BlueandGold.com // The Diamond In the Rough

by Todd Burlage 7/12

Burlage notes most of the production will come from Clausen, Tate, and Floyd on offense and Brian Smith and Kyle McCarthy on defense. Who else will step up to join them on '09?

He sees Armando Allen adding 40 yds/game to his Total Offense number of 119 yds/game to take him from #56 on the NCAA T.O. list to inside the Top 10.

He believes Trevor Robinson could push a OLine starter out of a job.

On defense he sees Sergio Brown and Darius Fleming both emerging but he doesn't say who they're going to beat out.

I expect every position to be better simply because they will be a year older and have more experience. The real question will be how much better.

I expect the experience to show also but the thrust of this article was who are the guys with less experience that can put a more experienced starter on the bench.

I expect big changes in our defensive production. With Tenuta calling the plays again and back to his 4-3 base defense that is his foundation, I expect QB's to deficate in their pants.

Isn't Flemiing the projected starter right now?

I think Ethan Johnson and Kapron Lewis-Moore will be the surprises this year on D. I cant wait to see these guys get on the field Sept 5!!

I thought there might be some kind of DNA hybrid cloning going on with the defense. LMFAO

think about it, we could have a Harrison McCarthy and a Robert Slaughter or a Manti Filer?

I expect the experience to show.......

We should see this in the first game; experience should show by ND doing what they are supposed to do, which is beat Nevada handily. No close game like SDSU; ND will be judged not by if they beat Nevada, but by how they look doing so.

....but the thrust of this article was who are the guys with less experience that can put a more experienced starter on the bench.

This is a good problem to have(influx of young talent)...Good leadership can make dilemmas like this a non-issue. The idea of offering a starting spot as a recruiting tool is less likely as better players come aboard. What has to change now is the team needs to start winning regularly, and make it a destination that national recruits want to go to.

I've heard around the bend that we'll have a quick defense and it will surprise people.

Quick is good!

Will we stop the run?

Exactly. The D Line worries me the most on this team. Lots of talent and potential but we need some guys to grow up quick.
Ethan Johnson is the real deal but where will he play at.
Ian Williams is a nice solid player but he is not a game changer.
KLM is all potential right now.
Ditto for Hafis Williams
Kerry Neal has yet tob sustain any real productivity.

These guys can be good but we need them to be good now

Kerry Neal is a better linebacker, in my opinion.
