MATT TALKS ABOUT THE RECENT IRISH COMMITMENT OF SAFETY LEONARD GORDON

The Notre Dame football team must regroup this week after a heart wrenching loss to the Michigan State Spartans, but received good news just 45 minutes after the game. Safety Leonard Gordon(pictured far right, reminiscent of Patriot All-Pro Rodney Harrison), out of Fort Campbell High School in Kentucky, gave his verbal commitment to wear the Blue and Gold next year.

Gordon(6' 1", 200 lbs) may not be the most heavily recruited prospect like fellow safeties Taylor Mays or Myron Rolle, but he brings a fierce style of play, in other words NASTY, plus great instincts to the field.

Here is word by word what ESPN recruiting insider Craig Haubert had to say about Leonard Gordon:

"Notre Dame suffered their first loss of the 2005 season this past weekend, but leave it up to coach Weis to find a way to gain a victory in the recruiting wars. Although Gordon is not an elite player in the 2006 class, he is a nice addition for the Fighting Irish defense. He is a play maker whose physical style makes him productive versus the run and the pass. He has a great motor and can give the defense some options as he can handle man-to-man situations and can also be a dangerous predator roaming the middle. Gordon now brings Notre Dame's early 2006 class to 15 commitments, and this is the school's second verbal in the secondary."

He is rated as a 6.7 on the ESPN recruiting scale and the 29th rated safety in the nation. Here is ESPN's evaluation of Gordon:

"Evaluation: Gordon really grows on you the more you watch him. He is equally effective playing both run and pass and you love his physical style of play. He's not the biggest or the fastest player, but he is a play maker and is always around the football. Plays with a great motor, really flies around and you like his passion. He plays with a mean streak and he is physical at the point of attack. He uses his hands well, he is capable of getting through traffic quickly and he has the range to make plays from sideline-to-sideline. Gordon stays active, he takes excellent angles to the ball and he is fast enough to chase backs down from behind. He has the athletic ability to make plays in space, he will break down in then open field and he generally does a nice job of wrapping the ball carrier up upon contact. Has very good feet and adequate change of direction skills. He will occasionally deliver a big blow and can separate the receiver from the ball. He is fast enough to run with most receivers downfield and he has the change of direction skills to be effective in man coverage. He is at his best playing the high point as a free safety where he can roam, key the QB and make plays in front of him. However, his aggressive nature could prompt a move to strong safety. Could also contribute as a nickel linebacker playing near the box."

The Irish had as much as 9 recruits who they have been wooing at the Michigan State game, not including the handful of commitments that already were there to watch the overtime thriller. They got to witness first hand a great game that unfortunately did not go the Irish way. But what they saw was truly magical, an Irish comeback from 21 points down to taking the lead in overtime.

With freshmen such as WR David Grimes and FB Asaph Schwapp playing significant time so far this season, it should be enticing to recruits to know that they have a chance to get on the field immediately.

Notre Dame will now play the waiting game with other recruits till the next big recruiting weekend of October 15th for the USC game. Till then, welcome aboard Leonard Gordon, prepare yourself to create havoc on offenses around the country while leading the ND DyNASTY of the future.

So based on this article are we to throw the 4.75 40 out the window??? The article twice talked about his speed.

What do you guys think?

40 times are overrated, this guy can develop. Gordon and Gaines are nice additions to the secondary

I agree, 40 times are way overrated. Coming out of college they said Jerry Rice would never be an elite reciever b/c his 40 was too slow, and look what happened? There's speed, and then there's football speed. Sounds like the kid has that. Besides, the Irish are pretty deep at safety anyway w/ Bruton and Herring behind Tommy Z and the Duke (not to mention Washington can play safety as well), so its not like giving this kid a chance could hurt. Its corner they really need help at...

They're overrated, but a useful tool to determine a player's ability.

It's football, not track. The 40 time is one aspect of the football skills the player has. I use base running as a parallel. I had average speed, but got good jumps and ran smart. Our centerfielder was a blazer and was one of the worst baserunners I've ever seen.

DBs need good cover skills and MUST tackle upon the catch. WRs should be good route runners, have good hands and decent leaping ability. Without those things, a 4.3 40 yard dash is pretty useless.

What does he have to develop? According to the physical stats given him by that writer, 6-1 200, he's already grown 2 -1/2 inches and added a dozen or more pounds since spring. At this rate by August he'll probably be 6-3, 220 and run a 4.4 forty, not that speed is important. Maybe as he continues to grow by leaps and bounds, his 4.75 which was recorded at 5-10.5 and 185 will grow with him, to say a 4.85 or 4.9. I've always had a fondness for safeties that run with the speed of Ron Powlus and 250 pound TEs.

You guys got me thinking about all those 4.8 and 4.9 wide receivers we've been ignoring. All those potential Jerry Rice's, Steve Larget's, and Howard Twilley's out there and we've been wasting our time looking for guys like Moss or Shelton.

Maybe we'll get really lucky and find some 5.9 or 6.0 linemen just as long as they're nasty and hit like anvils. Everybody knows OLs don't have to run 40 yards anyway so speed's not important, is it?

see you just mentioned him developing, He is in highschool, all I was saying is that a 4.75 40 is nothing and that Weis' crew will mold him into whatever position he accels at the most.

I also read that he was more along the lines of 5'10-5'11 but I hope your right

Speed camp, boys.

Trainers all over the country make thousands off of parents/players/schools to improve skills.

Mendoza will take these guys and turn them into carved wood. Demetrius Jones, Bartley Webb...it is scary to think what they'll be like in a few years after he's done with them.

Everything I read up to that sportscrack "article" listed him 5'-10 to 5'11. That was part of what prompted my response. His articles are displaying a penchant for hyperbole.

Irish gain a recruit after Saturday loss

Notre Dame offered the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Gordon in late summer, but it wasn't until Gordon's weekend unofficial visit that Notre Dame vaulted past the likes of LSU, Penn State, Louisville, Kentucky, West Virginia, Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Duke.

"I didn't have it in my mind that I had to commit (over the weekend)," Gordon said Sunday afternoon. "Everything about it seemed right to me."

...

Gordon, who expects to make an official visit during the season, perhaps for the Oct. 15 USC game, will likely play safety at Notre Dame, although he's been told he could also see some time at corner.

Some time at corner??

I do feel more comfortable knowing that the ex-mailman said, "I think it's a good catch."

Lemming, FWIW, rates Gordon a 4 star player out of 5 and Gaines a 3 star.
