Ron Powlus, till he got hurt in preseason and then Notre Dame Legend Kevin McDougal stepped in and saved the day with one of most inspirational single seasons for a QB at ND. And then was screwed out of a national title by finishing 2nd to a team that he beat head to head.

YouTube - Kevin Mcdougal

his first long michigan run made me jump off the chair I was sitting on, yelling, screaming, jumping, till I was out of breath...the thought brings a smile to my face today. he was basically an unknown factor at the time, for him to bust open that run, and to roll up michigan like he did was exhilirating. good times. that run takes place at 1:14 of the clip

was he the starter, or just filling in for injured starter Beuerlein?

Beuerlein had graduated and Terry Andrysiak, a senior, was in his 4th year. He had been the #2 QB behind Beuerlein the past two years and had won the job. He was a passing QB who worked well with Tim Brown. Terry started the first 4 games and broke a collarbone late in the first half against Pitt. A soph named Rice came off the bench in the second half. ND was shut out in the half and Rice rallied the team from a 3 TD deficit to lose by a TD.

As a Prop 48 the year before Rice was NOT allowed to practice. He was required to devote all his time to studies. He was perceived as he QB of the future but when the '87 season opened Andrysiak was clearly the man.

Andrysiak was lost for the season so the next week Holtz largely shelved the passing attack with his new QB and went to a run only offense.

I believe Kevin McDougal is the most underrated ND Quarterback of all time.
He could of been another Tony Rice, who is my favorite QB. In fact Kevin McDougal threw the ball way better, he was a better fit than Ron Powlus for Lou Holtz.

Which Notre Dame receiver held the record for receiving yards as a freshman before Michael Floyd broke that record in 2008?

Tony Hunter

Correct. Hunter had 690 yards in 1979.

And here's a few more!

1. The Notre Dame record for touchdown receptions in a season is 15. Name the three players who are tied for that record AND the years in which they scored that many TDs. (This should be easy, as all were recent)

2. In Notre Dame's history, only six players have recorded over 200 receiving yards in a single game. Name these players.

3. In 1955, this Irish player broke a then-NCAA record for yards per reception in a game with 41.6 per catch. Name him.

Most fans here think of Red Salmon as just processed fish.

107 seasons after he stopped playing he's still among the ND Career Leaders for TDs Scored (he only played in 27 games) and Scoring PPG.

Shark, Rhema, and Golden all under Weis (Shark and Rhema in the first two years and Tate in the last).

Seymour, Snow, Morse (on 5 catches), Tate, Brown (Bobby amazingly not Tim), and MoSto

3. In 1955, this Irish player broke a then-NCAA record for yards per reception in a game with 41.6 per catch. Name him.

Morse, a halfback.

Beurlein's last year. Andrysiak, and Belles come to mind as backups but Belles became a receiver I think. Haven't a clue if there were other scholarship players that played QB in HS.

There was another scholarship QB on campus some kid named Rice but as a Prop 48 he wasn't allowed to practice per NCAA regs. He was a full time student.

What football player holds the ND record for most monograms?

Talking football letters only or all sports?

There are a bunch with 4 year football letterman (the NCAA gives you 5 years to play 4) but I though I read that one of Leahy's guys had 5 (before the NCAA 5 for 4), not sure, don't recall a name either.

As for most ND mulitsport letters that should be Dutch Bergman who played with Rockne. Bergman amassed 13 letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track. With his two brothers they combined for more than 20 ND letters.

Was it George Gipp? I do recall he came to Notre Dame on a baseball scholly.

While people mull over that one...

This legendary NFL wide receiver (who is currently still in the NFL) had his letter of intent signed to Notre Dame, and then got in a fight at high school and got his scholarship rescinded. Name him.

Correct.

Next...

This running back, who gained some notoriety as a starter for the Green Bay Packers in the late '90's and early 2000's, originally played for the Irish, but was unhappy in South Bend and transferred. This d-bag also told Aaron Taylor on his recruiting visit that life at Notre Dame blew. Name him.

Dorsey Levens

Correct.

1. True or false: George Gipp did not play a down of high school football.

2. Shane Walton did not come to Notre Dame on a football scholarship. What was his original reason for coming to Notre Dame?

3. The Top 6 most passing yards in a season: Brady Quinn 3,919 (2005); Jimmy Clausen 3,772 (2009); Brady Quinn 3,426 (2006); Jimmy Clausen 3,172 (2008). Name the final two players that round out the Top 6.

4. _____ Irish players have been drafted into the NFL, the most all-time of any school.

5. Redshirt freshman Ron Powlus wowed the Irish faithful (seeming to be as legitimate as his ridiculous hype claimed him to be) after he threw 4 touchdown passes in the 1994 opener against which team (Powlus's career was a major disappointment, largely because of the option offense that Notre Dame used during his career)?
