If it were a running back, sure... but you know any QB is going to make a beeline for the sidelines. It was obvious in watching the play.

It may have been obvious to you watching the play but go back to the photo you posted.

Quinn's NOT beelining for the sideline. He's turned upfield in the hash marks. He's definitely dropped his leading shoulder and turned his body to protect the ball. IF he was beelining for the sideline he would have been out of bounds already. Then perhaps warranting a late hit penalty. But no so with his footwork.

Without the shoulder drop and turn the tackle is made chest high with legs driving. The tackler's head is positioned on the front side of Quinn's chest if Quinn doesn't drop his shoulder.

A helmet hit is a penalty regardless of intent and you're only guessing at that. Your photo doesn't support the scenario you set.

If Crum had made the same tackle on Reggie Ball, we'd be screaming the helmet was incidental. But it'd still be a penalty.

Advantage KMac!

Nah, it was pretty clearly intentional.

And Kmac, I agree there was arguably a clip on the play, but I think it was a make-up call. I don't know if that gets called if not for the earlier controversial call.

You've never been a referee or umpire in an organized sport, have you?

Oh sorry I didn't know that we now had to be referees to discuss refereeing.

Hey, no discussing coaching unless you've been a head coach. No discussing kicking unless you've kicked.

Nice jump to the wrong conclusion, waldo.

The point is that umpire and referees are taught even at the Little League level that if you make a bad call, you don't even out the calls later. If you make a bad call it stands and you move on. Otherwise the players in any sport don't recognize the boundaries. You call clips or you don't call them. You call charges or you don't call them. You call a high strike all the time or none of the time. You call a tight game or you let them play.

Umpires and referees are taught to be consistent in softball, baseball, football, whatever. Refs from different conferences may interpert a rule differently than another conferences refs just as the American League and National League have different strike zones although the rule book only describes one strike zone.

If you had ever served in that capacity in organized ball you'd know that.

Thanks but I didn't mean to start an arguement here I just wanted to point out that we don't know what his intention was when he hit Quinn....was it a helmet to helmet blow-yes, was it intentional-we don't know and never will. It was called a penalty and that is the end of it. I thought the officiating was bad going both ways but it was the first game of the season so you expect that. Anyway I just wanted to say that and get that out there.
