MATT TALKS ABOUT THE RECENT IRISH COMMITMENT OF SAFETY LEONARD GORDON
The Notre Dame football team must regroup this week after a heart wrenching loss to the Michigan State Spartans, but received good news just 45 minutes after the game. Safety Leonard Gordon(pictured far right, reminiscent of Patriot All-Pro Rodney Harrison), out of Fort Campbell High School in Kentucky, gave his verbal commitment to wear the Blue and Gold next year.
Gordon(6' 1", 200 lbs) may not be the most heavily recruited prospect like fellow safeties Taylor Mays or Myron Rolle, but he brings a fierce style of play, in other words NASTY, plus great instincts to the field.
Here is word by word what ESPN recruiting insider Craig Haubert had to say about Leonard Gordon:
"Notre Dame suffered their first loss of the 2005 season this past weekend, but leave it up to coach Weis to find a way to gain a victory in the recruiting wars. Although Gordon is not an elite player in the 2006 class, he is a nice addition for the Fighting Irish defense. He is a play maker whose physical style makes him productive versus the run and the pass. He has a great motor and can give the defense some options as he can handle man-to-man situations and can also be a dangerous predator roaming the middle. Gordon now brings Notre Dame's early 2006 class to 15 commitments, and this is the school's second verbal in the secondary."
He is rated as a 6.7 on the ESPN recruiting scale and the 29th rated safety in the nation. Here is ESPN's evaluation of Gordon:
"Evaluation: Gordon really grows on you the more you watch him. He is equally effective playing both run and pass and you love his physical style of play. He's not the biggest or the fastest player, but he is a play maker and is always around the football. Plays with a great motor, really flies around and you like his passion. He plays with a mean streak and he is physical at the point of attack. He uses his hands well, he is capable of getting through traffic quickly and he has the range to make plays from sideline-to-sideline. Gordon stays active, he takes excellent angles to the ball and he is fast enough to chase backs down from behind. He has the athletic ability to make plays in space, he will break down in then open field and he generally does a nice job of wrapping the ball carrier up upon contact. Has very good feet and adequate change of direction skills. He will occasionally deliver a big blow and can separate the receiver from the ball. He is fast enough to run with most receivers downfield and he has the change of direction skills to be effective in man coverage. He is at his best playing the high point as a free safety where he can roam, key the QB and make plays in front of him. However, his aggressive nature could prompt a move to strong safety. Could also contribute as a nickel linebacker playing near the box."
The Irish had as much as 9 recruits who they have been wooing at the Michigan State game, not including the handful of commitments that already were there to watch the overtime thriller. They got to witness first hand a great game that unfortunately did not go the Irish way. But what they saw was truly magical, an Irish comeback from 21 points down to taking the lead in overtime.
With freshmen such as WR David Grimes and FB Asaph Schwapp playing significant time so far this season, it should be enticing to recruits to know that they have a chance to get on the field immediately.
Notre Dame will now play the waiting game with other recruits till the next big recruiting weekend of October 15th for the USC game. Till then, welcome aboard Leonard Gordon, prepare yourself to create havoc on offenses around the country while leading the ND DyNASTY of the future.
Check back for more recruiting updates concerning the Irish.
