I know the ND ladies aren't supposed to be the best looking in the world........but, damn couldn't he have found a paper sack or something. I had high hopes for him, but I am glad that the university suspended him immediately. That is embarassing.

sorry but i must disagree. there is a reason this behavior is a misdemeanor and other behaviors, such as rape, murder, unlawful discharge of firearms, felony assault or steroid possession, are felonies. while this may be unsavory and definitely goes against the moral principles of the university, it should not be equated on a seriousness scale with those other crimes. should this young man have consequences for his actions? certainly, which we all saw began with his indefinite suspension. should he be given a second chance? that is up to coach weis and the university, as well as his ability to grow from this lapse in judgment. i hope that after whatever time period the staff and university deem appropriate that this young man can return to leave all with a better impression of who he is and what he is made of.

Oh well, it's not worth arguing about. I'm sure he won't be given a second chance by ND - he'll almost certainly be kicked out of school.

On another note, though, I must admit that even with this weighing me down, to go to the ESPN.com college football home page and see the following four headlines in their ticker (no mention of Hand, btw) made me feel okay about the quality of the men we have on our team:

  • Colorado suspends three players after alleged fight in June
  • Suspended Gator gets probation in gun incident
  • Troubled quarterback Perrilloux reinstated by Tigers
  • Texas freshman DT arrested, charged on birthday
Yikes. Well, goodnight everyone. It's movie time in our house.

Let hope this all turns out for the best. I'm hoping that he was just with the wrong people and didn't have any action in this matter. Just in the wrong place with the wrong company at the wrong time.

Is this worse than McAlarney getting busted for weed? He was given a second chance. I am certainly not the moral police, but trolling for @$$ just doesn't seem like school-ending screw up for me. Now he should not win any Humanitarian of the Year awards, but if she had some handcuffs and was twirling a baton...um...I heard some guys dig that.

Yeah--since I believe prostitution should probably be legalized, I don't see the action by itself as all that serious. However, it still demonstrates a certain lack of judgement since it could be (and appears that it may be) detrimental to his and the teams immediate future. However, as far as this being a black eye on the program or school--is it? It may be unsavory to some people's moral sentiments, but it's not like he raped or killed someone, or was cheating in the classroom or in the weightroom. I hope this all works out for Hand. Best wishes, sir, whether at ND or elsewhere!

It's sad that this got more attention from espn than the four minnesota football players who filmed themselves rape and gang-bang a drunken female.

Is he suspended from school too, or just football?

my immediate guess is that since school is not in session yet, they have not yet decided. if i recall correctly, mcalarney was arrested over break, and he wasn't officially suspended by the school until later because res life didn't meet with him or something. but i'm not really sure.

I just checked ESPN college page and not one mention. Texas, Florida and LSU all with blurbs about suspended players. This ESPN stuff gets really old after a while.

Lets face it the kid committed a crime and now he has to do the time. At least CW didn't suspend him for summer practice and then make him clean the stadium at the end of the game.

Hand To Enter Pre-Trial Diversion

Notre Dame junior nose tackle Derrell Hand will enter a pre-trial diversion program, St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Catherine Wilson said Monday.

The 20-year-old Hand was arrested on Aug. 2 and charged with soliciting a prostitute in South Bend. The next day, Hand was suspended indefinitely from the football team.

However, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis hasn't ruled out Hand's return to the team at some point.

"We're all on the same page with this one and I think he and his mom were very appreciative of the fact that I said 'Let's wait and see how it all turns out,'" Weis said. "But the flip side of that is that just like if it was your kid, there are some circumstances that it is more important you clear up the circumstances than you play football."

Hand was scheduled to appear and be arraigned Thursday in St. Joseph County misdemeanor court, but the pre-trial diversion agreement alleviates that.

E-mails sent to Hand's Notre Dame account were not returned.

This is the second time this year that a Notre Dame athlete has been arrested and accepted into the pre-trial diversion program.

In January, Notre Dame point guard Kyle McAlarney entered the program after a Dec. 29, 2006 arrest for marijuana possession.

This is the second time in Weis' three seasons one of his players has been arrested. In 2005, fullback Rashon Powers-Neal was arrested in Minnesota for a DUI. He was suspended by Notre Dame for the semester.

