Jashaad Gaines of Las Vegas, Nev., High School grew up a big fan of the Maize and Blue. It was his childhood dream to one day don the Winged Helmet and run out of the tunnel at Michigan Stadium. However, the Wolverines, at first, didn't return the love, and Gaines moved on and committed to Notre Dame. Michigan is now recognizing the three-star talent - will he return to his first love?

Like the cheerleader who spurns the benchwarmer with the hope of dating the team captain, Michigan winked and played nice with Jashaad Gaines while they pursued higher rated prospects. However, Gaines is no benchwarmer, and like the jilted suitor who desires revenge, in September he committed to one of Michigan's most bitter rivals - Notre Dame. His sister, Tulyah, plays basketball for the Irish.

Now the tables have turned and Michigan is doing the chasing. The Wolverines have recently stepped up their recruiting of the 6-foot-0, 205-pound Gaines since themselves being rejected by Taylor Mays and Antwine Perez, who chose USC, and Myron Rolle, who decided on Florida State. "Coach (Ron) English was out here on Friday and is trying to get me to come for a visit," Gaines told GoBlueWolverine.com. "He said he is going to offer me, but I think it's too late."

When talking with Gaines, it is apparent that the slow-playing that Michigan did with Gaines has been disappointing. "I would have committed to them on the spot had they offered earlier," he said. "My mom wants me to visit. I have to think about it."

The Wildcats are 10-1 on the season, having dropped their first game to Pine View, Utah by a score of 34-28. Pine View is quarterbacked by one-time Michigan target James Lark, who committed to BYU. Las Vegas bounced by the following week by handing powerhouse Bishop Gorman their only loss of the season in a come-from-behind 34-19 win. The Wildcat defense held Gaels star running back, and fellow Michigan recruiting target, DeMarco Murray to just 29-yards rushing.

Las Vegas plays Silverado in the semi-finals of the regional playoffs. They defeated Coronado on Friday 15-7.

Michigan went after the hottest girls in school and got shot down.

Personally, if I were Gaines I'd tell them to go screw themselves.

I'd feel a LOT better if he said "IT IS TOO LATE", instead of "I think...."

Sounds like scUM stole Ty-ger's book on recruiting.....

POUND SAND!!!

I thought I was the only person in the world to use this phrase. A "G" rated way to tell someone to f*%k off. I started using it the year I gave up swearing for Lent.

Pound sand ranks right up there with "My heart pumps p*ss for...."

I used Urban Meyer most recently.

To Michigan, no. But Gaines found a way.

Their class isn't exactly taking shape. They've been turned down by some marquee players.

Bert Reynold (Bandit) did it to Jackie Gleason (the Sheriff) in one of the Smokey and the Bandit movies. When the Sheriff stopped him for speeding after an interstate chase, Reynolds leaned out the driver's window of his car and said politely to the infuriated Sheriff,

"Sheriff, are you familiar with the expression, F. O. ?"

Irish Commit Pondering Michigan Visit
Josh Helmholdt

After getting to a point where he felt his recruiting process was finished, Las Vegas, Nev., safety Jashaad Gaines now has another decision to make. The three-star prospect made a commitment to Notre Dame after taking an official visit there in September. Now a new team, his dream school growing up, has entered the picture and would like him to take an official visit.

The 6-0, 202-pound Gaines said he had sent tape and emails to Michigan at the beginning of the summer, but had not heard much from the Wolverines until recently when defensive backs coach Ron English stopped by the school.

"He said there was a little mix up," said Gaines regarding the early stages of the recruiting process. "I'm not exactly sure whether they offered or not. They told me they want me to take a visit up there when the season is over. I'm not really sure whether I am going to go down there or not, but I'm still looking at them and always have been looking at them."

Ever since the fifth grade, Gaines said he followed Michigan and was a fan of the Wolverines. That aspect has him pondering a decision whether or not to take that official visit, and he says he has not come to a conclusion yet.

"I'm right in the middle, I am stuck right now," Gaines commented. "There is my dream school on one hand and then a really good school on the other hand, so I'm stuck in the middle right now.

