight games.

Sweet dish by Arike. Drove the baseline and when she got underneath the basket she whipped it out to Mabrey just atop the key for a trey!

S.Car trails UGA by 2 at the half.

UL leads BC by 5 at the half. They were down by 11 earlier in the game. BC won the opening quarter 23-12. UL flipped that and then some winning the 2nd Q. 20 to 4. That's 4 as in two buckets.