ND football player signs agreement with prosecutor

Tribune Staff Report

SOUTH BEND — Derrell Hand, a University of Notre Dame defensive end/nose tackle, signed a pre-trial diversion agreement with the St. Joseph County prosecutor that was filed in court this morning after Hand was charged with patronizing a prostitute, a Class A misdemeanor.

Hand, a 20-year-old junior from Philadelphia, was expected to compete for a starting spot or to be a key reserve at defensive end, even though he had not seen action during his first two seasons at ND. He was suspended indefinitely from the team Aug. 3.

Hand agreed to pay $20 to an undercover police officer for a sex act, according to the charges.

The agreement means the charges against Hand will be dropped after a year if he keeps a clean criminal record. He must also pay $316 in a user’s fee and court costs, and undergo a test for HIV/AIDS.

Any news on if he will be able to return to ND?

That decision is going to come from Res Life, so it'll have to wait until the start of the semester. My money says he's finished - I feel bad for him, but Du Lac is Du Lac.

John, do you see something like the K-Mac situation playing out, or do you feel that his time at ND is definitely done? I mean, do you think he will be kicked out of school, but have the chance to return after a semester if he does what's asked of him, or, if he's kicked out, he's kicked out for good?

I dunno. I guess I think that what he did was clearly worse than K-Mac's violation, and so the penalty will probably be stricter; I'd be surprised if he's allowed back at all. But I don't have lots of insight into how ResLife works (though I was once on the receiving end of one of their penalties ... hehe), so don't trust my speculation too much.

Irish's Weis says case of Hand is nearing end

Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis said the case of defensive lineman Derrell Hand, who was arrested last month on a misdemeanor charge of propositioning a prostitute, was nearing a resolution.

Hand, a former West Catholic star, was suspended indefinitely from the team. Weis had said Hand would have to let his case go through the judicial and university systems before Weis could take any action. Hand entered into a pretrial diversion program on Thursday and is scheduled to learn his fate from the school in the next couple of days, Weis said.

From the FW Journal-Gazette:

Decision on Hand

Junior defensive lineman Derrell Hand, who has been suspended indefinitely since the day after his arrest for soliciting a prostitute, will receive news about his future Monday from Notre Dame.

Hand signed a pre-trial diversion agreement last week to take care of his legal issues, but still needs to wait for discipline from the university.

“We’ve been texting back and forth, but he’s going to have some results on Monday,” Weis said. “One way or the other, we’re going to have results on Monday and I’ll act accordingly.

Presumably those "results" are the decision of ResLife on the sort of punishment he'll receive.

So I guess today's the day. I actually saw him on campus today, but I have no clue what the ruling is yet.

um, i don't know him, and i thought that would have been pretty rude, especially if it was bad news for him. i'm sure we'll all find out soon enough, even though of course i'm curious.

I know I was just busting your balls. You would need to find someone super socially retarded to go up and do that I would think. I'm sure he isn't the smallest man.

for what it's worth (and i'm not being a stalker here, i swear), he was in the dhall today at bfast and appeared to be on his way to class. so if the hearing was in fact yesterday, i think that might indicate at least something.

I have to say I'm REALLY surprised at this, especially given how hard they came down on K-Mac. Really, really surprised.

Weis suspends Hand for three games

Associated Press

Updated: August 28, 2007, 3:19 PM ET

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame defensive lineman Derrell Hand, arrested last month on a misdemeanor charge of propositioning a prostitute, will be allowed to play for the Fighting Irish after serving a three-game suspension imposed by coach Charlie Weis.

Hand appeared before the school's disciplinary committee on Monday, was reinstated to the team and began practicing that day, Weis said Tuesday.

Hand entered into a pretrial diversion program on Aug. 16 that would allow him to have the charge against him dismissed in a year if he meets certain requirements, like staying out of trouble, undergoing testing for HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases and paying $316 in court costs.

Hand had not played for the Irish in his first two seasons but was expected to contribute this year. He was arrested during a prostitution sting by South Bend police on Aug. 2, four days before the start of practice. He was suspended from the team indefinitely the next day.
