I heard he is taking a year off to see if the Notre Dame job comes open LOL!
Actually, you're not as far off as you think.
I have a friend who knows a ton of high school coaches in SoCal, and Chip Kelly from Oregon is heavily recruiting one of his friend's QB's. The word is that Jon Gruden wants to get back to coaching, but college coaching, not pro. Yes, this flies in the face of everything he's said in the past, but that was before he got fired and before he found out that his players totally turned on him. The coaches say that Gruden is tired of spoiled undisciplined NFL players, and wants to return to the college game.
I have no proof of this, but I do know this: Jon Gruden really wanted to learn the spread offense), and so he studied film and talked to people and he thought that Chip Kelly ran it the best. So, as the media reported, he went to Oregon to talk to Chip Kelly, where Kelly offered him the O-coordinator job (Gruden declined). What the media didn't report was that he was there for 2 straight weeks, really getting to know the spread in and out.
Some are reporting that he did it to use possibly in the NFL, but really, who runs the spread in the NFL? The QB's will get killed by those 300 pound linemen and 275 linebackers on roids. If anyone was going to use it, wouldn't someone already have done it with Vince Young or Mike Vick? I'm not buying it.
My friend might be getting total b.s. from those coaches, but to me, it adds up. Now, i don't see Gruden at ND because I truly see ND getting 10 wins this year will all the veteran talent that CW has assembled (remember '05), but then again we did lose to friggin' Syracuse so anything can happen. Just sayin'...
