Great night, Conor IMO silenced all the doubters, basically walked through all of Mendes shots and a lot of the were big right hands, was taken down a few times and survived on his back without taking night ending shots and every time he was on his feet just walked Chad down throwing big shots and kind of surprisingly a lot of kicks. He was not going to be denied. Speaking of not being denied...Robbie Lawler had that and then some. I was impressed by Rory's mental toughness this fight, but he was in there with a real fighter. Mack Brown, Jeremy Stephens...great great card.

I don't think Connor silenced the critics completely. He landed a great left hand, but he better learn some takedown defense quick, because a wrestler who gets more than 2 weeks to train for a fight will ground and pound their way to victory. Mendes just showed how to beat him.

I think this logic is flawed. Chad had 2 weeks to train for Conor, but he was already training as normal. Dude has been wrestling his whole life though, and nobody in the weight class has even close to the wrestling skill. Who will be able to do better?

He is not going to transform into an experienced wrestler. He did not look like he was selling out to stop the takedown and he fought like he had no problem with the match going to the mat. I think he knew that he would be taken down especially when he continuously through kicks. What he did do was avoid devastating ground and pound, and escape when Chad attempted a submission; and then immediately come forward with heavy strikes when on his feet.

He got a 2nd round tko against the number 1 contender and probably the second best wrestler in the division, took his best overhand right more than a few times and didn't take a step backwards. If the goal posts are fixed to the ground, in my mind that is answering the critics. This is not an all talk, WWE entertainer.

May I ask who #1 is? Chad is better wrestler than them all, including Frankie. Most takedowns in division history speaks for itself. 2x All American and 2nd place at the NCAA Tournament.

I initially wrote that he was probably the best wrestler in the division, but didn't want to offend any of Frankie's fans. Chad was certainly the more decorated amateur wrestler, even though he has been throwing hands a lot of late. Frankie hasn't spent the majority of his career at 145, and his wrestling is pretty high level also. I guess I was throwing Frankie a bone, but I would have to say I personally agree with you, Chad probably is the best wrestler.

Agreed. Personally, I think Frankie has a better shot than Chad simply because his cardio is MUCH better, he has the wrestling to keep Conor down, and has a serious chin on him.

It's not a flawed logic at all. Sure guys are staying in shape, but there's a big difference between staying in shape and being in a training camp for a fight. If you don't think that the game plan to get Connor down and keep him down (and don't go for risky submissions) hasn't been shown, well I guess we'll see.

We shall see. I don't think Conor loses at 145. 155 where he has no size advantage could be an issue. I think the grappler to give him problems is Khabib.

One thing we learned about Conor was you can hit him in the head with a baseball bat and he'll keep coming.

Totally agree! I have always thought Frankie poses the most problems. His wrestling is obviously a huge advantage over Conor, but I think he puts his strikes together better than Chad. Clearly doesn't have the one punch power that Chad has, but puts combinations together well, with exceptional footwork and there is simply no quit in him, Conor will have to put him to sleep to not go 25 minutes.

Chad had no pressure on him. He didn't have to go on a global PR tour, he didn't have his training constantly interrupted by media obligations. The table was set for him. He got to go in and fight in a win/win situation. And he still lost. As to the second part of your post...Do you really think Mendes needed to expose that wrestling was not Conor's best suit? I mean everyone knew the way to try to beat him was to try and take him down and hold him down. The point we are making is that the best wrestler in the division couldn't execute the most obvious gameplan which happens to be squarely in his wheelhouse.

I'm not saying you have to like Conor McGregor but "c'mon man", the guy is a heck of a fighter.
