i can't wait to SEE an actual game to see for myself what goes on with this bunch. Questions which arise:

A). We only trying FOUR 3pointers? NONE by Marina? Almost impossible.
B). EIGHT assists? I know that Lindsay's gone, but ...........
C). No substitute guards available ...... yow.
D). Only TWO blocks. (and we the bigger team.)
E). Mediocre perimeter defense (If the opponent makes GREATER than one third of their threes it's like a better than 50% ordinary shooter --- so we were "not too hot, though not a disaster.")
F). Arike? Back to being the Bomber Ego-Queen?

Well, it's a win, and God Bless Jackie Young.

Didn't see any of the game, but that's a great win on the road this early in season vs, solid OSU team.
Hats off to all.

I didn't see the game either. Tuned in the audio in the 2nd Q. I'm gonna respond to your comments out of order to make more sense.

D. Only TWO blocks (and we the bigger team) We were the smaller team. OSU has:
6'-5" center MARIE GÜLICH from Germany
6'-8"center, JOANNA GRYMEK from Poland.
6'-3" Forward TAYA COROSDALE,
6'-2" Forward JANESSA THROPAY
6'-1"Guard/Forward MADISON WASHINGTON
6'-2" Guard KATIE MCWILLIAMS
6-'0" Guard KAT TUDOR
5'-10" Guard MIKAYLA PIVEC
5'-8" Guard TAYLOR KALMER

and assorted other mostly small players. But they have BIGS! The 9 above played against ND. Their starters are highlighted above in BOLD. They were 6-5, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. From the bench came 6-8, 6-3, 6-2, 5-8.

That's a BIG lineup. Oh and the 5-10 G Pivec is Double Double material in addition to dishing assists. She played 35 minutes scoring 19, (7 of 13 treys!), 8 Rebs (4 Offensive), and 6 Assists. Gulich played 31 and just missed a Double Double, 10/9.

All 9 of their players had at least 1 Reb. Six of them shared the 13 ORebs.

In the first half ND trailed by 5-7 points. They lost the 1Q 20-15 and Lili hit a trey near the buzzer to cut an 8 point gap. We closed some in the second period but it seemed each time we had a run, they answered with a run. Shepard had an abysmal first half shooting as did Arike. I suspect their height was causing us to alter trajectory both inside and outside. Tough to shot 3's if you're being guarded by a player 5 inches taller. One of the short highlight clips showed Arike shooting an ice cream cone over one of OSU's BIG bigs.

As I didn't see the game only highlights I can't comment on the offense we ran. The stats make it seem more 1 on 1 playground ball than Princeton crisp passing. For example Arike took 18 shots making 5 but had NO assists. Only guard without an assist.

We obviously made halftime adjustments in the 3Q as Jackie got smoking. I'm guessing slashing attacks as again no TV. Jackie had a career stat night fueling a couple of ND runs. The rebounding changed dramatically in the 3Q as well. OSU dominated the boards in the 1st half. I think I posted the halftime stats during the game. ND slowly got the edge in the 3rd and flat out dominated the boards in the 2nd half. ND won the 2nd half boards 23-12. Better conditioning? Better boxing out? Again, no video.

Kat who wasn't expected to be playing early in the season played 21 minutes. Only scored 2 points but had 6 Rebs.

ND shot 32% from the floor in the first half and 53% in the second. OSU was 44%/39%. OSU hit 43% of their treys in the first half and only 30% in the second.

I found an Oregon article on the game , linked below. I also linked the ND stats and Play by Play.

From comments I've read the refs, "let them play" allegedly a lot of elbows were thrown and as we discussed on more than one occasion that's not Muffet's style of play. Their were only 25 fouls called in the game, 11 on ND. Few of the PFs were on the BIGs.

I think that description covers most of your comments/questions. As for Marina shooting treys, she and the team had a bad game shooting treys last game. I suspect limited early success from the arc coupled with OSU early hot hand took ND out of their game and it took 25 minutes or so to get it back.

Hmmm.... very interesting. OSU is huge --- the box score and play-by-play indicate that they are much less agile than we are, but this Pivec is a tremendous player. Without Turner threatening the inside offensively, and probably without such an effective high-post entry passer as Kat, this OSU bunch could probably edge much further out on the arc to defend threes --- my blind guess anyway.

In the first half we had that "typical" away game where you just can't get started --- and got 8 points down. Muffet subbed back and forth and the "ship" stabilized but could not cut into the lead. It would be interesting to know if we out-adjusted them in the second half (i.e. Muffet), or out efforted them (i.e. Jackie), or were just better conditioned.

Some of this has to be effort (possibly conditioning playing into that.) We went up in shooting and they down. We went way up in rebounding and they down. Our girls may have more of the Heart of a Champion than they.

