CNN & Politico prob cried over having to share this.

Yeah because he backed off the insane ones in a matter of days. They were supposed to take effect April 9th and got paused for 90 days. Then he recently walked back the 145% tariff on China. You all realize that the stuff people were saying "this will be a disaster if implemented" are not currently in effect, right? The market has also completely rebounded on the clear signs he's not following through on the crazy stuff.

Y’all realize people have called out Trumps crazy man strategy as the plan here? Let Bessent be the voice of reason trying to avoid the man willing to go crazy if they don’t make a deal?

Sorry for the bad news.

The easy read on this is as follows, from Fox Business:

Same guy who was first in reporting on the China truce. Has been completely even handed and correct on literally everything that has happened, as much as that offends some MAGA for not being "loyal."

Anyone doing mental gymnastics on what happened here besides what would be the Occam's Razor I promise you I can find contradictions in their statements. People try to have it both ways rather than taking the simple explanation that Lutnick and Navarro are dangerous quacks, Bessent won, and Trump moderated/backed down from a suicidal tariff position.

Your underlying assumption of "he is an idiot who doesn't understand anything" may be slightly flawed. Maybe 145% tariffs were never expected to be implemented but the threat of them had to be credible? We are probably somewhere in between "4D chess" and "idiots destroying everything" being touted - I think "crazy like a fox" is more likely than not with most rhetoric being theatrics.

You are correct that tariffs are a dangerous game and correctly called out Trump going down this road. I grossly underestimated how aggressively he would speed down this road. That doesn't mean positive outcomes are impossible just because we don't like the methods.

Amazingly all those economists are suddenly one handed predicting tariffs propel inflation to the stratosphere and end up being wrong so far.

I certainly see how it can come off that way, and I can probably tone down the rhetoric and be less sensational. Bottom line is that what everyone wants is the "best" trade deals. What he did first term with USMCA was great. I also like deals like the CHIPS act as an example of a policy that actually does bring important manufacturing here. What I want to avoid is charlatans like Navarro and Lutnick lying to people about how tariffs work / what they will result in... because that's how you end up with buffoonery. There are absolutely good ways to use tariffs, which is why Biden kept so many of Trump's 1st term tariffs. And there are bad ways to use them that turn you into Argentina.

Welcome to the world of politics - people telling people what they want to hear and lying to influence popular opinion. I don't know if those guys are full of shit or not but I do know 95% of DC are economically illiterate grifters.

Are there examples of bad tariffs used in Trump's first term? If not, why are we so adamant he got retarded in the last four years?

He's always been retarded. This isn't a "last four years" deal.

In his first admin he had "guard rail" types around him. This time he doesn't. Pretty simple/clear.

That’s why I said wait and see when he announced the tariffs. Trumps go to is to always go to the extreme then walk it back when he gets closer to what he wanted. Did I see that China’s tariffs on U.S. imports was lowered and we raised tariffs on Chinese imports by 10%?