"I remember watching [Michigan] and they always seem to be in the top 15, always. All the time I was growing up, I always liked their team. I just always liked the way they play."

Although he is deciding whether or not to take that official visit, Gaines is still a Notre Dame pledge. He says that pledge is still intact.

"I think it is rock solid, but if I did change my mind about Michigan, I guess that would happen," he added. "Right now I think it is rock solid."

According to Gaines, Michigan would like for him to take an official visit after his season is over with, likely during the weekend of Dec. 3. Gaines' team still could have a ways to go in their playoffs. They are in the regional championship this weekend and have compiled an 11-1 record. He reports over 30 tackles and two interceptions playing the strong safety position.

The coaches told him there was a mix up?

No, Jashaad. What happened was that English and scUM offered Taylor Mays and Myron Rolle and got shot down hard. Now they're scrambling to fill a class with three star products because the four and fives have passed them over.

Pretty obvious what's going on here.

I like Gaines but we've some great DB's so if we lose him the impact will not be so hard. Like Queens, I hope the decision is a quick one.

A mix up in the recruiting? They just forgot to send him the letter? BS. Jashaad, you'd be playing for a bunch of second class LIARS.

scUM didn't want him, ND did.

ND didn't get passed over by anyone, so they certainly didn't settle for Gaines. They hand picked him.

Kinda funny isn't it don? That's what separates us from scUM. They have to resort to crap like this and we are in the position to say "Hey, you wanna go, then go...we'll have your position filled regardless".

God, it's good to be IRISH!!!!

I can't believe he fell for the "mix up" bit. Obviously, he was not first on their list and after they got shot down by the major prospects they came crawling to him begging for mercy. That is so despicable. We've got safety prospects already, so if he decides to leave he needs to do it quickly. That way we can sign another player.

Everyone that took advantage of TW getting fired last year is scrambling to catch up.

Weis and Co. are starting on JUNIOR recruiting already. This class is about over with.

He said it: Everyone got the jump on him while he was with the Pats prepping for the Super Bowl.

Not this year!! To steal Reuland from SC....Prince from Iowa....WE'RE BACK, BABY!!

You know, there's another way to look at this. If Gaines is dumb enough to fall for this shit maybe he shouldn't be at ND after all.

True, but I'm not for losing any of these 19 to anyone, ESPECIALLY Michigan.

I still hate them more than SC.

But yeah, if he changes up, let him go. Brown and Gordon are still here, and it will free up room for someone that might get left out.

But Gaines has too much to lose by backing out of ND.

I'm not really worried about it.

Could Irish Lose Gaines?
Steve Hare

Back in September, Jashaad Gaines, a 6-foot, 202-pound safety from Las Vegas, Nev., pledged his verbal commitment to Notre Dame. But, Michigan, his childhood favorite, has entered the recruiting race and rumors have been making the rounds indicating that Gaines might take a visit to Ann Arbor.

"I've been interested in Michigan since I was 10-years old," Gaines said. "I guess you could say that they lost out because Notre Dame did a good job recruiting me."

Gaines discussed that rumor last night with Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis and defensive line coach Jappy Oliver.

"I just talked to them tonight," Gaines said. "They were just asking me if what they heard was true about me going down there. I said that I didn't say I was going there."

Before publicly declaring his intentions, Gaines wants to speak with Michigan's secondary coach, Ron English.

"I want to talk to coach English before I say anything to a reporter," he said.

Does anyone other than me think Gaines is "talking out of both sides of his mouth"? If I were to bet now I think he is going to Michigan. I also think he has looked at the DB recruits at ND and feels he can do better at Mich. If that is the case Weis ought to put a deadline on this guy. We can use the Scholie!

Expect more of this to come.

Notre Dame's staff is so far ahead of the game that they're ready to start on juniors. Other staffs are going to start raiding the cupboard and try to steal guys.

I would continue going after players who have verballed elsewhere for this very reason.

This is why Florida State is so successful down the stretch with recruiting. Nothing is final until the LOI is signed.