I missed the first quarter but watched the rest of the game. The problem we had on defense was the fact that they had both height and outside shooting and we got caught in the middle too often. We would let them get good positioning in the post and then be forced to double so it wasn't an easy hook shot, but then the bigs would get some nice passes out to the arc where they had some great passing.

Honestly, they executed their offense to perfection and our defense was at a loss for something to stop it. They started to slow them down in the third when they realized that the refs weren't calling anything so they could be more physical and really wrestle for some rebounds. The guards, especially Marina, started being more aggressive on the guards trying to strip the ball. Once she did that they couldn't get the good entrance passes to the post, so we didn't have to double, so they didn't get open threes.

OSU got back into a groove on offense when they started to push the ball in transition because we kept crowding the post and losing players behind the arc in transition so they hit us with a bunch of transition threes. At that point though, if they didn't get the transition shot, they were pretty well locked down. I think they also got frustrated when we got back into the lead and they started pressing a little bit.

They did get a good amount of offensive rebound too because they were taller and we were not good at boxing out or reading the rebound. There were way too many threes shot where you have to know there will be either a long rebound or a high one that will let you get underneath it, but we just ran straight under the basket without even boxing out. I feel like a lot of that is because so many of our girls are usually just better than the opponent so they don't have to be fundamentally sound on rebounding, but we could have some problems with it later in the year.

For our offense I think we played way to much one-on-one to start. With our bigs crowding the post and OSU having the height advantage and the refs letting a physical game be played, we got killed on offense to start. They got a ton of blocks or near blocks that should have been fouls and they dared our wings to shoot the three.

I really do not love our offense. So much of it seems to be our wings trying to drive to score, but we also great at free throws, so if I were an opposing coach I would throw a ton of bigs at us and tell them to be physical. We need some way to counter opponents sagging off the arc and preparing for the drive.

We only got our offense going when we started pushing the pace in transition. I think we need to do this a lot more often because it causes teams to be back on their heels a ton more and can create the confusion we need to get a guard open.

Overall, not a horrible game. It wasn't our best effort, but we showed we can still beat a ranked team even on an off night. I think this team is going to get exponentially better throughout the year and hopefully they can really start to peak at the end of the year. I wish we had another guard to rotate and not having Mychal's defensive presense is going to hurt, but I like this team. I think Arike is really starting to take a leadership role and I think the team will take her and Marina's identity of gritty, hard nosed basketball.

No. 6/5 Notre Dame Outlasts No. 18/17 Oregon State, 72-67
Jackie Young scores career-high 21 points including 17 points in the second half

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 6/5 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team (3-0) topped No. 18/17 Oregon State (2-1), 72-67, in nice come-from-behind fashion on Sunday.

The Fighting Irish overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half, and a sharp-shooting Oregon State team, who knocked down nine three-pointers in front of a raucous crowd at Gill Coliseum.

"I'm really proud of this team right now," Karen and Kevin Keyes Women's Basketball Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. "After as poorly as we played in the first half, to come back in the second half and really work on the defensive end was great. I thought we did a much better job of rebounding in the second half, took care of the ball and got the shots we wanted."

How It Happened

Notre Dame struggled to find a rhythm in the first half as the Beavers jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the first 4:02. A Lili Thompson three-pointer in the final seconds of the period pulled the Irish to within five at 20-15.

Midway through the second quarter, Notre Dame converted four of its next five shot attempts, pulling within three at 30-27 at the 4:03 mark, but Oregon State responded with a 7-2 run to end the half up 37-29.

Trailing 44-33 after OSU's seventh three-pointer of the game in the third period, Jackie Young sparked an 11-2 run, in which she scored seven of the 11 points, pulling Notre Dame within two at 46-44 at 5:10. Notre Dame went on to convert eight of its next nine from the floor, capped by an Ogunbowale three-pointer at 2:21, giving the Irish its first lead of the game at 51-48.

Next, Young contributed critical back-to-back layups with under two minutes left in the game to bring the Irish lead to 70-65. Up, 70-67 with 12 seconds left, Arike Ogunbowale got an offensive rebound then later drew the foul. The junior made two free throws to give Notre Dame insurance points, ultimately securing the 72-67 victory.

Player of the Game
Young led the Irish offensively, collecting a career-high 21 points, while reeling in eight rebounds.

Eight of Young's 21 points came in the fourth quarter, when Notre Dame outscored Oregon State 21-15. Ultimately Young was 1-for-4 from the field at halftime before coming out strong with 17 points in the second half.

Stat of the Game
Since the start of the 2013-14 season, Oregon State is 62-7 at home. Of those seven losses, now two were caused by Notre Dame.

