i'm not saying too many things negative about minter till they get some of "their guys" into the mix. However, if I see one more halfback pass go for a TD this year, I'm gonna kick my damn TV in.

I agree with that completely. I didnot kick my tv but I threw an old and heavy ashtray through the screen. Damn that made me mad. luckily it was an older tv and so i am not really upset about losing the tv as much as i am about another option pass for a score.

Not pressuring the QB is the main problem. Too much time for the QB to figure out where to go. That has to stop. Immediately.

Saturday we saw a lot of Lambert, Ferrine, Herring, Brockington, Mitch Thomas and Vernaglia.
Jiggs, I am happy that Weis is playing some of the FR and SO, which we did not see last year. I would like to see more of Prince and Aldridge was impressive in the few plays we saw him.

Perhaps Weis is conceding that this is not going to be the NC year and he needs to start thinking about the future. Juat a thought.

I saw Mo Richardson and Toryan Smith get in there a couple of times.

I would love to see Prince and Aldridge get meaningful carries with the first team. Prince did on Saturday and the crowd was buzzing.

My dad was pretty hyped about both. His one "want" more than anything is the game breaking RB.

The offense is not as good as last year; the defense has shown little or no improvement from last year. The coaching has become too predictable. Should we be successful in getting a strong and talented 2007 recruit class, there should be no excuse for not winning the nat'l. championship in 2008. But, the coaching must be the best also. I think Charlie is a great head coach thus far..but he, too, must insure he has the best coordinators and staff to win it all.

How about for not contending for one? Winning one is never a given...ask Holtz about that in 1993.

Forget about next year, I think Weis is starting to play freshmen so that he can with THIS year. I think we all agree that this team still needs to improve if it's going to win out. Some of the freshmen (e.g., Smith) are just now starting to pick up the system and challenge the upperclassmen.

You are right on. The best man at the best position.

Weis is not benching good starters just so he can get Freshman play time. If they are the best, they will play.

What is scary is how many are starting and getting significant play time. It bodes well for the future, but speaks VOLUMES about the older players.

Give Stanford credit for coming out with a fire in their bellies. ND will get the best shot from every opponent they play. There will hardly be any easy first halves.

The biggest problem with the defense is the linebacker play. First, linebacker play has fallen off since Travis Thomas has been out. There weren't many complaints when he was in because he is fast, he has speed. He was fast enough to pull off blitzes. We are fairly green at the linebacker play. The freshmen linebackers are no where ready to play. They aren't nearly strong enough to play. But they have better speed. On one play Maurice Richardson was just overmuscled and shirted because of lack of strength. And he is one of our strong feshemen.

The Stanford line averaged over 300 pounds and was well seasoned. They took it to us last season. Our defensive line had to wear them down. And we did. I counted seven of our defensive linemen putting a whipping on a good offensive line.

Give Coach Minter time to develop his front seven and you will be quite satisfied. He can't use nearly the schemes in his system because of personnel issues. It takes years of quality recruiting and personnel development to see a consistently elite defense. We are on our ways, gentlemen.

Good post. Reps. Let's get the right seasoned personnel in before jumping to conclusions.

Actually, watching the Front Line push the Stanford line around was really nice to see...that pocket collapsed a LOT. It was a very relaxing game for me. LOL

Right With You...HeavenKnows!

Its all about recruiting the individuals to run Minter's defensive scheme. While I feel very strong/confident about our future offensively with current players and the soon to be commits...I also feel that with the recruits that will be brought in to enhance our defense, we will still be a team to contend with come 2007. With that said...we should forget about next year!

We have freshman that are starting to understand the offensive and defensive, and are ready to play for the Irish...this year! Like someone (LOVEMYIRISH) said...the best man at the best position! Each and every circumstance call for altering the plays and players. All our players have a distinct strong point as well as a weak point. The coaches will and should by now know these strengths and weaknesses and capitalize on them?

Here's to a 11-1 record going into the BCS Bowl...and to an Undefeated season in 2007!

You don't have guns in the house, do you?

And yet he's the quickest DL player off the snap of the ball.
Faster than even Liandri.
That's what we need.

I'm sorry, but I thought Charlie said that Ambrose could play, but because he is impressed with Lambert he decided to continue to rest Ambrose. That doesn't sound like a scrub to me. Herring actually played pretty well. It looks like he is one of the best tacklers on the team. He wrapped up and brought the ballcarrier down. Brockington, hasn't played that bad.

I believe Charlie said all the guys (starters) discussed could play. He gave his recovering starters a week off before the bye to mend completely for the Second Season. And he gave a bunch of the scrubs on defense and offense time to play in a game which wasn't on the line until the 4th Q.

Struck me as sound coaching all around.

That's exactly why it's so important for Notre Dame to have a lead going into halftime. Put the other guy's fire out immediately, or else it's Michigan State (or Michigan... *shudder*) all over again. When the other team believes they still have a chance, that's usually when we're in trouble.

The only thing I hate is how the safeties play down hill 75% of the time. You know you are prone to getting burned deep so just stop it and make sure you have the deep ball covered.

What are you talking about? He's playing Fr and So to fill the HUGE void Ty left us. FROM DAY ONE he started Greenies. We have new recruits, that he wants to have some battle scars to prime up for bigger games. What better way to develop a kid than put him in the prime slot.

As for our title shot - It would have been great, but remember the season isnt over. A good bowl game is EASILY in our grasps.

Anyways, I think as Irish fans, we put the cart waaaay before the horse this year.

After reading all of the posts, I have only one question....

WHERE ARE THOSE BIG, FAST AND TOUGH DT'S????

I know we are recruiting them, but I never hear a lot of positives there, except that we always seem to be in a 1,2 or 3 school race. What needs to be done to lock these players down?

its never 100% one thing or the other. However, there are plenty of teams out there with much better defenses with supposedly less "talent". worst comes to worst I'd just like to see more agression, from scheme to each player himself just being more agressive and less pensive (LB's especially).

Number one issue that continues to manifest itself on the field week after week.

It is what it is and I don't see it changing. They play what they play and live to die with it. Sooner or later, Ndukewe and Zbikowski need to deliver those big ol' hits on receivers down the field. Kind of like the picture of Calvin Johnson at the top of this page.

Haven't seen one of those since.

I think better linebacker play would free up the safeties to play more like safeties.

The defensive recruiting in this class is absolutely paramount for this football program's future.

While you wring your hands over Clausen and Benn and Armando Allen and Ryan Miller, the big fish all reside on the other side of the ball. Wilson, Martin, Barksdale, Blackwell, Donald and Smith are all the most major recruits on the board at this very moment.

In terms of getting back to Minter. I say we give him another year or two, then make judgements. Although it isn't hard to say that he hasn't impressed me much from what I have seen.

Our players are better than the 90th defense in the country (or whatever it is). They just simply are, everyone has to admit that. And then you say, "Well why are they playing like the 90th in the country?"

Surely some of it is the tough opening schedule. But they simply are playing up to their potential in my mind. Which is why I place a decent amount of the blame on Minter.

It is far too important that we get quality people on the d I want good offense but as far as I'm concerned CW will always get that...NC's are won by top flite defense

Top Flight D's? Tell that to USC and Texas...they outscored people.

The only thing I don't understand about Rick Minter is why he doesn't blitz more often. Look at the Michigan game. (I don't really want to either). In the first quarter we were sending eight men at Henne and it resulted in a pick for a touchdown. After that we let him stand in the pocket all day long. I don't getit
