Embarrassing living in NJ and seeing how Sherrill is approaching the entire thing. Pointing the finger at FIFA for an agreement Phil Murphy signed. They also are banning parking at MetLife for seemingly no reason, conflating the issue with public transit.

Separately, there’s barely any advertising up here for the World Cup. It’s being treated like a big concert rather than the world’s biggest event. Just an embarrassment all around.

did you seriously expect anything better from all the clowns involved from FIFA on down?
it simply is not as important here and that is why, bluntly speaking, the World Cup should not be held in the US. It is like holding our Super Bowl in say England. Or France

I think NYC metro in general is in retrospect an awful spot for it bc there is just too much going on here on a day to day basis for people / local governments to properly care about what is effectively a tournament for the country’s 5th biggest sport.

I think another top 10 city would have prioritized it properly. I know in Philly they are doing a great job advertising the game / doing the fan events properly. Even DC or Boston would have done a better job as host.

Boston is a host, Foxboro(ugh) is the venue. They have had their own issues.

I still cant believe Chicago was not made a host city
Chicago withdrew its bid in 2018 because of the demands from FIFA.

Chicago made the right choice.

And yeah Boston - or more accurately Foxborough, which almost denied municipal permitting until the Krafts agreed to pay for police overtime - is a host city as well. Can't wait for the surprise for the surprise of the French and British and Norwegians and others who arrive here only to find the game they spend $700 (minimum) apiece to attend is actually 25 miles away in a small town that's barely accessible by public transit. No one really knows what the Fan Fest will entail. It's gonna be awesome.

Chicago hosting the World Cup Final with the most incompetent Big City mayor in the country would have been a recipe for disaster too.

Realistically you needed a pro business mayor which is increasingly rare it seems, Nashville would have done a great job tbh.
what would be the over and under of gang shootings if the World Cup was there?

Wreck it Rahm was mayor at that time. FIFA could not specify on costs and it would have likely come down to tax payers getting the bill. He said no thank you, actually a good decision.

FIFA was demanding ridiculous tax exemptions, major infrastructure overhauls and liability waivers among other things. To some, this is not "business friendly", but ultimately now looking at this from 2026 present day this was the right move then as it certainly is now.

FIFA may want to consider Hammond, Indiana down the line.

Shit show.

Should have put it in cities with successful MLS teams that have good attendance.
Why? The one thing that World Cup organizers don't seem to have any trouble with is selling tickets. Even at these crazy prices.

This isn't about a lack of fan support, it's about FIFA's greed and people in some of these cities (rightly, IMO) wondering why taxpayers should be on the hook for so much of the cost of hosting these games.

I really do think the splitting between 3 countries was really unnecessary...just stick with 1 country if possible...for crying out loud Qatar hosted all of the games...lol

Wait until 2030.

The opening matches will be in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Then it will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco from there. Three continents.

And get really excited for 2034 in Saudi Arabia.
