From seeing this kid in practice, from the videos on UND.com. I believe he is one of the fastest players if not the fastest on the team. Im just curious why they wouldnt give the chance to take the kickoffs. I see huge potential from this kid. I hope weis uses him more this saturday.

there is enough talent at the Return pos. that it is not needed to take you number 2/3 running back and throw him out there. Now if the guys returning started to make mistakes then you could see some kind of change but not right now.

Exactly.

Right now, Munir is the #2 back behind Walker. Unfortunately, our #3 back is also our #1 LB, so until we have a healthy James Aldridge and because we have depth at the WR slot, that is why Grimes and West are returning kicks.

When we have more depth at the RB slot, you just cannot run unnecessary risks like that.

There's a lot more to returning kicks than pure speed. It would be different if the coverage team started out behind you.

Plus West has been enrolled since spring, practicing with the KO return team, Munir will get his shot soon at RB, I can't wait! Looks like Rocket.

Lambert was the fastest player on the team last year, yet I never saw him return any kicks

If Armando Allen or Deonte Thompson come to ND

then you will know the true meaning of speed

I think Grimes and West can hold their own in the speed department.

Yup, we have a bunch of them.

Zibby is plenty fast as well (he was a track star in HS as well as FB)...

We have plenty of speed...but let's not forget vision.

Remember Allen Rossum? Man...that guy had vision!

Agree entirely here. Sometimes speed on kickoffs or in the backfield is a curse, not most of the time, because the player won't wait that split second for blocks to set up and they get caught in a pile-up. Vision is just as important as speed, if not more important. You could have the fastest man on the planet, but if he can't find a hole, what good is he?

After the Rocket, Rossum is my favorite ND player of recent memory. Nothing like a return threat.

He had more than a couple very memorable returns. He was so quick and had such amazing vision. Anytime he touched the ball you knew he had a shot to break out for the big TD.

I did enjoy Rossum. He was a great returner. Isn't he still playing?

Actually, Matt Shelton was, running a 4.29.

ahh yes you're probably right my friend, my point was though that the fastest guy isn't always the best returner. Shelton was an awful returner as I'm sure we all remember, and he was the fastest player on the team last year.

Willingham probably figured what most fans think, stick the fastest guy back there, hence the reason he let Selton return kicks, which turned out to be an awful mistake as we saw how bad a returner Selton was Ty's last year.

Currently I'm fine with the Grimes, and West combo, Grimes is soilid, and I haven't seen enough of West yet to speculate. Weis saw something in TommyZ that the previous coaching staff, and most fans in general didn't see, that he is a helluva punt returner. Weis was smart enough to see the punt returner potential in Tommy Z(even though he is an unconventional returner), therefore I trust his judgement on the return game.
