Texas Tech chose to "not retain" Cooks. Didn't realize Cooks was let go.

They parted ways when Orlando took the TT job... then Orlando leaves a couple of weeks later for SC. Duke's Derek Jones got the DC job and he's handling the backend so he didn't need Cooks either. Worked out for the good guys in '20.

This is the best we got from the Caleb Kelly thread. It all goes back to some random 247 poster. From there, it took on a life of it's own.

Per a poster on 247 and it makes sense if you think about it

ND took the lead and there is no denying that. Cooks went in on his inhome visit and basically had questions about BVG and Cooks started bad mouthing him and ND. Hence why OU took the lead back, I am sure are staff has addressed it and I am not sure if we can take over this recruitment in the next 24 hours but that's what happened. People said ND bad mouthed OU and OU basically shot back with Jerry Cooks. So F Cooks at least have some respect for ND(if he actually did this) IMO it's 55/45 in favor of OU

If I recall correctly, he aggressively neg recruited against us in the Caleb Kelly recruitment.

Yes... which is part of his job in that case. Do you think ND folks weren't showing him ROI spreedsheets on an ND degree vs a "low level, regional" OU degree. "Do you wanna work on Wall St. or the Clean St Car Wash in OKC?

Anyone know what was actually said in this case?

That's not negative recruiting. That's honesty. No italics.

I thought it was way more than the Caleb Kelly recruitment

Main one that I remembered was Caleb Kelly. I think the other times it was brought up as if it was a fact that Cooks does nothing but bash ND. I think it all goes back to that one post in Caleb's thread. Things become fact if you repeat them frequently enough.

I haven't seen specific quotes but enough mentions of it from various mods and sites to feel confident it was happening.

No thank you, to having Cooks back.

Perhaps a long game of revenge from BK/ND? lol

I'm surprised he can't find a full time assistant coaching gig.

That's got Netflix special written all over it.

I would assume it's CB coach/defensive staff insurance in case Mickens leaves after one year and/or Lea decides to as well. Have some guys on staff that worked well for him in the past.

The lesson here is don't coach DBs in the Big 12. Your career will go to die.

Cooks is 45 years old and played a few years in the NFL. Maybe I'm missing some buried bones here, but I'm genuinely shocked he's taking a behind the scenes gig anywhere.

He was making $500K last year and is coming off of working for five Power Five schools. This is an alpha, ego driven business he's in. Don't tell me his pride isn't stinging.

He's overqualified to be doing this. Maybe it was just timing and nothing is opened up right now, but he should be coaching DBs with his resume and acumen.

I could be off but this has all the signs of being very similar to Quinn (he was coming off a HC gig). Take an analyst role and when a position opens up it's yours.

I think he just got pinched late in musical chairs with the TTech Orlando/Jones debacle and the jobs he can get right now aren't worth the one year risk/headache. That's why a lot of guys take these $40k analyst jobs for a year at top tier programs. Wait till next year when the carousel starts spinning. They can afford it.

basically what Bama has been doing for last 5-7 years. Then every year when a position coach leaves the analyst steps up and takes his role

AND this is the new normal thanks to St. Saban of Tuscaloosa. No shame in this game.

He's from the Dallas area, and recruited it previously while at ND and OU. Lots of HS talent in these parts.

I'm going to guess that the "ND Bashing" rumors were bullsh!t at least as far as anything egregious beyond simply recruiting. And I'm going to guess that Coach Kelly knows this perfectly well. And then I'm going to guess that this appointment is Coach being, as usual, a good and loyal guy, and doing an old colleague a favor until he gets his feet back under him.

... but soapbox speculation makes more news always.

Quinn probably got some kind of buyout from UB, right?

I would have to assume Cooks can get something come Dec/Jan/Feb when the carousel starts up again.

It's the name of the game, for sure, but I'm just surprised he's ended up back here as an analyst. Not what I would have expected. Job careers are tricky I guess, especially in football coaching.
