So if ND loses Butch Lewis to USC, they're really screwed.

McCoy looks to be OU or LSU.

I think ND gets Carufel, Lewis and Young.

We really, really, really need a big defensive tackle. One that can come in and contribute early. If we can't get that, we will face the same problems we had this year.

Is Weis or any assistant coaches at the game site recruiting? Is this allowed?

He had better text message his recruits and have them push for McCoy, Lewis, Carufel, etc., since it appears that the other schools are recruiting with their kids.

Check the Practice thread. There were 5 ND assistants including Ianello at the practice today.

The ND kids have been there pitching.

i have a feeling mccoy has an itch to start his frosh year. most frosh want to start asap. he must know our weakness, and i'm sure weis has made it clear he would be starting in sept. i dont see any reason why we couldnt land this big of a recruit. he and lewis would make this class epic regardless of the last commitment outside of these two.

I doubt it.

But I'd bet Weis told him he can play as soon as he's ready and would start if and when he beats out the others.

I don't think Weis sells guarantees. He sells opportunity and demonstrated that on Opening Day '05 with Turkovich, Duncan and other freshman that they play when there ready. And with Schwapp, that freshman can start when they work their way to #1 on the depth chart.

Yeah, it would be a big mistake to ever promise an incoming frosh a starting role. I don't care who they are. Everything has to be earned. Make the opportunity clear, but promise nothing.

In any event, even if not starting, either of the two would probably see significant action. In college and pros, DL is one of the most rotated positions. Those are the guys you want to keep fresh. Our lack of depth there really hurt this year.

It is a horrible sales method and one that intelligent high school players can see right through if you do your homework.

Darius Walker was highly sought after and when coaches would tell him "You're our #1 guy" or "We need help at running back", he would check who else they're recruiting and look at their media guide at the roster. If they were lying, he usually knew it.

I really hope ND gets Sam Young, but the thought of both Lewis and McCoy has pierced my defensively trained brain. I think McCoy is going Sooner, though. Sam Young can assume that RT spot if he comes in and plays the way he's capable of.

I agree on McCoy, but not Lewis. A couple of the Rivals guys have stated that Lewis might not be an ND lock, but it's pretty damn close.

Young going to Penn State is possible, but by no means a lock when he still has visits to take. Everyone continues to speculate ND is the team to beat and has the inside track on Young.

I have no one source...Just from various sites, vibes....The whole "Where there is smoke there is fire" applies here....Apparantly, we 'slow played' Lewis while waiting for McCoy and he was not happy about it, and more sites than not have Young leaning away from ND not towards it....FWIW

Rivals and Scout continue to mention ND as the main competitor.

If you say ND Central, the Tsunami of retorts will follow.

You may be right but don't talk about "locks" unless you have some hard evidence which the rest of us don't have.

If I had a nickel for every post in the last 4 months which talked about so and so "leaning" in this direction or other I would could retire early.

We are all entitled to our OPINION but as far as I can see NOONE knows where Lewis, McCoy, or Young are going. Perhaps even THEY don't know.

And then there were three. (schizen!)

GM = GERALD McCOY, DT, Oklahoma City Southeast OK:
JH = James Hale Sooner scout.com

JH: You were fantastic in this All-American game today. How does it feel to play in this game and play so well?
GM: “It is great to go against the best and still dominate. It gives you a powerful confidence about yourself. It is great to go against the best players in the nation and do well. I had fun, but we didn’t come out on top. I still had fun in my last high school football game.”

JH: You have talked often about how proud you are to be ranked among the best players, and how you were looking forward to testing what you learned from your coaches at Southeast and from Coach Shipp at camp against other great players to see how you match-up.”
GM: “Yeah, it is the greatest feeling to know that you can match-up with these guys. I want to thank God for giving me the ability that he has given me to do what I can do. I couldn’t do anything that I can do without God. Yesterday, I had a real bad groin injury and when I woke up this morning I didn’t feel anything. That is all God’s will to let me do what I have to do.”

JH: You went against some of the best offensive linemen in the country, so give us your impression how it went for you?
GM: “I just played my game and it seems things went pretty well for me. We had certain calls and they let me play my style of play. They gave me the freedom to do that, and I guess all the talents that God gave me and all that I have learned from my coaches worked.”
JH: You came to this game with six schools on you list, but I understand you now have it down to three.
GM: “Yes, my choices are down to LSU, OU and USC.”
JH: Are you still going to take the rest of the month to decide? GM: “Yes sir.” James Hale OU Scout.com

That hurts.

I don't know what kind of "deadlines", if any, ND is giving these guys. I look at the caliber of players still uncommitted and think to myself, can ND get these kind of guys next year?

USC offers 4 and 5 star players, nothing less. Those are impact players that can come in and make an impact fairly quick. Three star guys are going to need developing. Right now, they have two DE that probably won't see the field until 2008 and no defensive tackles.

Losing McCoy hurts momentum, depth and reputation. The second is the most important, third being the least.

You guys are reading way to much into what McCoy said. I think that he is still going to choose between us and OU. If we were out of the running, I believe that the coaching staff would have known before Saturday. With George West having just made his decision to enroll early, it would be in very poor taste for McCoy to dismiss ND immediately after that decision.

Apparently, Demetrius Jones gave an interview this weekend stating McCoy is definitely Irish, Young probably.

I've trolled BGI to see what is going on. Everything conflicts, but what Jones and Aldridge are saying seem to conflict with all the other junk out there.

Well, Aldridge has been the class' recruiting coordinator with Jones seemingly serving as his assistant. They should know.

Here's the scoop:

Jones told BGI's Jason Sapp he doesn't know it for a fact, but he's about as close to fact as you can be that McCoy and Young will be Irish. He, along with Aldridge and some of the others, talked quite a bit with McCoy and Young this week down in San Antonio.

From what the staff has told the verbals and what the verbals have heard from these guys, things look very good.

Webb, Stewart, Wenger and even Carufel were chatting with Young. Jones and Aldridge (and of course West) have talked with McCoy.

SBT reports that the Irish are out of the running for McCoy...ughhhh. Also says they are back to recruiting Kates as a result of this.

Don't get too bent out of shape about any of these reporters. The fact that he tells Lemming and other reporters one thing and players at the game another thing is in keeping with his character. He wants his commitment to be a surprize and I believe he will pick ND.

They're still alive with McCoy and Young. Don't worry about it just yet. We'll know soon enough.

Rivals has USC tied for third on the team recruiting rankings. Poodle appears to be restocking with defense.

The SBT report is probably based on the same interview everybody else is quoting. We'll see. I'm holding out hope.
