I was just watching a great (free) video on Rivals posted SoInIrishFan, http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/notre-dame-football/54647-kelly-man.html
In the video one of the commentators talks about how ND fans will give Kelly time to get back to prominence, my question to you is, how long will you wait? 1 year? 3 years? I personally think we can be in the BCS as soon as 2011 and a national player as soon as 2012, but what do you guys think?

on a side note, STOKED for NEXT SATURDAY! (YES ITS THAT CLOSE)

it's hard to say for me. we live in a instant gratification world, but i think i'm a little more patient than that. maybe a couple of years? not sure yet. i think for this season, it's realistic to see us in a bowl game (maybe not bcs, but a bowl game none-the-less).

I'm with you. I think this year we go 7-5 MAYBE 8-4 but next year BCS or bust. 2012 might be a bit early for a National Championship appearance; I was thinking more like 2013 or 2014. Regardless I'm EXCITED but EXTREMELY cautious at the same time.

I'll give him 4 years. By then, the line-up will be largely populated with his recruits.

I expect him to do fine though. So to me, this whole thread is much ado about nothing (I hope!)

I'm with you NDOM. I think that after our past few coaches we should be cautious. Do we have the right guy? Maybe, but none of us know yet. IMO thought I think Kelly will be a much better coach for ND than Weis was.

But to answer the question, I think we should give Kelly 4-5 years.

I'm willing to give Kelly at least "the full five seasons" which seem to be becoming a symbolic "prove it to me" number. The thing that shortens the "five seasons" patience is when the team seems not to improve or actually go in the wrong direction. It also hurts if you don't think that the guy can recruit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I honestly think that I will be OK with Kelly and staff going 7-5 this year, if they look like they're playing good football and not stumbling around like the Keystone Kops. I want to be COMPETITIVE in every game, even if it's too early to ask for huge numbers of wins out of entirely new systems being installed.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Having said that, what i really believe will happen is that we'll not only look good in every game, not fold in the fourth quarters, pull out some wins from the fire, and get a good bowl placement for a nine win team. We'll probably lose the bowl game since bowls love NDs star power so much they regularly get us in a bit over our heads, but who knows how much Leprechaun Magic we'll be generating by then?

I love Kelly and drink the koolaid without fail.. However if things end up like DickRod at UM, year 3 with little sign of improvement, then out he should go. The key is the level of improvement from year to year. Frankly anything over .500 this year is a bonus as I always consider a coaches first year as a wash out. Could we be extremely surprised? Sure we can. On the flip side if Crist isn't as up to date on the offense we could be looking at another long year.

I believe in Kelly 100% only because of his track record. He came up through the ranks. He is a head coach through and through. Weis was pretty good, but the defense sunk him. I believe that Kelly can actually coach beyond the fade route and win like a ninja can kill you, 100 ways in any situation.

We have to have a NC by the end of the 2011 season or else we never will again. Those damn mayans just had to predict 2012....lol

Oh heck I forgot about that. Guess I am using credit card for the rest of the year. :gbanana:

Who the hell am I to say, just a fan, but...I did not like the BD hire, HATED the TW hire, did not like the O'Leary hire, was so so with the Weis hire, kinda optimistic with the Kelly hire. He seems to be busting some ass.

Either way, guess I will wait forever. ND is my only team. I need to go wash the dishes now.

We should know alot about what Kelly can do with talent in the first 2 years.

Honestly I think you'll see good, reliable play this year. I think you'll see a BCs appearance next year. In year 3...maybe a slight decline...really depends on how well Kelly recruits/develops folks to replace the atheletes we lose to the NFL after years 1 and 2.

in my mind, years 4 & 5 define Kelly...his talent...in his scheme...fan base ready for the reclamation to be complete...2014 or 2015 I'm looking for a a national championship.

I'd say give him 2 years, but the record this year doesn't matter as much. By year 3 we should be seeing some solid improvements - 9 win seasons or better. The talent's there; we just need to implement his system.

I'm not exactly sure what this means. Give him 2 years but it will take 3 years to see improvements?

