Let's not get too optimistic. Here's why.

Central Michigan had almost as many yards as we had on offense versus Purdue, but gave up over 100 yards less to Purdue on defense. They also allowed Purdue only 16 first downs. (We allowed 23.) And the game was on Purdue's home field.

Hey, I want to be as positive as anyone else, so please don't leave the standard response.

I am just making a simple point.

mmmm I dont care, yesterdays win was great. You can throw up all the stats you want but what it comes down to is the team played like a machine and crushed purdue in the 2nd half.

I care

. . . because I don't want the team to think they are great, before they are.

See Michigan game, followed by Michigan State game.

Well, thank God the team has you to keep them in check. Without your thought provoking and insightful posts, the team might have gotten too cocky. Phew! Thank the Lord you were here to keep that from happening. You should be given an honorary monogram.

Heaven forbid college kids should feel good about a victory!

Maybe my problem is I think my team is great no matter what. I always think ND is going to win no matter who they are going to play it can be stanford or USC call me naive but thats the faith i have in my team.

There is a stark contrast in the play of a team waiting to lose and a team expecting to win. The belief that they not only have the ability to win, but that they are going to win is fundamental in the latter. The deflation of emotion, win or loss, has been a self-admitted error on Coach Weis' part and, in my opinion, the team has shown enough spark around which they can rally and continue to improve and win games. Additionally, the lackluster performance in the first half largely skews the stats of a textbook second half. Just some things to consider.

My perspective is that last year watching them play hurt more than having a nail driven into my forehead.

Not so this season. They aren't NC bound but the nail gun has been put away.

I think it's a fair point. I don't see this as a Top25 team because of this win...but I do see improvement and this year that's all I need to see.

Purdue is a good veteran team, and we handed them their ass. Going back to the second half of the MSU game, this offense has looked very good over their last 5-6 quarters. They're starting to get that same swagger that the '05 offense had.

I don't think we'll see the pro set/I form very often anymore. Clausen is clearly more comfortable in 3 WR sets, and Allen excelled in the formation, too.

I really think the team turned the corner this game. Michigan game we were helped out by a lot of turnovers, penalties, and a couple fluky long balls.

Since the 2nd half of the MSU game, this offense has had long sustained drives, and have been in total control. The pass set up the run, and the offense has an identity now.

You have to remember that we put up our arguably our best offensive stats of they year against Purdue last year.

But this offense looked much but than I have seen them look in a long time.

Amen to that! The more amped they get, the more fun they will have. Seeing Blanton run that one back was so friggin awesome! I was going completely nuts for him! I hope we see about 10 or 15 more like it from him over the course of his career. That pick 6 should make him real "chirpy" this next week in practice.

My 'simple point' is this: Using your logic, Stanford is going to crush USC since they smoked Oregon State by 8.

Negative reps on this post. I've been critical on this team, but for the first time in years, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them play....not just because they won, but because I saw emotion. More importantly, for the first time, I think I saw a true connection between Coach Weis and his players.

I don't think anybody came into this season thinking there was a national championship on the horizon for 2008. I think most folks wanted progress. Frankly, I think that's what we're getting.

I'm not sure how many of you were in attendance at yesterdays game, but being an usher I can tell you it had it's moments. It was so loud at times that you couldn't hear yourself think! But there were moments in the second half when we had possession of the ball that you could have almost heard a pin drop. I tell you what, I am really tired of reading these feces laden posts of negativity! Why can't you people enjoy the wins? Why can't you jump on the bandwagon of victory? Why can't you help SHAKE DOWN THE THUNDER?!?! It's all a bunch of BS if you ask me! LET'S WHIP SOME CARDINAL BUTT NEXT WEEK!!!!! PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY!!

Well put yoderdame, it's the world man-negative! It's like some of our fans are looking for our Irish to step on their dicks and actually can't wait so they can talk negative about them. Our Irish control what's ahead of them and I'm with them till the end. We played well Saturday and I couldn't be any happier, but your right everyone wants to be negative. I guess we'll hear some more firing topics again this week since we didn't shut them out and score 80 points. It doesn't matter, I love the Irish and nobody can change that.

