ND only ran for 3.5 ypa against Marshall, USC, Cal. That’s atrocious.

They also ran for over 220 yards in seven games. Completely atrocious.

Nearly two 1,000 yard rushers, too. And the third dude close to 500.

MFMF: B+. Love the general direction of the program, energy and attitude. Appreciate his effort in recruiting. Just can't give A though with losses to Stanford and Marshall this year.

Mason: A.

Golden: B. Seems to be very successful in general in terms of in game adjustments. Would like to hear about him improving or becoming more involved in recruiting.

Rees: B+. Like the creativity in his play-calling but seems to have a couple important bad calls per game with unsteady QB recruiting previously (but seems to be improving).

Mickens: A+. Took a large weakness and has turned it into a strength.

HH: B+. Resume speaks for itself. Only concern I have is tackle recruiting numbers going forward if Absher doesn't pan out at tackle.

McCullough: A. Strong on field production and recruiting.

Parker: B+. Will be interesting to see TE development going forward now that Mayer is gone.

O'Leary: C. Some recruiting concerns for me but the Bowen situation was not really on him it seems.

Stuckey: A. Fantastic recruiting and continued improvement seen this year with current players.

Washington C-. Concern with DE recruiting in 23 and 24 classes.

If I’m grading, I’m looking wholly at the season from OSU to yesterday. I give the overall staff a B. Freeman has grown a shitload since last year at this time.

A: Mason, Mickens, Deland

C: Washington, O’Leary

Everyone else in the B range.

This seems fair.
Also it's hard to weigh off-season things like recruiting against in-season things like development/performance in the 13 games. Stuckey's a dog on the trail but on-field play by WRs - Jayden Thomas aside - didn't really live up to potential. For instance. And then how much of that is on the QB. And how much of THAT is on recruiting decisions three or four years ago by Rees but also Long and Kelly.

But yeah the five guys you mention were notably better, or worse, than the others. In terms of on-field results.

I agree—Stuckey I almost gave an “incomplete” but decided a B was appropriate because of Colzie’s growth by the end of the year and the flashes from Tobias.

Parker is another one I almost didn’t grade because with Mayer it’s like having 100 extra credit points.

I suspect the loss to Marshall and Stanford keeps MF up at night. He seemed like a guy that craves perfection. Ultimately the proof will be next years Stanford and Marshall

Everyone is giving Mason an A. Don’t get me wrong he was good and the pint team was really good. Our FG unit was good and our kick off team wasn’t bad. But we still weren’t good on returns. That should factor in his grade.I would say he is clearly a but and maybe even a B+ but that’s as high as I would go.

Freeman - B

Rees - B+

Golden - C

Mason - A

HH - C-

McC - B+

Please no comments or questions
I do believe Rees is in the B level, so B+ is fair. For the most part Rees calls a good game. In the first few games nothing was clicking. The O line was horrible.

I feel Rees called a good game overall. 2 of the pics were when Buckner was hit or the ball was deflected. Can’t blame those on the OC.

The 100 yard pick 6 is on Rees. Why are you passing there. Buckner also should never have thrown that. He did not see that defender unfortunately. That last drive was magical.

I think the game was a B+. Would have been higher without the last INT.

I don’t understand a C- for McCullough. Running backs performed very well this season. I thought he should have gotten one of the highest grades.

The growth from Freeman this year can be seen in the Marshall and Stanford games.

In the Marshall game he seemed lost. Like he was dazed and confused at what was happening. As if it were a dream.

Stanford you could see there was blood in his eyes afterwards. Like he knew what was wrong and was going to do something about it. And we really started to improve after that game in preparation and execution. We paid his tuition this year to HC School, I hope we don’t have to next year.

Marcus- B-
Offensive side of the ball- C-: too inconsistent on the side of the ball, I want to see how they do next season when they have to take the class all over again.
Defensive side of the ball- B: people on here seem to be more critical of the defense. We lose some key players, but I am ready for the young guys to take over and I want to see more turnovers.
Special teams- A+: no explanation needed.

I am glad Marcus had some growing pains this year and I hope it makes this team better.

I doubt we will.

MF has some growing to do as an in-game coach, though as you said the improvement over the course of this season was notable. But, to me, the fact that this team didn’t pack it in after Marshall, or after Stanford, or after USC, or after getting down early against South Carolina in a “meaningless” bowl game where most of its captains and senior leaders didn’t even play, speaks volumes about his leadership skills.

That’s far more important than tactics and playcalls, and gets him at least a B+ in my book.

The fact that the team, players and coaches, didn’t quit on him is huge. He grew in confidence as the season wore on. Adjustments on the fly are hard for any coach but the team’s halftime adjustments played a big role in the success of the team. Second half adjustments are usually a sign of good coaching or bad coaching. You could also see a lot of growth in a lot of younger players which bodes well for the future.

All the while with Drew Pyne as his QB and the recruiting/NIL drama of Keely, Bowen, and Moore.