This year doesn't matter? I think it matters a great deal, in fact these first 4 games are HUGE (imo) in determining how the whole damn thing goes. If we win, we are gaining major momentum with a very difficult early schedule. If we lose the press, fans, and most importantly recruits will just assume that not even Brian Kelly can turn this ship around.

This season is the most important that ND has seen in a long long time. I for one think we win 9-10 games, but I am an obsessed homer of a fan to be sure.

Not at all: this year matters a great deal - at least to the team. They're implementing a new offensive philosophy and a new defensive formation, with shifting of personnel around to fill it in. Add to that a new QB with injury concerns and a thin DB situation and there's just too many variables to expect overwhelming success in the first year. If they can lay down the framework, we'll start to see the results in 2011-2.

Additionally, there are a number of games this season that we'd all like to write down as wins, but these opponents will be happy to play spoiler - Purdue, Michigan,Utah...it seems disingenuous to think that we'll win all of them. I'll be quite happy with a 7-5 record as long as Michigan (a big visiting recruit day) and USC fall.

Yep, and then BURN him. Why? I think he's a witch. BURN him!

I believe the gender-correct term would be " ... he's a Warlock." And don't bother with the dishes. Just use your credit card to buy more as needed. 2012 will be here before you know it. If the city cites you as a Nuisance Property due to the growing pile of discarded dinnerware in your yard, put that on a different credit card. Preferably one with a low introductory interest rate.

Should I dredge up an oft heard chant from my days in high school and college on the protest lines? "We want the world and we want it NOW!"

As an aging hippie I've learned the art of patience. Ditto as an Irish fan of late. I say we give Kelly a five year run. Just don't go ape-shit and prematurely extend his contract should his first year be a (possibly false-positive) good one.

If you have us beating Michigan and USC and still only finishing 7-5, then who are the 5 we are losing to? Of those 5, I would say at least three would be teams I am not going to be happy to lose to.

Michigan State? Okay, we have lost to them a lot recently so this might be one of the only loss I will tolerate. Pitt? That will be a tough one to win for sure. Stanford? Harbaugh is building a solid program, but I don't think I would be okay losing to them. BC? F - NO! I won't be okay losing to them in any way, shape, or form. Utah? Past successes for them aside, I am not okay with a team like them coming in to South Bend and winning. That leaves Purdon't, Tulsa **cough**, Western Michigan (not even funny to joke about that one as a loss), Army and Navy.

So why would you be okay with any 5 of those teams beating us? Even considering an upset at SC and beating Meat Chicken in week 2, I will not look at 7-5 as a necessarily "successful" season. I will see it as losing to three or four teams we should have beaten. Once again, I will find myself talking about how close we could have been to a 10 or 11 win season.

Trust me, I am not saying we will win 10 or 11 games. I am merely saying I won't be "happy" only going 7-5.

I will be happy with a bowl win over a mainland university. This BCS/Nationals championship stuff is plain silly. We have had a JOKE of a defense for so long.

Yeah - I suppose my math is suspect. Taking both Michigan and USC would probably leave us in a good spot as far as wins go. I guess it's probably prudent to follow dshans' lead with the 5 year plan.

Losses to Purdue, Michigan, BC, Army, WMU, Tulsa, and Navy are unacceptable.
A loss to MSU would be a knife in my side but typical.
A loss to Utah would be disappointing and not a surprise to the pundits, but not a game we should lose just because of national recognition (or lack there of for the Utes)
A loss to Stanford without Gerhart is puzzling. Any defensive improvement makes us a more talented team NOW.
I think Pitt and U$C are WAY overrated, but those losses are carved into the schedule by most.

Nothing profound here. But 7-5 would not be a great start IMHO. A championship program begins by starting to beat championship competition. If we lose to U$C, Pitt and Stanford this year, the window becomes very narrow before our murderers row of a schedule with Miami, OU, and Texas added to U$C catches up with us. It's title or bust the next 2 years, with BCS bowls being a more realistic goal in 2012 and beyond.

I'll stick with my original 10-2 prediction.
