YouTube - Countdown to Kickoff - Day 22

Take what you want from it.

IMO, they look small. It's likely because they aren't wearing pads, but these guys simply do not look that big. All three quarterbacks look like walking sticks. Pretty much the only two whose physique I was impressed with were Jonas Gray's high school buddy Kenny Demens (#25) and defensive back Troy Woolfolk (#29).

From what we can see, it looks like either the offense is unstoppable or the defense is absolutely horrible. And from what I see, there is ridiculous running room and the receivers are open. Every time Denard Robinson breaks into the clear there is literally no one there.

They appear to be fast, but I'm not too impressed. We'll wait and see what they look like in full pads.

They were really freaking small last year too..

I'll be honest... the UM game is a loss imo until our boys go out and win it...

either way, both of our schools need to get a hell of a lot better than we have been recently... with Nebraska coming out of their funk last year the only two teams among the "classic programs" that are missing from the National scene now are us and Michigan... no matter how much you hate on SC, or Bama, or OU, or ND, or Michigan or so on, College Football is better when each are legitimately good.

The good thing is that Dayne will at least have time to throw and we'll probably be able to run the football.

A. We don't know that yet at all. We think our line will be better, but let's be honest...we thought that last year (and they were until the 2nd half of the season, probably starting with the USC game), and while they were better, they were nothing to brag about really.

B. Man, I just looked at some of the USC players in still photos in action from practice yesterday, and those are some big boys. Their linemen are huge, and their skill players are yoked. Those were some athletic looking kids there. Who knows if they're chemically enhanced or whatever, I'm just saying, one day soon we need to get to where they are physically.

With Longo working them out, they already look a LOT better, and Kelly is recruiting bigger athletes, so it looks like we're on our way...

Michigan's defense is as weak as its ever been.

Yeah you could say our defense was bad last year, but does anyone want to switch our D with their D?

Didn't think so.

With out offense weapons, we should not lose this game.

I think our defensive toughness will be the key factor. More mental toughness than physical. From the look into Michigans practice, they ARE fast and we need to be able to stay our position and defend that qb option with our front seven. Our secondary needs to stay at home and force them to run the football with their small line. I think we win with an improved team and homefield advantage but not by a considerable amount. I just see Michigans defense being thinner than ours and not able to stop our WRs.

Absolutely right. Denard Robinson is a blazer and will be our number one priority. If we can stop Robinson and put a clamp on the running game, all we need to do is cover well and we win easily. Michigan's best running back appears to be Fitzgerald Toussaint (which, by the way, has the word "saint" in it and has become a sort of favorite among Michigan fans), so look out for him, as well.

Michigan's defense has far better secondary depth. The difference between our defensive backfield and theirs is that we have a fifth-year senior with three years of major starting experience (Walls), two redshirt juniors (Smith, Gray) with at least a year or two of starting experience, and a redshirt sophomore (Slaughter) in ours while they have a plethora of freshmen, sophomores and redshirt sophomores with little experience.

If our offensive line has improved footwork and quickness off the snap, we will dominate in the running game. We had a mediocre offensive line with players like Sam Young and Paul Duncan last year, and Armando Allen had a career day. Jimmy Clausen had all day to throw. If the offensive line is competent, our offense will roll. The defense is the key. If they cannot stop Michigan, it's a shootout. If they can bend but not break or shut them down entirely, it's an Irish win by a big margin.
