Interesting. This move by the Big 10 seems to leave the Big East mostly intact, which leads me to believe that we will decline.

I've heard all along that we will only join if the big east is decimated. With only Rutgers, I do not think that hurts the big east...however, if we say "no" again, the opportunity might never happen again.

I would say that the big ten has done their homework, and is presenting a domino effect and that's why ND will need to join. I'm for it, let's change things up a little.

With the exception of Northwestern, every school in the Big 10 is a step below ND academically. I think it will hurt the Academic prowess of ND if we join the Big 10.

Now explain to me why it would "hurt" the academic prowess of ND if we joined the big 10? that makes ZERO sense what so ever. We would still be who we are. If you ask me I think its about time for us to stop being a bunch of pussies and thinking were better than everyone else and join a goddamn conference already. I mean come on. Were in the big east in every sport BUT football? GROW SOME NUTS ND and join for fuck sake. I'm tired of hearing about it...................................sorry, hadta vent. you know me.

But if we joined the big 10 or ANY conference for that matter, it definately would'nt make us any different academically.......Ok I feel better.

um what?

depending on the discipline, there are plenty of big ten schools with higher academic rankings then notre dame.

michigan, ohio state, northwestern are pretty damn good schools over all.

For me it all depends on the details. What will happen with the TV deal? How will the conference be organized? What will our schedule look like and what traditional opponents will we have to give up? I would be interested to know how the Big Ten addresses these issues in their proposal to ND.

the more i look at this, the more it really forces our hand.

hypothetically if we say "no", then who does the big ten court next?

...they are already taking rutgers so if it is another big east school (pitt, syracuse) then we may be f*cked.

Good point. We'd still keep the purdue michigan and michigan state games. We'd obviously keep usc. I wouldn't mind us dropping navy and stanford althogh it would probably never happen

Actually, there aren't. Other than Northwestern, there are no Big 10 schools even close to us academically. this is not to say that there aren't some fine research institutions in the Big 10, but in the classroom they don't compare. Check the US News annual rankings.

That said, I hope we turn them down again.

As long as Navy wants to be on our schedule, they will be. If you don't know why, ask any ND alum. BTW, it's Stanford not Standford.

the fact that you are using the overall US NEWs report of a gauge of academic standing is comical in itself, but ill humor you...

according to the US News:

northwestern: #12
notre dame: #20
michigan: #27
wisconsin: #38
illinois: #39

that looks "close" to me...

as i said, one must look discipline by discipline to see how ND compares to some of these big ten schools. please do so (because you have not) and then report back. thanks.

From an academic standpoint it might actually benefit ND. The research possibilities in engineering and medicine would be endless. Sharing research with other Big Ten schools and vice versa would be a great thing for ND.

As I said earlier, without an incentive I would say it is a no-go. I want to hear the details before passing judgement though. Bringing ND into the conference would give the Big Ten Network a major bargaining chip throughout the country with cable providers. As far as scheduling goes, the Big Ten would no doubt go to divisions. 8 conference games, 4 non conference games. Navy and SC are givens. My guess is they could rotate Stanford and BC. The fourth game could be a MAC school or every now and then a Big time SEC/Big 12/ACC opponent.

The other dynamic is what does the rest of the country do? The SEC and PAC 10 are not going to stand back and watch the Big 10. What does this mean for the Big East, ACC, Big 12?

I know it's Stanford. I accidently hit the d. And I do know why navy is on our schedule

Look, joining or not joining a conference really won't have much of an effect on ND's research either way. Collaboration and resource sharing in academia is not based on conference affiliation, but rather location and common interest. I am currently a grad student at UC Berkeley, and while it is fairly common for people here to collaborate with people at Stanford, it is even more common to collaborate with people at UCSF, which doesn't even have an undergraduate school. We are currently collaborating with people in Boston, and have even talked about collaborating with my the lab where I did my undergrad research at ND. The point is, conferences are athletic organizations and don't really have any bearing on what a school does in terms of research.

Personally I think we should move to the Big10.
We'll have 8 conference games and 4 ooc games. This will allow us to renew rivalries with Ohio St. and Penn St., as well as possible new rivalries against good teams like Wisconsin and Minnesota. We'll keep playing our current rivals like Purdue,Michigan, and Michigan St. And as far as OOC goes, we'd keep USC and probably Navy.

The only thing I'm worried about is media. The only thing I want is to be able to see my IRISH play every weekend. One thing I thought of today, that I havnt heard brought up before, is if this does come to pass how much will we get to see ND on tv? Any possiblity we could maybe strike a deal with PayPerView,or just maybe create our own Irish Network?
I know the Big10 network is a big cashcow, but just worried we wont see many games.

The money isn't much better? 2.444x $9million is not much better? Sorry, but its now or never. The Big10 has its targets and if they all sign up count on 1 more team to get in to make 16.

Its coming, its been coming for quite some time, they know they have ND over a barrel with the recent less than mediocre performances. Get in on the ground floor and move up to the penthouse.

you have to wonder, wouldnt it make sense for nbc/big ten network to make some collaborative deal ?

Apparently that is impossible according to some around here. 4 avenues of viewership? ESPN, ABC, NBC, B10N. It comes with its own money printing press. I am sure that ND would demand to be on national TV weekly on a condition that it signs on the line.
