As far as housing, I would call for dismantling Fannie and Freddie to solve a lot of the problem where (I suspect) you think Government can get it right if they just get it big enough. I would also provide incentives for banks to be small and make it more expensive to be big. Start with FDIC insurance, the bigger you are the higher I would make your percentage of deposits you pay to support it. Pay a higher fee for having an investment banking operation or any other line of business that is seen detracting from the goal of having banks in the business of lending money or getting too big to fail. That generally means a sliding scale of regulation as you get bigger and enabling more creativity, not less.

I'll paraphrase how I read Irishpat's posts and maybe he can say if that is fair or not.

He employs a lot of hispanics, in fact most of his employees are hispanic, he has a hard time finding hard working employees and takes time to fire bad employees while rewarding good ones in order to retain and motivate them. He is diligent on paperwork to ensure they are all legal and has fired one person in the past for being illegal (did not call INS but just fired the person). Not said but reading between the lines, very few non-hispanics are lining up to work for him or any janitorial company in his area. It is a royal pain in the arse to filter through qualified and unqualified workers, let alone deal with finding and retaining good employees. There are a lot of lazy hispanics that don't cut under his employ, he does not say this is exclusive to hispanics (who is the racist for implying that is the case). He also says he has had employees only speak english on pay day, reinforcing other people's experience and frustration. NOT ALL, SOME.

At the end of the day, he has valuable insight on the front lines of this debate. Those who draw absolutes from these statements are intellectually dishonest. It is as if any evidence supporting frustrations with illegal immigration is struck down as racist.


As for opposing amnesty, GREAT, now what are you FOR. You have valuable personal experience with immigration. How can we make it better? This system is horribly broken, the laws are unenforcable and valuable people who WANT to be Americans (or at least legally in America) are being denied that opportunity, which to me is more criminal than them crossing the border to find work.
