Considering the lack of depth and the recruits we lost out on, I think our D line did pretty good the past 4 years. Seemed like Jappy did the most with the least talent.

Wasn't really expecting this one I have to say that. If they fire Jappy and keep Latina the administration at ND needs to lay down the crack pipe and get their heads out of their asses.

I'm surprised that he is the first one...

That's a shocker. I agree completely, Irishwino...I think he did a lot with a little.

Pleeeeeeeeease get rid of Latina. Lord I wish Charlie did this a month ago so we could have gotten Orgeron before Kiffin did. Talk about an old school, smash mouth coach who can out-recruit anyone...

best of luck to ya, jappy.

If Latina is kept aboard, I will hardly want to watch next year.

Might have something to do with only 1 DL recruit currently on board.

As long as Stockton agree's to come regardless of Jappy, then now was an ok time.

With 3 OLine recruits signed up. Maybe they wait till after NSD to axe Latina?

yup, if they would have let Latina or Mendoza go, our fans would be screaming for joy for the most part. More Mendoza IMHO, because losing 3 games in the 4th quarter is inexcusable, and very often it started looking like the team just didnt have the fight in the end.

Latina was a proven OL coach before coming to Weis' system, and maybe that has something to do with it. Hopefully more changes are to come.

minus abamiri, i would have to agree for the most part.

Justin Tuck was a beast for us and is a Pro-Bowler/budding superstar for the NYG. 2 sacks in the first half of the SB last year, and at ND he broke the single-season sack record w/ 13.5 sacks. And Trevor Laws last year was simply a man amongst boys.

But I agree with you both in that our LINE hasn't been relevant for years. Yes, we've had some studs, but not a great line. the firing is a shocker, but if you look at it more closely it really shouldn't be. I'm not shedding a tear personally.

It's more shocking in that we all thought it would be Latina. But I'm starting to agree with you more IrishAddiction, we should be looking at Mendoza as well...

wow. there are some incredibly stupid posts on this thread

some comments:

1) Jappy Oliver was going to be fired all along. The reason he was fired now and not later with Latina (who will be fired) is because we only have one DL recruit this year and he is already enrolled at ND. Latina will be fired eventually - though we might have to wait until after national signing day.

2) His recruiting (and CW's) on the D Line had been abysmal thus far. Perhaps if we had landed Trattou and Oliver it would be a different story - but we didn't and he needed to go (and should have been fired with Minter).

3) The D-Line play has been shitty for a long time. Minus some individual efforts in recent years by Tuck, Abiamiri, Landri and Laws, the D Line has been pretty bad.

4) While both the offensive line and defensive line are currently shitty - as least the offensive line has the infusion of talent to begin to see improvement and eventually become great again. The D Line will probably not get any better for awhile. No depth whatsoever.

I have been yelling for Mendoza to be gone for quite some time now. If Latina stays, I can tolerate it. I won't be happy, but I will live with it. If Mendoza is not fired, I will have no choice but to go take a poop on Coach Weis' lawn.

No offense mooney, but speaking of incredibly stupid:

1) The position coaches do not recruit their own players. The assistants are assigned a GEOGRAPHIC AREA to recruit in. Maybe Oliver has had input into who they go after, but he is NOT responsible for recruiting all of the defensive linemen.

2) See above.

3) I agree

4) See above.

Easy there pal. Why you gotta throw stones around like that like you're some bigshit that knows everything? Here's what you wrote just one game ago:

i also want to add that i think Brown/Tenuta did a pretty good job considering the lack of talent they have on the D-Line. That unit should be greatly improved next year.

Now one game later, after they had their best game of the year (albeit against a shitty team) you say they won't get any better for awhile? Huh? Who sounds stupid now?

We all say things here and make predictions that are wrong, but you need to check yourself when you call people stupid...

I will do it for you if you send me $100. Should save you some money since you won't have to buy a plane ticket.

Actually, it might be more effective if there was more of us. I think we could really make a difference. **tear** Plus, I wouldn't mind the flight because air travel always makes me have to poop for some reason. Must be the continuous cocktails and Jody Maroni sausages at the airport before I leave.

I was hoping for and expecting this change.

What are your thoughts about Chris Zorich for DL coach?

What a great name from the past!! Zorich never lacked for the fire in the belly. Don't know if it translates into coaching ability but the guy could certainly play.

Didn't realize he already works in the athletic department - a coaching position might be a better paying job than working with student welfare and development.

They (the defense) will be greatly improved next year b/c of the return of Darrin Walls and better, faster linebackers getting more PT. The D Line doesn't have the bodies yet to make significant improvements to the level that we would consider to be good. The emergence of Ethan Johnson at the end of the year may be enough to make the D Line better next year, but they will still be a weak point on the team and will enable good rushing teams to run all over us

Of course they get assigned to a geographic area. That is for the majority of contact and exchanging of information between the football program and recruit. But if you honestly think the position coach of the position that the recruit is going to be playing is not a huge factor in the recruit's decision than you are missing a few basics on recruiting. Oliver has not been able to get elite D lineman come to play on his D Line and that is a fact.

I was surprised to see Oliver let go before Mendoza and/or Latina, but I decided to check into their recruiting history.

Jappy Oliver recruited the following players that ended up signing with the Irish:

2009 - None so far
2008 - Ethan Johnson
2007 - None
2006 - Jashaad Gaines

Latina recruited the following players that ended up signing with the Irish:

2009 - EJ Banks, Carlo Calabrese, Zach Martin, Nyshier Oliver, Theo Riddick, Tyler Stockton
2008 - Lane Cleland, Mike Golic, David Pozluzny, Hafis Williams
2007 - Steve Paskorz, Mike Ragone
2006 - Zach Frazier, Darrin Walls, Dan Wenger, Sam Young

There may be contributing factors to this that I'm missing, but it seems like Latina is a far better recruiter than Oliver. Maybe that's why Oliver was let go and Latina wasn't.

one of the factors here is the fact that each coach is a assigned a certain region of the country to recruit. Latina recruits the east coast, while oliver's region is mostly the pacific northwest. This is not to say that each coach doesnt help recruit players from his own position, but latina is bound to get more players since more of N.D.'s targets come from his region.
