Considering the lack of depth and the recruits we lost out on, I think our D line did pretty good the past 4 years. Seemed like Jappy did the most with the least talent.
HUH? Dude. Our defensive line hasnt been relevant for over 10 years.
minus abamiri, i would have to agree for the most part.
..... If Mendoza is not fired, I will have no choice but to go take a poop on Coach Weis' lawn.
wow. there are some incredibly stupid posts on this thread
some comments:
1) Jappy Oliver was going to be fired all along. The reason he was fired now and not later with Latina (who will be fired) is because we only have one DL recruit this year and he is already enrolled at ND. Latina will be fired eventually - though we might have to wait until after national signing day.
2) His recruiting (and CW's) on the D Line had been abysmal thus far. Perhaps if we had landed Trattou and Oliver it would be a different story - but we didn't and he needed to go (and should have been fired with Minter).
3) The D-Line play has been shitty for a long time. Minus some individual efforts in recent years by Tuck, Abiamiri, Landri and Laws, the D Line has been pretty bad.
4) While both the offensive line and defensive line are currently shitty - as least the offensive line has the infusion of talent to begin to see improvement and eventually become great again. The D Line will probably not get any better for awhile. No depth whatsoever.

i also want to add that i think Brown/Tenuta did a pretty good job considering the lack of talent they have on the D-Line. That unit should be greatly improved next year.
I will do it for you if you send me $100. Should save you some money since you won't have to buy a plane ticket.
I was hoping for and expecting this change.
What are your thoughts about Chris Zorich for DL coach?
Easy there pal. Why you gotta throw stones around like that like you're some bigshit that knows everything? Here's what you wrote just one game ago:
Now one game later, after they had their best game of the year (albeit against a shitty team) you say they won't get any better for awhile? Huh? Who sounds stupid now?
We all say things here and make predictions that are wrong, but you need to check yourself when you call people stupid...
No offense mooney, but speaking of incredibly stupid:
1) The position coaches do not recruit their own players. The assistants are assigned a GEOGRAPHIC AREA to recruit in. Maybe Oliver has had input into who they go after, but he is NOT responsible for recruiting all of the defensive linemen.
2) See above.
3) I agree
4) See above.
I was surprised to see Oliver let go before Mendoza and/or Latina, but I decided to check into their recruiting history.
Jappy Oliver recruited the following players that ended up signing with the Irish:
2009 - None so far
2008 - Ethan Johnson
2007 - None
2006 - Jashaad Gaines
Latina recruited the following players that ended up signing with the Irish:
2009 - EJ Banks, Carlo Calabrese, Zach Martin, Nyshier Oliver, Theo Riddick, Tyler Stockton
2008 - Lane Cleland, Mike Golic, David Pozluzny, Hafis Williams
2007 - Steve Paskorz, Mike Ragone
2006 - Zach Frazier, Darrin Walls, Dan Wenger, Sam Young
There may be contributing factors to this that I'm missing, but it seems like Latina is a far better recruiter than Oliver. Maybe that's why Oliver was let go and Latina wasn't.
one of the factors here is the fact that each coach is a assigned a certain region of the country to recruit. Latina recruits the east coast, while oliver's region is mostly the pacific northwest. This is not to say that each coach doesnt help recruit players from his own position, but latina is bound to get more players since more of N.D.'s targets come from his region.
His name was Jappy! JAPPY! That's just unamerican!
