I've always been a sucker for good old fashioned pregame and halftime speeches! Can you see Kelly giving one of those great ones? Holtz and Rockne were the men that practically invented the idea! or maybe just had some of the best! I found this random one and I'd love to see more if ya have any hidden in your cabinet...

That speech was great. I'm also a sucker for great locker room speeches and it's been one of my favorite parts of coaching. I really get into it. I'm not the HC of my team but over the last three years I've assumed the role of pregame and half time "speaker" for the coaching staff.

I don't have a video but I'll share my favorite speech since I've been coaching...My high school has one of the longest and most heated rivalries in the country. We've played every year since 1894 and up until three years ago the series was tied. It's one of those classic "throw out the records" when we play each other and our rivals are a blue-collar, smash mouth city, as are we.

So, pre-game, I start off by talking about this being a heavyweight fight. I compare it to Ali-Frazier. I asked the team for a show of hands. Who wants to be Frazier today? No hands go up. Who wants to be Ali? All hands go up. Wrong answer I tell them. When that bell rang, Joe Frazier came out swinging. He didn't give a ****. He wanted to take the fight out of Ali and end it immediately. That's the attitude we need to have today, I tell them.

Now, most of you are probably thinking to yourself, "But, coach, Ali won two of the three fights against Frazier. Why would we want to be Frazier?". It's very simple, gentlemen. That team hootin' and hollerin' in the other locker room (we can hear them) is not the greatest of all-time. They're not even close to Muhammed Ali. But, I'll tell you what. They talk like Ali. Let's see how much they're talking when we come out like Frazier and punch them in the mouth.

To make a long story short...we punched them in the mouth but fumbled three times inside the 10 yard line and went into halftime down 10 points (16-6). The halftime speech is actually my favorite but it was deeply personal and one of those "you had to be there" moments. We ended up erasing a 10 point deficit with 4 minutes to play and won the game.

That would be great if he wasn't reading the speech off a piece of paper.
People give Obama crap for reading off a teleprompter, even though his words affect the entire world...
This guy could speak from the heart, especially when he has a catch phrase locked and loaded.

""Rock," he said - "sometime, when the team is up against it" (Rockne looks down at script) "and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got" (Coach checks one more time to make sure he had it right) "and win just one for the Gipper..."

I'm confused, didn't you give the guy crap for reading off something and then give Obama an out because "his words affect the entire world?" A powerful speech is a powerful speech, but it definetly is more effective not reading from something.

I'm confused.

Don't you understand the difference between the leader of the free world and a high school football coach?

One guy's words are dissected for meaning by people who have nuclear weapons, the other is trying to win state.

I just thought we were talking about motivational speeches here (you know, from the initial post). When you're trying to motivate me and you're reading it, it's not as effective. Now since you went off the grid and are talking serious speeches, yes I understand the necessity for accuracy in the speech, hence the teleprompter. The fan boy routine isn't flattering by the way.

You mean like PS3 or XBOX? Or Marvel vs DC?

I think you need to adjust your understanding of the phrase 'fanboy' and 'off the grid.'

I think the coach I was referring to was a schlump because he read his locker room speech off of a piece of paper. Many people think Obama is a schlump because he reads off of a teleprompter.

I saw it as an interesting thought. You called me a fanboy.

One of us doesn't understand turns of thought.

Further... This is the speech that originated this thread. (You know, the initial post.) Unfortunately, the OP didn't embed it.

(By the way, punctuation is always kept inside parentheses and quotations.)

I explained my point, but you insist on attacking me for some reason and not the discussion. Fan boy typically is understood as enthusiastic devotee and off the grid means not connected to the main point. Both seem fitting. Anyway, have a good day.

That would be great if he wasn't reading the speech off a piece of paper.

That coach briefly gazed at his Bullet Points 6 times in the first 34 seconds at the 13, 18, 21, 23, 26, and 34 second marks of that speech. After each pause, he came back to eye contact with his audience.

After the 34 second mark, he did not look again at this notes, not text. His voice rose, his pace quickened to a fever pitch.

The motivating factor in that speech is actually the team chanting back in unison on cue, "I AM THE CHAMPION".

It's an ancient technique used by motivtional speakers throughout history. Hitler used it in the 30's with great effect with the masses to bend the will of a country and he didn't use a teleprompter.

People give Obama crap for reading off a teleprompter, even though his words affect the entire world. ...

It was a shame somebody didn't run a blue line through his red line speech. His ambivalence resonated around the world.

Back to football.

Great delivery coach!

Point of order here. I think the punctuation goes on the inside of parentheses if it is a standalone sentence. But you can have a parenthetical phrase within another sentence and that should not have punctuation within. For example: "To the extent I know anything (and I don't say I do), I know that the Brady Hoke has an IQ of a grapefruit." In the above example, Domer's punctuation seems okay to me. I agree with you re quotation marks.

Okay, carry on.

I'm a huge boxing fan and his speech always stuck with me, i don't think it would necessarily work for a football speech but it seemed right to embed it in this thread

Rocky Balboa's inspirational speech to his son. - YouTube
I saw this and had to share... try it... and then do the thing our minds make us do... Beautiful!!
1.)Stop video at 1:26
2.)Open up youtube in another tab
3.) Search Time by Hans Zimmer and play and then do it again and play at 2:06
4.)Start both the video and song at the same time

Screwed that all up trying to quote something else... ha! But this was a Quote from rikkitikki08

This is one of the best I have heard. It's Irvin at halftime of UM FSU game a while back.
