Taking over for my boy NDLA, traditions are traditions.
http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/not...nnual-pre-opening-game-night-chat-thread.html

Copy and pasted from the last one
So 5 years ago, I got to know another IE member, GOIrish!, through this late night thread someone started in anticipation of the season opener. We tossed a few back, and dissected the team, the season, why and how we became fans, and eventually just life in general. And it became a yearly thing. (And now we know each other very well and we've hung out outside of IE a few times, and he'll be my wife and I's first guest in our new SB house when he comes up for the Wake Forest game - and all this out of a random late night chat 5 yrs ago. And no homo LOL).

Unfortunately, this is the 1st year I am 3 hours ahead of GoIrish, so by the time he gets back from dinner with his wife, I'll probably be knocked out after a long week with not enough sleep. But hey, we have to keep tradition going, so I can start it and hopefully everyone else can keep it going!

So, with cold Corona in hand, here's my main talking points:

1. Incredibly excited to watch our new MOBILE qb. It's the type of QB this system needs, and damn, it'll just be fun to watch!!! I fully expect him to make a ton of mistakes, and I'll probably be foolishly calling for Hendrix at some points during the 1st 4 games, but still, this is an exciting time for Irish fans.
2. Gotta enjoy Manti while he's still here...players like him don't come along very often.
3. Can't wait to see the young receivers.
4. On a personal note, you gotta love small town housing prices! My wife and I just bought a house in SB that has 4 times the space (and is much nicer) inside and 4 1/2 times the square footage outside in a fantastic neighborhood as we did in the L.A. area, for a little over half the price. Insane. I would have died for that much space to play as a kid.

Can't wait for the game...GO Irish!!!

I dont know what to make of this season. With TR at the helm I dont know whether to be scared sh!tless or be overjoyed we have someone that knows what the hell BK wants to do with the offense.

Unfortunately we all know TR has his ceiling but can he actually get ND back to prominence?

IM drinking **** beer and I did so last year (drinking **** beer is against my religion)

I gave up my cable. I have severely underestimated what a informational hole that puts one into. Probably gonna resubscribe.

Hurmph me all you want I really miss a FB in the Notre Dame offense. ND has had lots of talented FBs that have passed through her doors and I think its a sad state where ND doesnt have a smack you in the face FB at her disposal.

Thinking about getting into duel sport motorcycle riding. Anyone have an opinion on the Susuki DR650, Kawaski KRL650 or the Honda XR650l?

Tommy Rees........not sure what this season will bring.......I'm not overly optimistic, but I'll give him a chance to not throw into triple coverage in the red zone before I scream for his head on a silver platter.

Expecting BIG things from the Frosh class this year.......not sure why, but u expect big plays from some of them!!!!

Hopefully GAIII finally becomes the runner this team needs him to be!!!

The defense has play makers at every level, let's see some big defensive plays this year........some defensive scores will help a lot here!!!!

OL play.......if they play as well as expected, could be a very big year!!!!!

I've chosen optimism as it relates to Tommy. I really believe he can lead this team to great heights.

Jaylon will be a freshman All-American and a future 1st round pick.

I have more confidence in Tommy than GA3.

I'm hoping Grace is a "gamer". The fact he couldn't beat out Fox or Calabrese is concerning when considering the expectations people had for him heading into Spring practice.

You don't need a full-time FB in today's game. You can take a player from another position and put him there if the situation calls for it. Stick Troy in the backfield and he'll smack you in the face.

.

I agree with you here. I dont think GA3 has what it takes to be a feature back. If TR can play as well as he did against Miami in the Sun Bowl, the season will be all good.

There is no todays game as its constantly changing. This year its spread, the next year its power I, the next year its run and shoot, the year after that who knows the wish bone makes a come back. My point being a thumper back can always be utilized. Nine times out of ten a guy like Carlo becomes a FB and not a weak side ILB.

My two favorite players growing up --- Tom Rathman (I was a 49ers fan) and Marc Edwards. I played the position my first three years of football until my coach decided I was too slow and moved me to Center. I hated him for it but it ended up being a great position switch for me as I went on to play college, something I wouldn't have done as a FB.

I don't disagree a FB can be utilized, and it is sad from a historical perspective that we don't have a traditional FB on scholarship, but the position is on the endangered species list and will soon be extinct. It's just not that difficult to find someone that can play another position and do the job of a FB if needed.

Takes a special person to strap on a helmet and your sole purpose is to knock someones head off each and every play. Some want the glory (TDs) alongside making some dude have snot bubbles.

I am excited to watch the defense again and see what the young guys to do. Also I am hoping the Tommy ends his career at ND on a highnote and has an awesome season. But most of all I am just excited that ND Football is back!

I don't think it's really hit me to be honest. I've almost been in denial all week. I think there are two reasons for that:

1. The off-season was so long. I never thought the season would get here.

2. My son's football game was moved from 9am to 4pm so I'm going to miss the game. I'm going to DVR it and not find out the score. I'll start watching around 6pm. This is going to screw up my viewing schedule of the Alabama game and part of the 8pm games and will not allow me to look at this site until I'm done watching the game. That's very disappointing.

Yes. I think the IE thread police officers (you know who you are) that are constantly on patrol will leave this thread alone.
IE has become to the no fun zone unless you toe the line. Which is unfortunate because differing opinions used to bring spice to this place.

What kind of music do you guys like getting drunk to lol

Like late night sitting down and drinking type music and thinking kind of music

Im listening to the best of the Stones right now. They are absolutely amazing. If someone said if you were trapped on a desert island and you had to listen to the Beatles collection or the Rolling Stones. I would take the Stones in a heart beat.

Sucks that they moved the time but atleast you get to watch your son's game and not working or something. What position does he play?

I'm actually one of the coaches. I coach HS and his 1st grade youth team. He plays center and DL/LB. Unfortunately, he inherited his father's speed and the youth game is all about who can get to the edge first. All the fast kids play RB/DB and the slower kids play the line. He's doing well though. It's fun.