Notes
Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 3-0, over Oregon State, including a 2-0 mark in Corvallis.
Both Young and Ogunbowale finished with double-digit points for the third straight game.
Irish outscored the Beavers, 48-26, in the paint. Notre Dame also earned 22 second chance points, out-rebounding OSU, 47-36.
All seven lead changes and three ties occurred in the second half.
Just one team (Marquette) scored over 70 points against OSU's defense last season. Notre Dame scored 72 on Sunday.

Up Next
The Irish road tour rolls into Estero, Fla., for the Gulf Coast Showcase starting Friday, Nov. 24. Notre Dame will play three games in three days in the eight-team bracketed tournament, starting with ETSU.

If the girls can't figure out how to shoot, both beyond the arc and at the line, I feel like we might be looking at another early exit in March.

EDIT: It looks like most of the missed free throws were from Shepherd and Patterson. That't not as worrying to me because you can hide those players in the tournament if it comes down to teams fouling us to get back in it. I still do wish we were better beyond the arc, but I can live with it especially with how good our bigs look.

Unlike Oregon St, ETSU is NOT a big team. They have 4 players over 6-0, one at 6-2, two at 6-1, and one at 6.

They started two guards and three forwards. The Gs were Tarter, 5-6, and Haynes-Overton, 5-5. The Fs were Dean, 6-1, Snowden, 6-0, and Schurr, 5-10.

Schurr fouled out having only played a total of 15 minutes. She did not score but had 5 rebs against the taller Irish. Snowden picked up 4 fouls and only played 17 minutes, 4 pts, 3 rebs. The other F, Dean, played 25, 5 pts, 2 rebs. Their starting Front Line averaged 19 minutes, 3 pts, and 3 rebs.

Their leading scorer was Copney, a 5-11 G, who had 12 pts, 7 rebs in 28 minutes off the bench. Their 5-5 G, Haynes-Overton was their leading rebounder with 8.

No. 6/6 Notre Dame Stymies ETSU in 77-46 Win
Fighting Irish put on defensive clinic, advance to semifinal of Gulf Coast Showcase

Nov. 24, 2017

ESTERO, Fla. - The No. 6/6 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team topped ETSU, 77-46, in its first of three games at the Gulf Coast Showcase on Friday at Germain Arena, advancing to Saturday’s semifinal round.

Notre Dame (4-0) limited ETSU (4-2) to a season-low 46 points, winning its third straight away from home during its seven-game road swing.

"I thought Arike (Ogunbowale) played well, Jackie (Young) gave us a lift and Jess (Shepard) rebounded well," Karen and Kevin Keyes Women's Basketball Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. "We have to play smarter. We have to be able to pass the ball, see the open woman - really the basics. We have to get better."

How It Happened
Jessica Shepard led Notre Dame’s first-quarter attack, tallying seven points and helping the Irish defense limit ETSU to one field goal in the opening 4:29.

Defensively, Notre Dame held ETSU to 1-for-9 from the field over a six-minute span in the second quarter. Shepard and Arike Ogunbowale combined to shoot 8-for-11 in the first half, recording half of Notre Dame’s points and building a 44-28 halftime advantage.

ETSU pulled to within 11 points at 46-35 in the third quarter, but Notre Dame responded with back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays from Marina Mabrey and Danielle Patterson to take a 59-37 lead after three.

Mikayla Vaughn’s six points highlighted a dominant fourth quarter, which saw the Irish outscore ETSU 18-9 and ultimately secure the 77-46 victory.

Player of the Game
Arike Ogunbowale recorded her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career against ETSU. Ogunbowale totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds in the Irish victory.

Stat of the Game
ETSU entered the game averaging 72.2 points per game and were held to 46 points by Notre Dame. It marked the fewest points Notre Dame has allowed to a single opponent this season.

Other Notables
Shepard, who entered the game averaging 7.3 points in the first quarter this season, hit the seven-point mark in tonight’s matchup versus ETSU.

Notre Dame held its opponent to the lowest first quarter total so far this season, limiting ETSU to 12 points.

Shepard recorded her third double-double of the season and 28th of her career. The junior finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Danielle Patterson earned a career best nine rebounds coming off the bench tonight.

ETSU’s Tianna Tarter, who averages 16.4 points per game, was limited to eight points in the game.

Up Next
To reach the Gulf Coast Showcase championship contest, Notre Dame will have to go through a familiar foe in No. 17/16 South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m. ET. Earlier this evening, the Bulls defeated Washington State, 82-45.

Irish up by 3 at the half over South Carolina. I'm impressed with Coach. I had this season pegged as a throwaway because of the injuries and transfers but she's got these girls playing at a high level.
