JC doesn't have a JaMarcus Russel arm, but neither does Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning for that matter. I'll take it.

JC's accuracy is better than anyone in the country. He can make every throw.

A perfect example is...if you look at some QB's tape, they complete plenty of passes across the middle. But a lot of the time, the receiver has to adjust to the ball. JC is amazing at getting the ball, on a line, to the receiver where it is easily catchable and he is still in perfect stride. That is what he possesses.

The guy is an incredible talent. You don't play QB for 3 years in HS, and have a HS completion % of ~70%, with a 7-1 TD/INT ratio... in California, without being great. His arm strength is fine.

If we can protect him, he will deliver...given enough time to absorb the offense and the speed of the college game, where everyone on defense was good/great in h.s.

I haven't jumped on the Jimmy Clausen bandwagon by any means, I have a TON of questions about this guy...His age, his compition, his attitude...etc etc etc....

But even if he had a "weak" arm...Danny Wureafull (sp?) had a weak arm...guy couldn't throw a 10 yard out in the NFL because he had to loft it....

A "weak" arm in college really doesn't matter much

The problem with the way most people measure arm strength is whether or not a kid can throw it downfield 60-70 yards; ala Russell at LSU. To me this is not a good measure. How many times does a team go downfield like this. Plus with the athleticism in the defensive secondary today, these passes are rarely completed.

To me the way to measure QB arm strength is on the 12-15 yard outs. Can a QB stand in the pocket and deliver that pass on a line with good timing between him and his receiver. The greats can deliver this pass. I don't know a lot about JC, but if you see him on tape accurately delivering the 10-15 yard out he has all the arm strength he needs to be effective in college and the pros.

Its a fair argument, Ken Dorsey looked like a Great QB in college.....horrible once he didn't have all that talent around him...

See Troy Smith this past year....its easy to look good when you have open recievers, a great running game, and a line that gives you an hour to throw...

But once the players weren't wide open and he didn't have an hour to throw...what happend...6 yards?

We all know what kind of a rocket arm, Joe Montana had too. The way he could air out 70yd bombs was amazing.

To be honest, many scouts have said the same thing... I guess we will see if it's true, or if it's because he was chucking it too much as Weis stated in his presser.

that's actually kind of funny. the reason he switched from linebacker to quarterback in the first place was because a coach saw him at one of his older brothers games messing around on the sidelines throwing 60 yard bombs.

his are looked pretty strong on the first throw he threw in the army game. He zipped it in there. As farr as being as good as everyone thinks.I think this kid has a ton of pressure on him and no matter how good he turns out to be some people are going to say he's a bust.

He'll be fine. The videos I've seen show a better arm than most college QBs. The only thing that bothers me is the pressure/hype factor.

Just from watching the few passes they threw at the AA Game, I thought his arm looked stronger than everyone but Ryan Mallett's.

Exactly, Montana could place the ball exactly where he wanted to on his way to winning three super bowls at the NFL level. If Jimmy can put the ball where it needs to be then it won't be necessary to throw the bombs. We'll just move the ball down the field methodically and efficiently which is far better than trying for the big 70 yard play every series. Give our defense a rest and lessen the risk of turning the ball over. Big arms are overrated; yea it may impress the chicks but it didn't work too well for grossman, manning on the other hand seemed to fair pretty well with those 8-15 yard passes.

yeah.... jamarcus russel's ability to throw 50 yards from his butt will really help him in the NFL since..... well... since QB's throw while sitting down so often.

Give me accuracy over arm strength anyday. How many go routes are called per game compared to intermediate routes?

A lot of this speculation over his arm strength may be simply the result of his arm being overworked through the season and fatigued. As CW pointed out in his last presser, not only were Clausen's practices in H.S. devoted almost entirely to passes, but he also played QB on their scout team on top of that. That will wear down an arm over a season and you'll lose some zip off your passes. Consequently, CW has ordered Clausen to not throw a single ball until at least the end of February so his arm can rest.

Respond with; many people questioned:
-Emmitt Smith's speed
-Mike Bossy's skating
-Steve Largent's speed
-Jack Nicklaus' girth
-Wayne Gretzky's size
-etc

Clausen has an great arm and it's more accurate than most at any level does he have an insane arm like Russell's or fellow incoming freshman Mallett, no but that doesn't mean much.

There are plenty of QB's that have great arms but aren't that good because they don't have other pieces to make them good.

Not coming from a ND perspective as in not being a homer or biased by anymeans but if somebody doesn't think Clausen is extremely good then they have no clue. If they think his arm is weak or evem just above average to just good then they have no clue. It's that simple that don't recognize talent, really, really good talent and/or they are just biased against ND and will say that because they don't want him to be as good as advertised or that they won't admit it themselves that they are being biased and can't and don't want to see through that.

I wonder if he'll say the same thing two years from now?

I dunno... two years in, people weren't saying very nice things about Ron Powlus either.

Don't get ahead of yourselfs, peepz... Jimmy might not even be the starter in '07. And if one of the sophomores wins the job and keeps winning games, we might not even see Clausen start a game until 2010... his senior year.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but there's way too much hype around this kid. If he manages to live up to it, I'll eat my hat.

Did you know Jimmy Clausen is the solution to global warming? He's just that cool.