No need to jump on ndftbl. He was just making an observation - one that only a cautious and hopeful ND fan would take the time to research. I also looked up "stats" and records and scores of about 50 teams today, something I have never done before. That's because I am a cautiously optimistic diehard ND fan who is tortured by any bad play result since the history of God that ND makes.

That said, it is easy to think teams like Central Tech State or Coastal ROTC teams aren't worth a darn, and therefore disregard their strong effort against a well known school.

Truth is, football "stats" that we read about (yds. rushing, points allowed, etc.) are generally worthless bits of "I told you so" info. When football fans look at history, they ask "Who won it all" They don't ask "Yeah, but who had the best stats?".

The only stats that can matter are the stats that coaches use to prepare the team. For example, after scouting the opponent, the defensive coordinator may learn that on 3rd and long, the opponent has a 90% tendency to run a middle screen. Knowing this stat, the DC can make a better informed decision on which D to call. An offensive coordinator can learn about himself from such stats as well, when he finds out that on 2nd and short, he always calls for the deep pass down the middle. He might learn that the opposing D has a tendency to blitz middle every 5th down. I have known coaches that carry charts around them thoughout the game that display stats on opposing teams' tendencies. If it is 3rd and 3 on the left hashmark, on their side of the field, what do they tend to do? Coach will look at the graph and see that 82% of the time, they run their standard "bunch left, Z hook," with a long snap count..

It has never happened, but an NC champ could theoretically end the season with the worst offensive stats in the country. And that would be because they never took the field, because D caused fumble every other play and scored, or punt return returned every kick for TD. ND had a QB in the late 80s that had great stats, but the team lost often. They played come from behind and had to pass. He completed a lot from 20 to 20 yd lines, but would often overthrow or toss an intercept in crucial situations. Reminds me of Marino. Had the greatest of stats, but was relied on too much and threw it away too often in crucial situations.

Oh well. I knew the Irish were going to win shortly after the game started. I watch the game holistically and knew they were operating on all positive cylinders. On the gameday thread, I said early that I was sensing a W. They came to play. They looked unbeatable by the end of the first quarter. I typed in something like "I am sensing a win here." I meant it. I knew what I was talking about.

I also noticed the crowd noise. Holy Mach 2 Batman.

i dont have an issue with this post at all. i think ndftbl shows his passion for the team in this post. the fact he would go and research stats proves he has tremendous interest.

i also can understand his points. and it is a nice counter balance to all of the positivity we are all exuding right now.

realistically the team didnt play lights out defensively and continues to show some issues with a quick hit short passing game.

but we won and WE SHOWED HEART!!!!! which is the most important thing in my book at this point!!!!

please dont knock him down because he brought up another way of looking at it. he even said he was just making a simple point, i really dont think he was angry after the loss, i am sure he was jumping for joy like the rest of us who enjoy this game and this team so very much.

I never in my wildest dream would have called for Holtz. But back to the point of a previous post... I can still cheer for the team on Saturday, digest the W or L on Sunday and then from Monday to Friday criticize or praise the boys, in a calm adult discussion forum, without having to worry about being pelted with tomatoes.
I will defend anyones right to post here, about whatever topic they so choose, but be ready to defend yourself.

I tell you what, watch Jimmy going down the field to celebrate after the 4th down TD to Grimes. That confidence/cockiness seems to mesh well with his personality, and I think it's a good match for this team. I like to see that side of him, the roll up in the Hummer and promise the world attitude that lurks within him. There will continue to be times it blows up in his face, but I think the risk is worth the reward.

He is now 'Jimmy Be Good.' I have decreed that all must now call him 'Jimmy Be Good' or JBG. But who is his Robert Downey Jr.? Evan? Dayne? Nate?
